  • These studies were carried out to investigate the fumigant toxicity, the contact toxicity and the ovipositional repellency of 25 monoterpenoids against oak longicorn beetle adults, Moechotypa diphysis. Monoterpenoids with 100% of fumigant toxicity were 1, 8-cinehone, fenchone, pulegone and (equation omitted)-terpinene at 20 (equation omitted)/954 ml (air) concentration, pulegone and (equation omitted)-terpinen at 10 (equation omitted)/954 ml (air) concentration, pulegone at 5 (equation omitted)/954 ml (air) concentration. Most monoterpenoids showed low or no contact toxicity but only pulegone showed about 70% mortality. Some monoterpenoids which had repellency to female adults with Y-tube olfactometer were bornylacetate, carvacrol, 1, 8-cineole and menthol at 1 (equation omitted) dose, while citronellol showed attractant response. Carveol, geraniol and perillyl alcohol of 25 monoterpenoids showed ovipoistional repellency of 82.1%, 78.3%, 87.5%, respectively, at the concentration of 1,000 ppm in the laboratory condition. In the field, the result tested with three monoterpenoids indicated that geraniol was the most effective one at the concentration of 10,000ppm and 1,000 ppm, but residual effect wasn't found.

  • Seismic reflection data are integrated with fieldwork data in order to understand startigraphy, structural geology and hydrocarbon potentials of Cretaceous strata in the Mesopotamian basin, Northeastern Iraq. Cretaceous strata in the basin divided into the Qamchuqa, Kometan, Bekhme and Shiranish formations, which are composed of carbonates deposited in shallow marine environment. The geological structures in these formations are mainly recognized as thrusts, detachment folds, fault propagation folds and fault bend folds. As well, NW-SE trending fractures are regularly developed, and are horizontal or perpendicular to the structures. The distribution and frequency of fractures are related to the development of the thrusts. In terms of hydrocarbon potentials, Cretaceous strata in the basin have limited capacities for source rocks and seal rocks due to the lack of organic carbon content and the well-developed fractures, respectively. Although these carbonates have limited primary porosity, however, development of the secondary porosity derived from the fractures contributes to enhance the reservoir quality. Most important factor for the reservoir quality of Cretaceous strata seems to be the frequency and connectivity of fractures relative to locations of folds and faults. The results delineated in this study will use as reference for recognizing stratigraphy and structures of Cretaceous strata and will provide useful information on hydrocarbon potentials of Cretaceous strata in the Mesopotamian basin, NE Iraq.

  • The Munamdong Formation is a small scale sedimentary deposit which is located in Yuljeonri, Naemyeon, Hongcheon Gangwon-do. In order to understand the depositional environment and its sequential change in the formation, sedimentary facies analysis was conducted. The result indicates that the Munamdong Formation began to be deposited in alluvial fan system accompanying volcanic activity and gradually deposited in lake system. As well, U-Pb, K-Ar and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ ages are determined from the Munamdong Formation. The SHRIMP U-Pb Phanerozoic Eon age of the detrital zircons in the middle part of the Munamdong formation yields $229.8{\pm}2.5Ma$. The K-Ar and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ ages of the volcanic rock in the lowermost part of the Munamdong formation are $203.7{\pm}3.9Ma$ and $227.4{\pm}8.4Ma$ respectively. These results confirm that the Munamdong Formation was deposited during the Late Triassic, indicating that the basin might be formed due to post-collisional rifting or collapsing.

  • Adoxophyes spp. are the major rests of a pear. The larvae attack both leaves and fruits. (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac), (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:Ac), (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:Ac) and 10-methyldodecyl acetate (10me-12:Ac) have been reported as the sex pheromone components of the genus Adoxophyes. Our objective was to determine the difference in sex pheromone composition of three different A. spp. populations each from Cheonan, Sangju, and Naju area orchards in Korea. Gas chromatography (GC) analyses of pheromone gland extracts of virgin females confirmed the presence of two compounds (Z9-14:Ac and Z11-14:Ac) in Cheonan and Sangju populations, and four compounds (Z9-14:Ac, Z11-14:Ac, E11-14:Ac and tome-12:Ac) in Naju population. The Z9-14:Ac and Z11-14:Ac were detected in the ratio of 80:20 in the Cheonan population and 3:97 in the Sangju population. Females of Naju population produced sex pheromone blend consisting of Z9-14:Ac, Z11-14:Ac, E11-14:Ac and 10me-12:Ac at a ratio of 31:62:6:1. Field trapping tests in pear orchards with Z9-14:Ac and Z11-14:Ac indicated that maximum captures of the male were obtained with traps baited by 80:20 in Cheonan, 10:90 in Sangju, and 30:70 in Naju. These results suggest that there are remarkable geographical variations in the sex pheromone composition of A. spp. in pear orchards in Korea, and taxonomic classification of these species must be carefully assessed.

  • Sedimentary facies of the Middle to Upper Cambrian Sesong Formation, Taebacksan Basin, are analyzed using detailed field mapping and stratigraphic section measuring. As a result, five sedimentary facies are recognized in the formation, which include lime nodule bearing shale facies, anastomosing wackestone-packstone facies, well-laminated siltstone facies, fine to medium sandstone facies and lime pebble conglomerate facies. Together with sedimentary facies analysis, study on vertical facies variation indicates that the Sesong Formation was deposited in an outer to inner shelf during relative sea-level fall. Especially, shallow marine aspects of the upper part of the Sesong Formation including 10-m-thick, fine to medium-grained sandstones appear to be very similar with the shallow marine strata accumulated during the Steptoean Stage (Dunderbergia) in Laurentia. These lithofacies comparisons of coeval strata between two continents suggest that sedimentation in the Sesong Formation reflects the influence of global sea-level fall occurred during the late Middle Cambrian to early Late Cambrian. As well, a stratigraphic discontinuity surface that may have sequence stratigraphic significance is recognized within the shallow marine sandstone beds of the uppermost Sesong Formation. This stratigraphic discontinuity surface may correspond to the Sauk II-III sequence boundary in Laurentia. Therefore, results delineated in this study will use a new stratigraphic paradigm for regional correlation of the Middle to Late Cambrian strata (e.g., the Sesong Formation) in the Taebacksan Basin, and will provide very useful information on intercontinental stratigraphic correlation in the future.

