A Study on the Understanding of Yang Xiong (揚雄) Held by Korean Confucian Scholars in the Joseon Dynasty (조선조 유학자들의 양웅(揚雄) 이해에 관한 연구)

  • This paper aims to find out from what perspective Joseon Dynasty Confucian scholars evaluated and understood Yang Xiong's guiding principles and literature at the micro level and to reveal the academic trends of Joseon Dynasty Confucian scholars. This topic is approached as follows: first, an evaluation of Yang Xiong's way of living as a 'senior state official of Wang Mang (the controversial Emperor of the short-lived Xin Dynasty)'; second, Yang Xiong's literary character and his literary works; third, Yang Xiong's writing style; and fourth, Yang Xiong's view of good and evil. These can be summarized in three main ways: One is to agree with Zhu Xi's criticism of Yang Xiong as a 'senior state official of Wang Mang' and dismiss his guiding principles, academic achievements, literature, and other accomplishments. Most of these negatives have been found in Confucian scholars who are especially enthusiastic about theology. Examples include Hong Jikpil, Wi Baekgyu, Kim Wonhaeng, and Lee Sangjeong. In the case of kings such as King Yeong-Jo, the assessment of Yang Xiong is quite similar. The following assessments of Yang Xiong are positive though. Positive assessments are presented from two different views. One is a balanced approach that covers both the positive and negative aspects of Yang Xiong. For example, Heo-Kyun's understanding. Another positive view can be analyzed from three perspectives. The first case is when the scholars assessing Yang Xiong were not deeply influenced by Zhu Xi's criticism of him. Seo Geojeong and Seong-Hyeon are examples. The second case are those that broke away from theology or adhered to Silhak [Practical Studies]. Yi-Ik is an example. Third, assessments from scholars who posited that truth was of a pluralistic nature. Jang-Yu is an example of such scholars. Regarding theories of human nature; however, there was consensus among Confucian scholars that Mengzi held that human nature is good, and thereby it was common to criticize Yang Xiong's theory that human nature was a mixture of good and evil. From an ideal micro perspective, Joseon Dynasty Confucian scholars' different assessments of Yang Xiong show that their understanding and evaluation of Yang Xiong differed in accordance with their own differing worldviews and ideas.

A comparative study on the 'Xuan'in the view of Yangxiong & Gehong(1) (양웅(揚雄)과 갈홍(葛洪)의 '현(玄)' 개념 비교 연구(1) - 우주생성론을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper aims to examine the meaning of 'Xuan(玄)' in the cosmogony, especially in the view of Yang-xiong(揚雄) and Ge-hong(葛洪). The concept 'Xuan' is thought to have originated in the XianQin text Laozi & Zhouyi. After the XianQin period, this concept has been defined as philosophical concept, and it has a variety of meanings. This paper discussed about the cause of creation, the differentiation process, and the existence principle, within the cosmogony of Yang-xiong & Ge-hong. First, the cause of creation in the Yang-xiong is efficient cause in the state of the elementary substance, but also is the principle that is applied to the phase of the creation. While the cause of creation in the Ge-hong is comprised of the cause of the creation and the existence principle. Thus, the meaning of the concept 'Xuan' in the both scholar is different from the matter monism. Second, the concept 'Xuan' in the both scholar contains the tendency of cosmogony and ontology. Yang-xiong maintains the cosmogony, but he also hold on the rudimentary view of ontology. While Ge-hong display a tendency of ontology. Third, Ge-hong accepted the view of Yang-xiong and he developed the meaning of the existence principle. And finally, the concept 'Xuan' in the both scholar forms a philosophical system. Yang-xiong insisted that the concept 'Xuan' is the basis of the universe, the human-being and the society. While through realizing the concept 'Xuan', Ge-hong tried to pursue the human-being's agelessness and the eternal life.

