  • The number of shops needed for the fabrication of a sphere type cargo tank for an LNG carrier is proportional to the size of the tank to be constructed. Due to the limitations of facility investment, it is difficult to fabricate various size tanks with a perfectly spherical shape in the (factory). An efficient method of increasing the capacity of the cargo tank is to extend the conventional sphere type LNG tank vertically by inserting a cylindrical shell structure. In this study, equations for the dynamic pressure distribution due to horizontal acceleration are derived for a sphere type LNG tank with central extension. The derived equations can be easily applied to the design and structural assessment of a sphere type LNG tank with central extension. Furthermore, the results of this study can be combined with the static design loads previously reported by Shin & Ko [9], in order to establish a simplified analysis method which enables a precise initial estimate to be obtained, thereby obviating the need for a time consuming finite element analysis.

  • In this study, the energy conversion equipment from the radiation energy to mechanical energy by using npentane as the operating fluid was constructed and the performance to pump the water was tested for the utilization of solar powered water pump. The equipment was designed optimally, after the theoretical analyses of the water pumping head and water quantity per cycle were done. The pentane vapour temperature in the condenser and the temperature of the outlet water from the condenser became lowered and the heat transfer rate became higher with decreasing the water inlet level to the condenser. The temperature difference between the condenser and the water tank was significant. Therefore, the distance between the water tank and condenser was recommended to be shorten and the diameter of their connecting pipe was recommended to be narrow in order to reduce the resistance of the fluid passage and improve the heat transfer rate. The amount of water pumped was 1.62.4 liters. Mass flow rate of the cooling water became lowered when the cooling water pipe was prolonged from the condenser to improve the heat transfer rate.

  • This paper presents the numerical study on the strength safety of the prestressed concrete outer tank for a LNG storage tank, which is manufactured by sets of membrane panels with special corrugations. This study for a finite element analysis assumes that the membrane panel of the inner tank was fractured and the liquefied natural gas stored in the inner membrane tank was leaked to the prestressed concrete outer tank. The stress and displacement of the outer tank have been analyzed for five different loadings, which are originated by a hydrostatic pressure and a weight of a LNG, a temperature difference, a weight of the prestressed concrete and a boil-off gas pressure. The computed FEM results indicate that the PC outer tank with a storage capacity of 200,000$m^3$ has a good strength safety for a leaked LNG from the membrane inner tank, but the increased cryogenic loadings in which are originated by a leaked LNG decreases the strength safety of the PC structure. This may lead to the collapse of the outer storage tank.

  • Design parameters which used to analyze the stress distribution on the tank wall were defined to develop the propellant tank and obtain optimal values. 1/4 modeling of total tank was selected to calculate the stress distribution with respect to the variation of the support lug location and the tank wall thickness and 1/2 modeling was selected for the stress distributions with respect to the variation of fuel outlet location. Actually, 350psi was applied as static load and 12 gravity as a dynamic load during launching on the internal tank wall. The structural analysis was done with respect to attaching condition of the tank in the satellite. Also the effect of the variation of the propellant outlet location from $0^{\cire}$ to $25^{\cire}$ on the stress distribution was investigated. The equivalent stress distribution and optimal parameters induced from analysis results of the each condition will be used as the fundamental data to design the propellant tank.

  • The sizes of cryogenic vessels and storage tanks are becoming bigger due to strong demands from semiconductor and LCD industry as well as high-tech electronic industry. Conventional level and pressure gauges used for cryogenic vessels were analog types which made exact measurement difficult for the remained quantity at lower levels due to their poor accuracy. In this study, a design for a digital type gas level gauge which can measure the pressure and level inside of the cryogenic liquefied gas storage tanks has been proposed by using a differential pressure sensor, in which the measured data are monitored by a host PC and are transferred to a mobile printer for data confirmation at local station.

  • The study focused on the flow-supply characteristics of the liquid oxidizer $N_2O$ reserved in a tank without any pressurization devices. It was taken accounted that the change of material properties to temperature in the oxidizer tank and the discharge coefficients of both liquid and gas for more precise prediction of the supply mass-flow rate of $N_2O$ oxidizer. To validate the prediction model derived in the study, the experiments were conducted and compare with the theoretical results.

  • In this research, we investigated the hydrogen-gas filling characteristics of ultra-light composite tanks that have a plastic or aluminum liner inside the composite shell. The study was performed for different gas and tank temperatures. The temperature changes at various positions in the Type-4 tank during hydrogen-gas filling were monitored in order to understand the effects of the filling conditions. The results were compared with those obtained for a Type-3 tank. As the filling speed was increased, a quicker temperature rise was observed, and the temperature distribution over the entire region showed significant discrepancies.

  • This paper presents the finite element analysis on the strength safety of a full containment LNG storage tank system with damping safety structures. For the FEM analysis of the inner tank, the combined loads in which are related to a hydrostatic pressure, a cryogenic temperature load, BOG pressure, LNG weight, and a sinking force at the comer of the inner tank have been applied to the inner tank structure. The FEM computed results show that the conventional inner tank is safe for the given combined loads, but the damping safety structure such as compressive springs may be more useful structures to increase the safety of the tank system. The increased stiffness and the appropriate position of the springs are very important design parameters for increasing the damping strength safety of the tank system.

  • Storage tanks of Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) carriers utilized for the purpose of carbon capture and storage (CCS) into subsea strata have to undergo a pre-cooling session before beginning to load cryogenic liquid cargos in order to prevent physical and thermal deterioration of tanks which may result from cryogenic $CO_2$ contacting tank walls directly. In this study we propose dynamic model to calculate the tank inflow of $CO_2$ gas injected for precooling process and its dynamic simulation results under proportional-integral control algorithm. We selected two cases in which each of them had one controlled variable (CV) as either the tank pressure or the tank temperature and discussed the results of that decision-making on the pre-cooling process. As a result we demonstrated that the controlling instability arising from nonlinearity and singularity of the mathematical model could be avoided by choosing tank pressure as CV instead of tank temperature.