  • We evaluated two herbal plants, basil (Ocimum basilicum) and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), for their potential as repellent plants in the management of striped flea beetle (Phyllotreta striolata), in organic production of chinese cabbage. It was confirmed that striped flea beetle avoided these two herbal plants in olfactometer experiment. We conducted field experiment in which the suppressive effect of the two selected herbal plants and cruciferous crops preferred by striped flea beetle were evaluated through cultivating as inter crops and border crops, respectively. In inter-cropping experiment, unlike in vitro test, the density of striped flea beetle was low in basil- or mustard-intercropping cultivation plot, but high in lemon balm-intercropping cultivation plot. In border cropping experiment, the density of striped flea beetle on chinese cabbage in lemon balm or basil cultivation plot were approximately zero. As a result of this study, we think that border cropping of lemon balm or basil can be used to reduce preventively striped flea beetle of chinese cabbage under organic farming system.

  • The occurrence of plum fruit moth, Grapholita dimorpha, has been recently reported in apple orchards in Korea. It has been suspected that G. dimorpha and its related species, G. molesta, may occur simultaneously in other host plants. This study reports the occurrence of G. dimorpha in pear orchards of different localities in Korea. The identification of G. dimorpha was determined by morphological characters and the DNA marker. The cross-trapping of both species may be possible because the major sex pheromone (SP) compositions for the two species are similar. From the monitoring data, G. dimorpha and G. molesta were caught in SP lure traps of G. dimorpha and both species were also caught in SP lure traps of G. molesta. This cross-trapping of G. molesta to a SP lure of G. dimorpha varied significantly among pear orchards in different geographical localities. Furthermore, the occurrence peaks of the two species were not coincidental in all monitored orchards. These suggest that monitoring data obtained from each SP trap of both species in pear orchards may be mixed with two species, which would result in the over-estimation of population density and peak frequency on both species in pear orchards.

  • The Northwestern Okcheon Metamorphic Belt in the Chungju area consists of the Munjuri Formation, the Daehyangsan Quartzite, the Hyangsanri Dolomite, and the Gyemyeongsan Formation, but the stratigraphy is still controversial. For a stratigraphic study, detailed stratigraphic sections were measured in two locations and mapping was carried out in the study area. The Munjuri Formation and the Daehyangsan Quartzite changed gradually in north and south section, but bedding parallel faults have developed in the boundary between two formations. The Daehyangsan Quartzite and the Hyangsanri Dolomite are conformable. Fault have developed in boundary between the Hyangsanri Dolomite and the Gyemyeongsan Formation. As a result of mapping in the study area, folding was recognized with $41^{\circ}/280^{\circ}$ plunging axis in the north part of the study area. Therefore, the bedding-parallel faults in the boundary might have occurred resulting from a layer parallel slip during the folding as well as the thrust. These results from this study and previous studies indicate that bedding-parallel faults in boundary between the Munjuri Formation and the Daehyangsan Quartzite are caused by a layer parallel slip during the folding. The fault between the Hyangsanri Dolomite and the Gyemyeongsan Formation is considered as a thrust fault, thereby the uppermost Gyemyeongsan Formation is placed under the Munjuri Formation. However the Gyemyeongsan Formation and the Munjuri Formation have similar age and rock composition. Hence, the Gyemyeongsan Formation is considered as an equivalent one with the Munjuri Formation. Therefore, the stratigraphy of Northwestern Okcheon Metamorphic Belt consists of the Gyemyeongsan/ Munjuri formations, the Daehyangsan Quartzite, and the Hyangsanri Dolomite in ascending order.

  • Cretaceous intrusive and extrusive rocks are widely distributed in the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula, possibly the result of intensive magmatism which occurred in response to subduction of the western proto-Pacific plate beneath the north-eastern part of the Eurasian plate. Geochemical and petrological study on the Cretaceous granitic rocks were carried out in order to constrain the petrogenesis of the granitic magma and to establish the paleotectonic environment of the area. Whole rock chemical data of the granitic rocks from the study area indicate that the all the rocks have characteristics of calc-alkaline series in the subalkaline field. The overall geochemical features show systematic variations in each granitic body, but the source materials of each granitic body are thought to have been different in their chemical composition. Higher values of $Fe_2O_3/FeO$ of the granitic rocks in the western area suggest that the granitoids had been solidified under highly oxidizing environment. The granitic bodies in the eastern area also show higher contents of Li, Ni, Co, Sr, Cr, Sc and lower Rb and Nb compared to the those of the western area. Chondrite normalized REE patterns show generally enriched LREE and strong negative Eu anomalies in the western wet while slight to flat Eu anomalies in the east-ern area. The REE and $(La/Lu)_{CN}$ of the granites are $60{\~}499ppm$ and $8.9{\~}66$ correspond to the range of the continental margin granite. On the ANK vs. ACNK and tectonic discrimination diagrams, parental magma type of the granites corresponds to I-type, VAG and syn-collision granite. Interpretations of the chemical characteristics of the granitic rocks favor their emplacement in a compressional tectonic regime at continental margin during the subduction of proto-Pacific plate.
