  • In order to know the similarity of the electrophoretic protein patterns, distributional aspects of the frequency in each protein band, differences of protein patterns between female and male, and the number of the total protein bands of each variety in the haemolymph of the silkworm pupae according to their geographical origin, the silkworm varieties, and both the sexes, variable electrophoretic protein patterns were observed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, using the silkworm strains which have been reared in the sericultural experiment station. 1. The total number of electrophoretic protein bands classified were twenty-eight, and nearly fourteen bands were shown by each variety on an average. 2. According to their geographical origin, the mean values of the similarity were 20.0%, 28.3% and 14.3% in Japanese, Chinese and European respectively, and the highest similarity was observed between Chinese varieties. 3. The similarity of 129 varieties were tested and it was 22.5%, 23.5% in female and male respectively. 4. The electrophoretic protein patterns in 129 varieties were tested and variation was found in 109 patterns in female and 112 in male. 5. The frequency of the each specified protein band in female and male having variation in protein bands in each variety was found averagely 6.6%. 6. The distribution frequency of the classified 28 protein bands in both the sexes within each geographical origin was variable from 0% to 100%. 7. Among the classified 28 protein bands, HP 11 protein band was found common in all the varieties tested. 8. HP 3 and HP 4 protein bands in female showed high density in electropherograms than in male.

  • The Honam Shear Zone, an important feature in the Phanerozoic geologic history of Korea, has attracted much attention due to its potential tectonic significance. However, little has been known about the displacement amount of the shear zone. Here, we propose a possible displacement marker for the shear zone. The geographic position and peculiar lithology of the Sancheong and Gaya anorthosite bodies in the south-central part of Korea suggest a NE-trending dextral strike slip shear zone that has a displacement of ca. 50 km. This hypothetical shear zone is considered as a part of the Honam Shear Zone since the former has the same trend and shear sense as the latter.

  • This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of advanced spatial modeling techniques for environmental monitoring and impact assessment through a case study of Chernobyl nuclear accident occurred in 1986. Land-cover types changed after the accident are analysed by a post classification comparison method using bi-temporal Landsat TM data acquired in 1986 and 1992 near the accident site. Spatial modeling including various kriging algorithms are also applied to analyze the relationships between Cesium concentrations in soil and thyroid cancer incidence rates in Belarus, which was greatly damaged by the accident. The change detection results clearly showed the decrease of croplands and the increase of abandoned lands, and concrete structures were newly built around the nuclear plant to prevent the spread of radioactive contamination. In Belarus, high Cesium concentrations were observed in southern areas with high thyroid cancer risk estimated by Poisson kriging. Geographically weighted regression, which could account for geographic variations of independent variables including Cesium concentrations and distances from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, was applied to extract the relationships between the independent variables and the thyroid cancer risk. The estimated risk values showed a correlation coefficient value of 0.98 with respect to the thyroid cancer risk values, which implied that the thyroid cancer risk in Belarus was affected by the accident. In conclusion, it is expected that advanced spatial modeling techniques applied in this study would be useful for environmental impact assessment and public health research.

  • Though there are more than 600 active and non-active dimension stone quarries in Korea, most quarries are small-scaled and non-active. Main dimension stone belt in Korea is distributed in the Wonju-jecheon-Mungyeong-Geochang-Jinan-Nanwon-Geogumdo area with NNE direction, which occupies about 50% of domestic dimension stone quarries. The other dimension stone belts occur in the Gangyeong-Iksan-Gimje area, the Pocheon-Ujeongbu area and the Boryeong area. The dimension stones in Korea have been produced from at least fifteen rock types: granite, diorite, syenite, gabbro, homblendite, basalt andesite, rhyolite, tuff felsite, sandstone, marble, gneiss, schist and slate. However, seven or eight rock types such as granite, diorite and marble are currently produced. The dimension stones are quarried out 87% from plutonic rocks (mainly granite and diorite), 6% from sedimentary rocks (mainly sandstone), and 3% from metamorphic rocks (mainly marble). Main rock types of the dimension stones are variable with respect to their production locality. In the Jeollanam-do area, most dimension stones are produced from diorite. Marble is mainly produced from the Gangwon-do and Chungcheongbuk-do areas. Black sandstone is exclusively quarried out from the Chungcheongnam-do area. Granite is most abundant dimension stone in Korea. Above 50% of the domestic dimension stones are medium-grained to coarse-grained granitic rocks, but fine-grained granite dimension stones have 10% of distribution. The color of the dimension stone varies with rock types. Most granite dimension stones have dominant colors of whitish gray and gray, which are produced from the Wonju, Gapyeong, Iksan, Namwon and Geochang areas. Pink-colored granites are rarely produced from the Mungyeong area.

  • When analyzing geographical phenomena, two properties need to be considered. One is the spatial dependence structure and the other is a variation or an uncertainty inhibited in a geographic space. Two problems are encountered due to the properties. Firstly, spatial dependence structure, which is conceptualized as spatial autocorrelation, generates heterogeneous geographic landscape in a spatial process. Secondly, generic statistics, although suitable for dealing with stochastic uncertainty, tacitly ignores location information im plicit in spatial data. GIS is a versatile tool for manipulating locational information, while spatial statistics are suitable for investigating spatial uncertainty. Therefore, integrating spatial statistics to GIS is considered as a plausible strategy for appropriately understanding geographic phenomena of interest. Geographic hot-spot analysis is a key tool for identifying abnormal locations in many domains (e.g., criminology, epidemiology, etc.) and is one of the most prominent applications by utilizing the integration strategy. The article aims at reviewing spatial statistical perspective for analyzing spatial processes in the framework of GIS by carrying out empirical analysis. Illustrated is the analysis procedure of using spatial scan statistic for detecting clusters in the framework of GIS. The empirical analysis targets for identifying spatial clusters of breast cancer incidents in Erie and Niagara counties, New York.
