  • Pressurized oxy-fuel combustion is a promising technology for $CO_2$ capture with a benefit of improving power plant efficiency compared with atmospheric oxy-fuel combustion. Prior to $CO_2$ compression in this process, a flue gas condenser (FGC) is used to remove $H_2O$ while recovering the latent heat. At the same time, the FGC has a potential for high-efficiency removal of $SO_x$ and $NO_x$ by exploiting their good solubility in water. In this study, experiments were carried out in a lab-scale, direct contact FGC under different pressures varying between 1 and 20 bar to evaluate the removal efficiency of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ for individual gases and their mixture. In the tests for individual gases, 20% and 76% of $NO_x$ was removed at 1 bar and 10 bar, respectively. Even higher removal efficiencies were achieved for $SO_2$, and also these were maintained for longer as the pressure increased. In the tests for $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ mixture, the removal efficiency of $NO_x$ increased from 13% at 1 bar to 56% at 20 bar because of higher solubility at elevated pressures. $SO_2$ in the mixture was initially dissolved almost completely and then increased by 1,219 ppm at 1 bar and by 165 ppm at 20 bar. Overall, the removal efficiency of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ was increased at elevated pressures, but it was lower in the mixture compared with individual gases at identical conditions because of a lower pH and associated chemical reactions in water.

  • The effectiveness of two passive control techniques for alleviating the pressure oscillation generated in a supersonic cavity flow is investigated numerically. The passive devices suggested in the present research include a triangular bump and a sub-cavity installed near the upstream edge of a rectangular cavity. The supersonic cavity flow characteristics are examined by using the three-dimensional, unsteady Wavier-Stokes computation based on a finite volume scheme. Large eddy simulation (LES) is carried out to properly predict the turbulent features of cavity flow. The results show that the pressure oscillation near the downstream edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations. Such an oscillation is attenuated more considerably using the sub-cavity compared with other methods, and a larger sub-cavity leads to better control performance.

  • The effectiveness of passive control techniques for reducing the pressure oscillation generated in a supersonic cavity flow was investigated numerically and experimentally, respectively. The control device includes a sub-cavity installed in the upstream edge of a rectangular cavity. Time-dependent supersonic cavity flow characteristics with turbulent features were examined by using the three-dimensional, mass-averaged Navier-Stokes computation based on a finite volume scheme and large eddy simulation. The results show that the pressure oscillation near the trailing edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations. Such an oscillation can be attenuated more significantly in the presence of the sub-cavity compared with the cavity without sub-cavity, and a larger sub-cavity leads to better control performance.

  • This study describes the characteristics of distribution of lift-force acting under pier deck through physical experiment. The shape of peak wave pressure was sharp when compressed air existed but was not sharp without that. Values of lift-force was different between edge point and center point in the same block. Distribution of lift-force was expressed differently owing to dimensionless of deck length (l/L), wave steepness (H/L), clearance height per wave height (D/H). The dimensionless factor of D/H affected on the lift-force the clearance between still water surface and decks. This decided the maximum of lift-force. In the case of the same values of D/H, the lift-force are changed by the wave steepness (H/L). Because (D/H) become smaller as the wave steepness (H/L) is increased the height of decks must be decided with the condition which don't have the clearance with $D_{max}$ for the stable design of deck of pier. Effect of reducing lift force was greater in the on-shore than the off-shore according to compressed air existence. This researches points out that design of deck should retain compressed air in order to reduce wave lift force.

  • Stratified charge has been thought as one of the ways to avoid a sharp pressure rise on HCCI combustion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR on HCCI combustion. The pre-mixture with thermal, mixing and EGR stratifications is charged in Rapid Compression Machine. After that, the pre-mixture is compressed and in that process, in-cylinder gas pressure and temperature are analyzed. Additionally numerical calculation with multi-zones modeling is run to know the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR.

  • This paper deals with pressure ripple and noise reduction characteristics for a hydrostatic transmission(HST) consisting of a variable axial piston pump connected in an open loop to a fixed displacement axial piston motor. Pressure ripples in HST is major source of vibration, which can lead to fatigue failure of components and cause noise. In order to reduce the pressure ripple, an annular tube type hydraulic filter proposes to absorb pressure ripples with the high frequencies components to achieve better noise attenuation in HST. The basic principle tube is applied to propagation of pressure wave, reflection, absorption in cross section of discontinuity and resonance in the hydraulic pipeline. It is experimently confirmed that a hydraulic filter is absorbed to be about 30∼40dB of pressure ripple with high frequencies. These results will assist in modeling and design of noise reduction in hydraulic control systems, and here, should provide a means of designing a quieter HST.

  • As Construction & Demolition(C&D) debris increase every year, a system has enforced for recycled aggregate made out of C&D debris, then recycled aggregate usage increased in construction field. But as environmental problem by alkalinity of recycled aggregate occurred, the study for lowering alkalinity of recycled aggregate is needed. In this study we made alkalinity reducing facility and installed in the C&D debris midterm-treat field. Then we certified effect of lowering alkalinity and quality of recycled aggregates before and after carbonation. As a result, the most effective carbonation condition is 30seconds in carbonation time, -50~100 kPa of reaction pressure with change of 3cycles. This condition made pH 9.33~9.8 of recycled aggregate possible. The quality of recycled aggregate after carbonation was better than before carbonation in terms of plasticity index, modified CBR, abrasion loss, sand equivalent, liquid limit, size distribution, density and water absorption.

  • The perfluorocompounds (PFCs) emitted from the semiconductor and display manufacture is treated by abatement systems which use various technologies, such as combustion, thermal, plasma, catalyst. However, it is required that the system should overcome their drawbacks with excess energy consumption and low removal efficiency. The new technology using combination of pressure swing adsorption and excess enthalpy combustion for the reduction of PFCs emissions were developed and analyzed its characteristics. PFCs concentration ratio and PFCs loss factor were calculated from measuring concentration of PFCs at the calculated by comparing concentration of PFCs at the combustor's inlet and outlet. There were performance evaluations with various gas flow for comparing energy consumption and removal efficiency with existing equipments. The concentration ratio and the loss factor of PFCs were 1.65, 8.2%, respectively, when the total gas flow of the pressure swing absorption (PSA) inlet was 204 liter per minute (LPM) and $CF_4$ concentration was 1412 ppm. In comparison with existing system at constant condition, $CF_4$ removal efficiency for a porous media combustion (PMC) showed the improvement more than 16% and the consumed energy was also reduced up to approximately 41%. Then, the total gas flow introduced into PMC and $CF_4$ concentration were 91-LPM and 2335 ppm, respectively, and the destruction and removal efficiency of $CF_4$ was about 96% at 19-LPM $CH_4$, and 40-LPM $O_2$.

  • Fluctuating wall pressures were measured using an array of 16 piezoelectric transducers beneath a turbulent boundary layer. The coating used in this experiment was an open-cell, urethane-type foam with a porosity of approximately 50 ppi. The ultimate objective of the coating is to provide a mechanical filter to reduce the wall pressure fluctuations. The boundary layer on the flat plate was measured by using a hot wire probe, and the CPM method was used to determine the skin friction coefficient. The wall pressure autospectra and streamwise wavenumber-frequency spectra were compared to assess the attenuation of the wall pressure field by the coating. The coating is shown to attenuate the convective wall pressure energy. However, the relatively rough surface of the coating in this investigation resulted in a higher mean wall shear stress, thicker boundary layer, and higher low-frequency wall pressure spectral levels compared to a smooth wall.
