The Mathematical Foundations of Cognitive Science (인지과학의 수학적 기틀)

  • Anyone wishing to understand cognitive science, a converging science, need to become familiar with three major mathematical landmarks: Turing machines, Neural networks, and $G\ddot{o}del's$ incompleteness theorems. The present paper aims to explore the mathematical foundations of cognitive science, focusing especially on these historical landmarks. We begin by considering cognitive science as a metamathematics. The following parts addresses two mathematical models for cognitive systems; Turing machines as the computer system and Neural networks as the brain system. The last part investigates $G\ddot{o}del's$ achievements in cognitive science and its implications for the future of cognitive science.

Puzzles of Propositional Attitudes:Zalta's Eclectic Solution (명제 태도의 퍼즐들:Zalta 의 타협안)

  • According to the Fregean theory of meaning based on the distinction between sense and reference,the cognitive significance of coreferential names may be distinct or The so-called direct reference theorists. however,claim that unamhbiguous,coreferential names.which have the same denotation from context to context, must have the same cognitive significance.Thereby,Fregean senses,counted as intermediate entities that determine the denotation of a term,are altogether rejected.Once Fregean senses are rejected.however,it is hard to explain why the substitytivity of coreferential names fails in the contexts of propositional attitudes.Thus,the puzzles of propositional attitudes have been the stumbling block for direct reference theorists. Recently, Zalta claimed that by small amendation it is possible to reconcile the conflicting views of Fregeans and the direct reference theorists without losing their important insights.Indeed, he claimed that his suggestion admirably solves the propositional puzzles.In this article,we shall critically examine his eclectic solution only to highlight some of the more basic issues.

  • "모든 사람은 죽는다"라는 믿음을 내용으로 하는 마음의 상태가 "그 사람도 죽는다"라는 믿음을 내용으로 하는 마음의 상태를 인과적으로 야기하는가? 두 믿음 사이의 미시적 얼개가 인과 관계를 골자로 하고 있다는 사실에서 그 미시적 얼개에 수반하는 거시적 얼개도 인과 관계라는 사실이 함축되는가? 거시적 얼개를 물리적 관점에서 보자면 두 믿음 사이의 관계는 인과적이다. 그러나 거시적 얼개의 포인트는 미시적 얼개와는 달리 물리적 인과성에만 맞춰져 있지 않다. 한 믿음에서 다른 믿음으로의 이행에서 그 포인트는 믿음의 신경생리학적 토대가 아니라 믿음의 의미에 있다. 따라서 양자 사이의 이행 관계는 추론이나 바램 등과 같은 인간의 해석적 의미 연관의 관점에서 서술되는 것이 더 자연스럽고 이치에 맞는다.

EDISON_CHEM 솔버 기반 Multiscale Simulation의 가능성 제시 : 메탄의 Coarse-grained Force Field 구축과 열역학적 물성 연구

  • Multiscale Simulation은 sub-nano scale의 전자 구조에서부터 macro scale의 multibody system에 이르기까지 다양한 시간/공간 스케일을 관통하는 시뮬레이션 기법이다. 즉, 전자수준에서의 변화로 인한 분자 전체의 구조 변화와 그에 따른 기능의 변화를 알 수 있는 simulation 방법으로 다양한 스케일에서 분자의 정보를 얻을 수 있다는 점에서 최근 중요하게 여겨지는 시뮬레이션 방법 중 하나이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 몇 가지의 EDISON_CHEM 솔버들을 조합하여 Multiscale Simulation의 가능성을 제시하고자 한다. 또한, 세부적으로 양자계산 시에 어떤 이론을 선택하여 계산하면 더 정확한지, basis set 선택 시 발생하는 basis set superposition error(BSSE)로 인한 분자 수준의 물성의 오차는 어느정도 인지 알아보고자 했다. 본 연구에서는 비교적 간단하지만 온실 가스이자 에너지원으로 각광받고 있는 메탄을 대상으로 하였다. 다양한 시공간 스케일을 다루는 에디슨 솔버들 중에 양자 수준의 계산을 할 수 있는 솔버로는 "GAMESS"를 이용했고, 이 결과를 통해 분자 수준의 물성을 알아보기 위한 솔버로는 "사용자 지정 역장을 사용한 일반 분자동력학(general_MD)"과 "두가지 서로 다른 종류의 LJ입자에 대한 분자동력 시뮬레이션 프로그램(sejong_lj))"을 이용했다. 메탄의 상 전이 과정에 대한 연구 결과 Hartree fock (HF) self-consistent theory를 통해 얻은 force field 보다는 Second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory로 얻은 force field가 더 정확한 상 전이 온도를 예측한다는 것을 메탄의 coarse-grained simulation을 통해 알 수 있었다. 또한, MP2 이론으로 구한 force field에서 BSSE를 보정해주면 실험적으로 구한 메탄의 상 전이 온도와 더 근사한 값의 시뮬레이션 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이를 통해 전자 간의 상호작용을 더 정교하게 계산하는 MP2 이론으로 force field를 구해서 BSSE를 보정해주면 계산의 결과가 정확해진다는 것을 알 수 있었으며 이것이 EDISON_CHEM의 솔버들로 가능하다는 것을 제시하였다.