  • This paper aims to examine the meaning of 'Xuan(玄)' in the cosmology and astronomy, especially in the view of Yang-xiong(揚雄) and Ge-hong(葛洪). The cosmology of the ancient China has opened a discussion about the Tian(天), through the discussion about the celestial structure, the structure and the location relation of the heaven & earth, in the Han-dynasty has been found a systematic theory. But in the ancient Chinese philosophy, the cosmology has been developed in the field of the astronomy & the Oriental calendar. In this context, Yang-xiong(揚雄) and Ge-hong(葛洪) have founded the system of the cosmology, it is as in the following. First, Yang-xiong criticized sharply the theory of Gaitian(蓋天說) and advanced the theory of Huntian(渾天說). And Ge-hong support the theory of Huntian(渾天說) and also accepted the theory of Xuanye(宣夜說). Second, Yang-xiong(揚雄) and Ge-hong(葛洪)'s cosmology is regarded as the theoretical premise of their cosmogony. As the discussion about the celestial structure, the structure and the location relation of the heaven & earth, both scholar discussed about the cause of creation, the differentiation process. And in the this context, they founded the cosmology as the concept 'Xuan'. Third, the concept 'Xuan' in the both scholar forms a philosophical system. Yang-xiong insisted that the concept 'Xuan' is the basis of the universe, the human-being and the society. While through realizing the concept 'Xuan', Ge-hong tried to pursue the human-being's agelessness and the eternal life. In this way, their view point of the cosmology is comprised of cosmogony & astronomy. With this perspective, they are going to found the system of their own philosophy.

Application of Ultrasound for the Decomposition of Musty-Odorous Compounds in Water (수용액 중 Musty-Odorous Compound류의 분해에 따른 초음파의 응용)

  • Musty-odorous compound (Geosmin, 2-Methylisobrneol) 수용액 중에 초음파 (200kHz, $6.0W/cm^{2}$)를 조사시켜 조사시간에 따른 농도 및 취기의 변화를 고찰했다. 초음파 조사에 의해 이 물질들은 빠르게 분해되었고 분해 형태는 농도에 대한 유사1차 반응을 나타내었다. 공기 포화 분위기에서 이들의 초기 분해속도는 각각 2.5 $10^{-3}{\;}Msec^{-1}$(2-MIB), 3.2 $10^{-3}{\;}Msec^{-1}$ (Geosmin)로 나타났다. 초음파 조사 시 포화가스 (Envelope gas)의 영향은 아르곤(Ar) 산소($O_{2}$) 공기(Air) 질소($N_{2}$) 순서로 순수한 아르곤(Ar) 분위기에서 musty-odorous compound 류의 분해가 가장 빠르게 진행되었고 그 분해생성물로 CO, $CO_{2}$ 그리고 HCOOH, $CH_{3}COOH$ 등의 저급 유기산류가 검출되었다. 또한 이들의 분해반응은 물의 초음파분해에 따라 생성된 hydroxylradical에 의한 radical반응, cavitation bubble내에서의 고온고압에 의한 열분해 및 직접연소반응으로 진행됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • In this paper, We have conducted a Compact SELCA-Rod design by using FreeCAD. FreeCAD is many modern design applications such as Revit or CATIA. It is based on the concept of Workbench. A Workbench can be considered as a set of tools specially grouped for a certain task. Also It has an extensive list of features FreeCAD implements. We use this practical tool and proceed the research on Compact SELCA-Rod which is attracted the most IT-related products in 2014. SELCA-Rod is mostly based on rod-shaped form as in name. However rod-shaped design has the biggest problem for mobile Through this research, We propose a new type of SELCA-Rod. It is easy to carry and take pictures from different angle.

On the Fundamental Issue of Ho-Rak Controversy (호락논쟁(湖洛論爭)의 핵심 쟁점 : 심(心)과 기질(氣質)의 관계 문제)

  • The Ho-Rak controversy is an internal dispute in the Kiho School. Both Ho and Rak adopt the theories of Yulgok(栗谷) as their common standard of right arguments. The controversy continues almost two hundred years after the dispute between LEE Gan(李柬) and HAN Wonjin(韓元震). However, it does not develop rich theoretical resources. The fundamental issue of Ho-Rak controversy is how to define the relation of mind(心) and temper(氣質). Ho School regard temper as material of the mind, and so they insist that mind and temper are ultimately the same. But Rak School regard temper as desire of the body, and so they insist that mind and temper are the another one. The viewpoint of Rak School does not correspond to the view of the traditional Neo-confucianism. So we should understand that mind and temper are ultimately the same. However if we define that mind and temper are the same, and they act at the same time, then we can not insure the foundation of pure goodness in human mind. LEE Chulyoung(李喆榮) defines that mind and temper are ultimately the same, but they act alternately. It is the exact definition about the relation of mind and temper.
