  • Structural behavior of built-up compression members with unsymmetric connectors under buckling status has been studied through these experiments. When the distance between adjacent H-300 beams of built-up compression member is 2 m in length, and the H-300 beams are lengthened up to 30 m in length with three-10 m-H-beams by bolts and double arrayed, three specimen having each connector plate, single channel, double channel are experimented for evaluating buckling loads. The buckling loads from the experiments are compared with buckling loads of structural analysis using FEM and buckling loads of Timoshenko Eq. in order to figure out how the connectors' type affects on longitudinal and lateral displacements, also strain of the built-up compression members as well. The result from the experiments show that the buckling loads 4.2% decreases in double channel connectors and 36.6% decreases in single channel connectors than plate connectors.

  • Design and detailing requirements of seismic provisions for Concentrically Braced Frames (CBF) were specified based on the premise that bracing members with large KL/r and low b/t have superior seismic performance. However, relatively few tests have been done to investigate the cyclic behavior of CBF. Therefore, the question lies on whether the compression member of CBF plays as significant a role as what has been typically assumed by design providers. In this paper, existing experimental data were reviewed to quantify the extent of hysteretic energy achieved by bracing members in past compression tests as well as the extent of degradation of the compression force given repeated cycling loading.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the residual strength of fire damaged high-performance concrete flexural and compressive members. The compressive strength of specimens is 55MPa and the main parameter for comparison is the exposure time to fire. In case of beams, the cover thickness made the differences in spalled section area, residual strength and serviceability. The exposure time to fire did not affect on the spalled section area in case of compressive members without loading. However, the residual strength and stiffness was reduced by the time exposed to fire. This study can be used to estimate the performance of fire damaged high-strength concrete structural members for reusing and to give the information for repairing and strengthening.

  • Compressive strength of concrete compression members strengthend with carbon fiber laminate(CFL) were studied from the test results. Test parameters are spacing, thickness, width, ply and spliced length of carbon fiber laminates. Specimens strength with sheets failed with sudden tensile rupture of the laminate, which indicate very brittle failure mode. Test result shows that closer spacing and to increas thickness of CFL is more effective. But strengthening ratio with 1-ply CFL is more effective than that of specimen with 2-ply CFL. Compressive strength capacity of specimen splied 24cm shows almost similar strength to that of non-spliced specimen. The ultimate load carrying of specimen strengthened with CFL ranges 1.11~1.86 times of that of non-strengthened specimen.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the seismic behavior of the bracing members. Lee and Goel's (1987) concrete filling in the hollow structural section (HSS) reduced the severity of local buckling and increased the fracture life. However, concrete filling in the HSS did not prevent the occurrence of local buckling in the midsection of the bracing member, which resulted in continuous strength degradation. This study investigated the seismic behavior of the concrete-filled HSS bracing member, which is reinforced by ribs in the midsection of the bracing member. The main variable of the specimens is rib length. The test results showed that buckling mode, cyclic compression strength, and energy dissipation capacity of the bracing members were affected by rib length. Specimen reinforced with ribs with a length of 63% had better structural performance.

  • When the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member is evaluated, the effect of member size is usually not considered. For various types of loading, however, the strength always decreases with the increment of member size. In this paper the size effect of a flexural compression member is investigated by experiments. For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive load and bending moment was tested using three different sizes of specimens with a compressive strength of 528 kg/$cm^2$. According to test results the size effect on flexural compressive strength was apparent, and more distinct than that for uniaxial compressive strength of cylinders. Finally a model equation was derived using regression analyses with experimental data.

  • Corrosion and degradation of reinforced structures due to abnormal climates and natural disasters further accelerate the aging of structures. Coping with the decrease in structure performance, many old structures are being repaired and reinforced with low-weight and high-strength materials such as glass fiber composite material (GFRP). To further contribute, this paper focus on a more economical and eco-friendly material, basalt fiber composite (BFRP), which provide a more effective lateral constraint effect for seismic reinforcement. The main variables considered in this study are the curing temperature during the manufacturing of BFRP and the material characteristics of the target concrete member. The lateral constraint reinforcement effect was investigated through the evaluation of the performance of normal concrete and those with improved durability through fiber reinforcement. The reinforcement effect was 3.15 times for normal concrete and 3.72 times for fiber reinforced concrete, and the difference in reinforcement effect due to the improvement of the durability characteristics of the compression member was not significant. Lastly, the performance of the BFRP was compared with the results of the GFRP reinforcement from the previous study. The effect of the BFRP reinforcement was 1.18 times better than that of the GFRP reinforcement.

  • Since FRP materials have various advantages over steel, many research activities to use them for the civil engineering applications are now in progress. The present paper deals with the local buckling behavior of FRP pultruded members as a first step toward the development of design criteria. In the design of compression members, it is very important to know not only if local buckling occurs or not but also which plate component governs local buckling, but it is not easy to perform this work in a rigorous manner. In the present paper, a simple and accurate equation which can compute the coefficients of buckling of orthotropic plates and local buckling of pultruded compression members is suggested by performing rigorous analysis, energy analysis, and parametric study. The local buckling strength and the plate component governing the local buckling behavior of thin-walled pultruded compression members can be easily determined by using the proposed equation.

The result shows that the buckling loads tend to sharply decrease non-linearly according to connectors' interval increases. As well as that, the differences between experimental buckling loads and theoretical buckling loads and between experimental buckling loads and structural analyses buckling loads also have a tendency to be increased as the connector interval increases.
