  • In general, precise linear actuators using piezoelectric element are driven by friction force. Exact understanding of friction plays an important role in analysis and control of a motor. In this research, we designed a precise linear actuator using piezoelectric elements and observed its dynamic characteristics. By varying phase angle difference and amplitudes of the sinusoidal waves that are driving inputs, we can know that it is possible to control moving direction and distance of the slider. As preload is increased, its moving distance is decreased. And also, we have modeled a precise linear actuator using stick slip friction models such as classical, Karnopp. and reset integrator. Finally, by comparing the results of simulation and experiment, it was verified that the model is well designed.

  • This paper presents the analysis of a time reversal process for $A_0$ Lamb wave mode($A_0$ mode) on a rectangular plate. The dispersion characteristic equation of the $A_0$ mode is approximated using the Timoshenko beam theory. A virtual sensor array model is developed to consider the effects of reflections occurring on the plate boundary on the time reversal process. The time reversal process is formulated in the frequency domain using the virtual sensor array model. The reconstructed signal is obtained in the time domain through an inverse fast Fourier transform. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through the comparison to the numerical simulation results computed by the finite element analysis.

  • In this paper, genetic algorithm (GA)-based Thin Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator (FBAR) RF filter design technique is proposed. Since the BVD(Butterworth-Van Dyke) lumped element model is valid only around the resonance, FBAR filter design technique based on BVD circuit has an approximate error. Instead of using BVD model, optimizing filter design method utilizes an analytical electrical impedance equation of FBAR. The geometry of FBAR such as thickness of the piezoelectric layer and area which significantly affect the filter response is optimized by GA. US-PCS Rx Bandpass filter obtained by the proposed technique shows a better response comparing with the typical and BVD-based filter.

  • In this paper, a Wittrick-Williams algorithm is developed for the spectral element model of an elastic-piezoelectric two-layer active beam. This algorithm may help calculate all the required natural frequencies, which lie below any chosen frequency, without the possibility of missing any due to close grouping or due to the abrupt sign changes of the determinant of spectral element matrix via infinity instead of via zero. A uniform active beam and a partially patched active beam are considered as the illustrative examples to confirm the present algorithm.

  • Most of present ultrasonic distance measurement technologies are based on the measurement of the TOF (: Time of Flight), the elapsed time during which the ultrasonic wave travels from its transmitter to receiver, to evaluate the distance the wave travels during that time. In this case, high distance measurement accuracy requires an accurate measurement of TOF. In order to acquire an accurate TOF, this paper proposes a method that produces the TOF by using a mathematical model of the received signal obtained from a mathematical model of ultrasonic transducer. The proposed method estimates the arrival time of the received signal retrospectively by comparing its wave form obtained after triggering point with its mathematical model in the sense of least-square. Experimental result shows that the effect of variation of triggering point can be decreased by implementing the proposed method.

  • In this work, a precies actuator which is capable of high positioning accuracy is developed. For estimation the dynamic behavior of the actuator, system modeling is performed by employing a stick-slip frection law. Dynamic characteristics over various types of driving input signals and vibraiton loci of the driving tip are examined by experiments. Phase differences between the input signals are applied, and the dynamic behavior of slider is investigated. From the simulation and experimental results, it is observed that the dynamic behaviors from the simulation results agree fairly well to those of the experimental results. Thisindicates that the model developed in this work is applicable to other precision mechanisms in which a friction farce is as improtant factor for actuation.

  • This paper proposes the modeling scheme of the Miniature Universal Testing Machine (MUTM) composed of 36 thin-beam-type bimorph PZTs and the control algorithm to minimize the residual vibration of the MUTM in the dynamic testing of specimens. In the operation of the MUTM, hysteresis, residual displacement and vibration of it are major issues. From the analysis of the MUTM behaviors, the hysteresis is described by the curving fitting scheme with the function of an input voltage. The dynamic characteristics of the MUTM are identified by the frequency domain modeling technique based on the experimental data. The interested bandwidth is focused on 125-315HZ for effective modeling and control. For the robust vibration control of the MUTM, the sliding mode control and the Kalman filter as observer are proposed. The paper also proposes the best input signal type to operate the MUTM effectively. The feasibility of the proposed modeling scheme and control algorithm are tested and verified experimentally.

  • Recently, energy harvesting technology is increasing due to the fossil fuel shortages. To compensate problem of low generating power than other energy harvesters, many researchers have studied about piezoelectric harvester for obtaining high output. In this paper, four kinds of unimorph based piezoelectric harvesters were proposed and its generating characteristics were studied. Each of the piezoelectric harvesters has three, four, and six unimorph arms, respectively, and the arms are symmetrically arranged from one central point. The centrosymmetric structure of the harvesters guarantees more stable and multiplied generation than a cantilever-type harvester since the arms of the harvester resonate at same frequency. Resonance frequency, output voltage, displacement, and stress characteristics of the generator were analyzed by using a FEM (finite element method) program. Harvesters were fabricated on the basis of analysis results. Experimental results were compared with simulated results.