Autopoiesis, Affordance, and Mimesis: Layout for Explication of Complexity of Cognitive Interaction between Environment and Human (오토포이에시스, 어포던스, 미메시스: 환경과 인간의 인지적 상호작용의 복잡성 해명을 위한 밑그림)

  • In order to unravel the problems of the mind, today's cognitive science has expanded its perspective from the narrow framework of the past computer model or neuronal network model to the wider frameworks of interaction with the brain in interaction with the body in interaction with their environments. The theories of 'the extended mind', 'embodied mind', or 'enactive mind' appeared through such processes are working on a way to move into the environments while the problem to unravel the complex process of interactions between the mind, the body and the environments are left alone. This problem can be traced back as far as to Gibson and Maturana & Varela who tried at first to unravel the problem of the mind in terms of interaction between the brain, the body and there environments in 1960~70s. It's because Gibson stressed the importance of the 'affordance' provided by the environment while Maturana & Varela emphasized the 'autonomy' of auto-poiesis of life. However, it will be proper to say that there are invariants in the affordances provided by the environment as well as the autonomy of life in the state of structural coupling of the environment's variants and life's openness toward the environment. In this case, the confrontational points between Gibson and Maturana & Varela will be resolved. In this article, I propose Benjamin's theory of mimesis as a mediator of both theories. Because Benjamin's concept of mimesis has the process of making a constellation of the embodiment of the affordance and the enaction of new affordance into the environment at the same time, Gibson's concept of the affordance and Maturana & Varela's concept of embodiment and enaction will be so smoothly interconnected to circulate through the medium of Benjamin's concept of mimesis.

Comparision of Chemical Compositions between Cultured and Wild Fishes (1) Comparision between Cultured and Wild Eel Lipids (양식 및 천연산 어류의 화학성분에 관한 연구 1) 양식 및 천연산 뱀장어의 지질성분)

  • The muscle lipids of cultured and wild eel, Anguilla japonica, were analysed by gas chromatography for fatty acid compositions of total lipid(TL), neutral lipid(NL), phospholipid(PL) and glycolipid(GL). And high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) patterns of NL were analysed by HPLC. The lipid contents of dorsal muscle of cultured fish are slightly lower than that of wild fish. The contents of TL, NL and PL of wild fish were similar to those of cultured fish, while GL content of wild fish was higher than that of cultured one. In the fatty acid compositions of TL, NL and PL, percentages of $C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1}\;and\;C_{22:6}$ in cultured fish are higher than these in wild one, while percentage of $C_{16:1}$ is lower. Elution patterns in HPLC of NL of wild and cultured eel were slightly different.

  • In this Paper. we Propose a digital watermarking scheme for digital images based on a perceptual model, the frequency masking, texture making, and luminance masking Properties of the human visual system(HVS), which have been developed in the context of image compression. We embed two types of watermark, one is pseudo random(PN) sequences, the other is a logo image. To embed the watermarks, original images are decomposed into $8\times8$ blocks, and the discrete cosine transform(DCT) is carried out for each block. Watermarks are casted in the low frequency components of DCT coefficients. The perceptual model adjusts adaptively scaling factors embedding watermarks according to the local image properties. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme presents better results than that of non-perceptual watermarking methods for image qualify without loss of robustness.

