  • One-Dimensional Nonlinear Consolidation Model(NCM) ivas developed by using an Extended Power Function Model, which could represent the compressibility of soils. A nonlinear finite element program for NCM was developed to analyze the porewater pressure dissipation and the settlement of saturated soils. Parameters used in compressibility model could be easily obtained from conventional oedometer test data. This model has been applied to Yansan-Mulgum area for the comparison with the results of CONSOL program and that of Terzaghi theory. A Good The rates of consolidation predicted by this model and CONSOL were faster than that of conventional Tergaghi theory, for they consider the nonlinear characteristics of soils. Consolidation curves of this model were located between Terzaghi and CONSOL curves. Consolidation curves near drainage boundary, where effective stress valied rapidly, seemed to reflect the variations of compressibility of sails. Consolidation curves near drainage boundary obtained from this model were composed of two parabolic curves. Intersection of the parabolic curves occurred when effective stress reached the value of preconsolidation stress. Moreover, thin model could be used to represent the effect of magnitude of applied load. whereas CONSOL and Terazghi theory could not.

  • In order to analyze effects of strain rate on consolidation characteristics of Busan clay, a series of constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation tests with different strain rate and incremental loading tests (ILT) were performed. From experimental test results on Busan clay, it was found that the preconsolidation pressure was dependent on the corresponding strain rate occurring during consolidation process. Also, consolidation curves normalized with respect to preconsolidation pressure gave a unique stress-strain curve. Coefficient of consolidation and permeability estimated from CRS test had a tendency to converge to a certain value at normally consolidated range regardless of strain rate. An increase in excess pore pressure was observed after the end of loading without change of total stress on the incremental loading test, which phenomenon is called Mandel-Cryer effect. It was also found that rapid generation of excess pore pressure took place due to collapse of soil structure as effective stress approached to preconsolidation pressure.

  • This study deals with the stress-strain-strain rate behaviour of overconsolidated clay. Consolidated-drained stress path tests were performed on the stress-time dependent condition. Stress history consists of rotation angle of stress path, overconsolidation ratio, and magnitude of length of recent stress path. Time history includes loading rate of recent and current stress path. Test results show that all influence factors have an increasing strain rate with time, and the strain rate varies with the change of the rotation angle of stress path. With the increase of overconsolidation ratio and loading rate of current stress path, the strain rate also increases. For the stress history, correlation between stress-strain and strain rate is indicated but the time history is not.

  • A series of conventional tests and CRS consolidation tests with different rates of strain were performed to investigate the consolidation characteristics of marine clay. Preconsolidation pressures were evaluated by applying previously proposed methods for both the conventional tests and CRS tests results in order to check the legitimacy of those methods. The effects of strain rate on effective consolidation stress strain relationship, porewater pressure, and preconsolidation pressure were also discussed It was found that the effective stress strain relationship and the preconsolidation pressure are a function of strain rate imposed during consolidation test, but compression index isn't. The preconsolidation pressure ratio ($a_2=\sigma'_{pCRS}/\sigma'_{pConv}$)of marine clay appears proportional to the logarithm of strain rate, with average values ranging from 1.11 to 1.30 for strain rates between $1\timesx10^{-4} %/sec\; and\; 4\times10 %/sec$. The porewater pressure ratio during CRS teats does not exceed 6.0% except when the strain rate is $6.67\times10^{-4} %/sec$. Coefficient of consolidation or coefficient of permeability at normally consolidated range was not affected by the type of consolidation tests and the strain rate. Typical values of compression index (C.), coefficient of consolidation(c.), and coefficient of permeability (k.) at normally consolidated range were 0.56-0.95, $0.56\times10^{-4}~3.0\times10^{-4}cm2/sec,\; and\; 2.0\times10^{-8}~7.0\time10^{-4}cm/sec,$ respectively.

  • The Field Velocity Probe (FVP) has been widely applied to determine the various characteristics of soils. This study seeks to estimate soil consolidation characteristics using an FVP and to increase its application in the field. The specimens were extracted from depths of 3 and 6 m at the study site, an area of soft clay in Incheon. In laboratory testing, the specimens were placed in an improved oedometer cell to measure shear wave velocity, and statistical analysis was performed to compare the results of effective stress and shear wave velocity. FVP enables increased resolution in the field because it measures the shear wave velocity every 20 cm. To estimate the condition of consolidation, we compared the results of shear wave velocities between those obtained in the laboratory and those in the field. The field conditions are used to analyze overconsolidated and normally consolidated soils at depths of 3 and 6 m, respectively. The results show that FVP is a suitable method for estimating the degree of consolidation.

  • A 5∼12m thick tideland has been created in front of a new sea-dyke due to the rapid sedimentation occurring for 22 years. It is confirmed from theoretical analysis and soil tests that the deposit is in under-consolidation state. An analysis shows that when the average sedimentation rate is over 1-5cm/year for a soil with $c_v$=0.0005-0.001$cm^2$/s, excess pore water pressure exists in the deposit. It is known that the lower sedimentation rate than average in the initial deposition stage results in lower dissipation of excess pore pressure and vice versa. It is emphasized that under-consolidation behavior should be taken account in settlement analysis because structures founded on such deposits give higher settlements.

  • Because the thickness and depth of consolidation layer vary at every location, the consolidation settlement and time have to be evaluated spatially. Also, for a rational evaluation of the uncertainty of the spatial distribution of consolidation settlement and time, it is necessary to adopt a probabilistic method. In this study, mean and standard deviation of consolidation settlement and time of whole analysis region are evaluated by using the spatial distribution of consolidation layer which is estimated from ordinary kriging and statistics of soil properties. Using these results and probabilistic method, the area that needs adopting the prefabricated vertical drain as well as raising the ground level for balancing the final design ground level is determined. It is observed that such areas are influenced by the variability of soil properties. The design procedure and method presented in this paper can be used in the decision making process for a geotechnical engineering design.