The Effect of Memory Load on Maintenance in Face and Spatial Working Memory: An Event-Related fMRI Study (기억부하가 얼굴과 공간 작업기억의 유지에 미치는 효과: 사건유관 fMRI 연구)

  • In order to evaluate the domain-specific model and process-specific model of spatial and nonspatial working memory (WM), this study manipulated the memory load of the delayed response task and examined how the neural correlates of memory load effect was influenced by the stimulus domain (face and location) at the maintenance stage of WM using an event-related fMRI experiment. One or three face stimuli were presented as target stimuli and participants were asked to maintain the face itself (face WM) or the location of face stimuli (spatial WM). The results of recognition judgment accuracy showed no difference between face WM and spatial WM, and showed equivalent memory load effects of both WM. As a result of brian image analysis, memory load effect at maintenance stage showed that inferior, middle, and superior PFC were recruited by both face WM and spatial WM, and showed that VLPFC was the commonly activated area by both WM, supporting functional specialization of PFC by process components of WM. This study provides evidence for process-specific model in which maintenance of WM is associated with VLPFC.

  • Decoding processes in portable media players have a high computational cost, resulting in high power consumption by the CPU. If decoding computations are reduced, the power consumed by the CPU is also be reduced, but such a choice generally results in a degradation of the video quality for the users, so it is essential to address this tradeoff. We proposed a new CPU power management scheme that can make use of the scalability property available in the H.164/SVC standard. We first proposed a new video quality model that makes use of a video quality metric(VQM) in order to efficiently take into account the different quantization factors in the SVC. We then propose a new dynamic voltage scaling(DVS) scheme that can selectively combine the previous decoding times and frame sizes in order to accurately predict the next decoding time. We then implemented a scheme on a commercial smartphone and performed a user test in order to examine how users react to the VQM difference. Real measurements show that the proposed scheme uses up to 34% fewer energy than the Linux DVFS governor, and user tests confirm that the degradation in the quality is quite tolerable.

Lipid Components of Dried Laver(Cultured Porphyra tenera and Wild Porphyra suborbiculata) Produced at Wan-do in Korea (완도산 마른 참김(양식산)과 마른 둥근돌김(천연산)의 지방질 조성)

  • Lipids extracted from two kinds of sun-dried laver samples, wild Porphyra suborbiculata and cultured Porphyra tenera, produced at Wan-do in Korea were studied. Dried P. suborbiculata contained $0.8\%$ total lipid(TL) which consisted of $21.4\%$ neutral lipid(NL), $53.4\%$ glycolipid(GL) and $25.2\%$ phospholipid(PL), and dried P. tenera contained $1.2\%$ TL which consisted of $30.5\%$ NL, $50.3\%$ GL and $19.2\%$ PL. Among the NL of dried P. suborbiculate and P. tenera, free fatty acid ($41.4\%,\;39.0\%$), triglyceride($25.6\%,\;28.8\%$) and free sterol ($22.1\%,\;16.7\%$) were predominant. Digalactosyl diglyceride ($34.7\%,\;46.6\%$) and monogalactosyl diglyceride ($19.2\%,\;18.0\%$) were the major components among the GL. Sulfoquinovosyl digylceride ($4.2\%$) was also identified in P. tenera only. And main lipids in the PL of P. suborbiculata and P. tenera were phosphatidyl ethanolamine ($40.3\%,\;35.7\%$) and phosphatidyl choline ($28.6\%,\;30.7\%$) and followed by phosphatidyl serine($15.1\%,\;19.2\%$) and phosphatidyl inositol ($16.0\%,\;14.4\%$). The major fatty acids in the TL of the dried P. suborbiculata were 20:5 ($29.4\%$), 16:0 ($23.4\%$) and 20:4 ($13.0\%$), and those of the dried P. tenera were 20:5 ($36.7\%$), 16:0 ($16.2\%$), 16:1 ($10.7\%$) and 18:1 ($9.7\%$). The fatty acid composition of the both samples in the NL fraction were similar to the pattern in those of the TL. The abundant fatty acids in the PL of the both dried laver were 20:5, 16:0 and 18:1. In case of the GL fraction, the main fatty acids of the dried P. suborbiculata were 16:0, 20:5, 18:1 and 20:4, while those of the dried P. tenera were 20:5, 16:0 and 18:1.
