Dissolution rate of minerals may differ from climates configuration, but weathering rate of feldspars is generally proved to be relatively higher The result of geochemical reaction modeling indicates the acid water of pH 4.5 excluding any other variables, was 2.3 times higher than that in ordinary rain of pH 5.7. This result proved that pH is very important factor in preservation of granite cultural properties. To prevent the weathering of stone cultural properties, weathering characteristics of stones should be studied first and constitution of dry environments, using water repellent or oil coating, isolating water which cause chemical weathering reaction like hydration and oxidization should be considered. Considering the long-term reactions between granite and rain, selection of materials, which can bring neutralization and non-oxidization conditions, are very important in using cleaning agents and biological controls.

Because the stone cultural properties located outdoors, they have been altered and deteriorated in external appearance due to environmental factors. Damage to stone cultural properties is accelerated particularly due to recent industrial development and environmental pollution. When fresh granite was dipped into the seawater, the mineral compositions(Ca, K) of the granite surface were lower then those of the fresh granite and density of the weathered granite was steadily decreased from $2.600 g/cm^3$ to $2.580-2.582 g/cm^3$. Also, absorption capacity of the weathered granite was steadily increased from 0.392% to $0.526{\sim}0.616%$. In the case of $TiO_2$ was coated to the granite, the change of density and absorption ratio of $TiO_2$ coated granite were decreased. Therefore, the $TiO_2$ coating considered to be a viable method to assist in the conservation of stone cultural properties from environmental contaminants.

In order to reveal formation factors and developmental processes of tafoni this study was conducted with petrological analysis including microscopic observation, measurement of water content and water analysis at Golgulsa temple in Gyeongju, South Korea. The direction of the entrance to tafoni at Golgulsa temple tends to coincide with the direction of slope, and this is thought to be related to the direction of wind flow and water supply. Tafoni's initial developmental processes is judged to have grown as a result of a breakaway of rock fragments along with beddings and cracks in rock. Then, tafoni have been enlarged along at the spots that sufficiently accommodate water supply depending on the direction of wind. The results of water analysis of the stagnant water in gnamma implies that a high meltage of Na and Cl compared to other inland areas can be from the adjacent shore. The effects of such saline substances on rock weathering and development of taponi are currently under way through electronic microscopy and geochemical analysis.
Freezing and thawing cycle is one of the major weathering-induced factors in the mechanical weathering of the rock mass. This natural process accelerates rock weathering process by breaking down the parent rock materials and makes soil or weathered rock formation in a rock slope surface zone. It can also cause reduction of the shear strength in slopes. It is important to calculate the deterioration depth caused by freezing-thawing for a slope stability analysis. In this study, deterioration depths of rock slope due to freezing-thawing were calculated using the 1-D heat conductivity equation. The temperature distribution analysis was also carried out using collected temperature distribution data for last five years of several major cities in Korea. The analysis was performed based on the distributed rock types in study areas. Thermal conductivities, specific heats and densities of the calculation rocks are tested in the laboratory. They are thermal properties of rocks as input parameters for calculating deterioration depths. Finally, the paper is showing the calculated deterioration depths of each rock type slopes in several major cities of Korea.

Magai Wareiishi Jizo (Buddhist statue carved on rock surface) is close to shoreline and a part of rock block is periodically immersed by seawater. Rock material of the Wareiishi-jizo statue is composed mainly of medium or coarse-grained biotite granite and very durable. However, physical properties of the rock have been changed according to the complex interactions of the salt solution and surrounding environment. Exfoliation of the rock surface is a serious condition by salt crystallization. Exfoliation (14.6%) is concentrated on the upper part of the rock block with mainly boundary of seawater as the center. On the other hand, lower part of the rock block show black layers by contaminants deposition. In addition, brown discoloration and biological contaminants is overlapped. Rock surface show high discoloration rate of 50.5% (black discoloration, 29.2% > yellow discoloration, 14.1% > brown discoloration, 4.4% > green discoloration, 2.9%). Upper part of the rock block had a lot of change in the physical properties than lower part that is immersed by seawater. In particular, surface properties of the rock block was very weak state at the boundary surface of seawater permeation.
The artificial rains having different pH and weathering simulation test were performed for Gyeongju Namsan granite and dacitic tuff to predict the role of acid rain in the deterioration of stone monuments located in Gyeongju area. The pH 4.0 rain reacted with the fresh granite showed near neutral pH at the early stage due to the hydrolysis of minerals in the rock surface. But the pH changed back to the initial pH in the later stage. On the other hand, the pH 5.6 rain showed the neutral pH for a longer time than the experiment with pH 4.0 rain, reflecting slower reaction of minerals due to the weaker acidity. When the pH 5.6 rain reacted with the weathered granite, the water showed neutral pH longer than the case of the fresh granite. The similar tendencies were observed in the experiment of dacitic tuff, except that the pH 4.0 rain reacted with dacitic tuff took a longer time to go back to the initial pH as compared with the case of granite. These results may due to the differences in mineral composition and texture of two rocks. Dacitic tuff contains more fine-grained or glassy groundmass than granite and is more reactive with weaker acid rain. It was predicted that the weight loss and strength decrease rate of dacitic tuff would be approximatetly twice relative to those of granite in the same experimental environment.
Imha lake has a high turbid water which keeps up during a few months, as comparing to other dams. Origins of the high turbid water derive from suspended materials which compose of micro particles of clay and rock-forming minerals. They are the weathered products from surface rocks that relate with particular geology in drainage field of the Imha dim. Accordingly we have fundamentally surveyed the kinds, properties, distribution and structures of general geology, found a few particular geology that source clay materials, and traced the passage that their weathered products enter the dam. We have suggested the basic origins of increase in turbid degree from detecting kinds and behavior of the suspended materials cause high turbid water in the Imha lake.

This study was to assess the effect of consolidation for intension measures of stone cultural heritage using artificially weathered stones. We have prepared four kinds of stones (Gyeongju Namsan Granite, Iksan Granite, Yeongyang Sandstone, Jeongseon Marble), and manufactured fresh, weathered and highly weathered stone samples by thermal shock for each rock type. The samples were treated with three consolidants (Wacker OH 100, Remmers KSE 300, 1T1G) by three methods {immersion, capillary rise (partial immersion), spray}, and tested for weight, porosity, ultrasonic velocity, Equotip hardness and color before and after treatment. As a result, the effect of consolidation was widely influenced by porosity and treatment methods. Wacker OH 100 was shown the highest consolidation effect in almost every stone sample.
This study is investigated for the trace element concentration in the soils derived from different parent rocks, which are serpentinites, metamorphic rocks and black shales, and the absorption of the trace element by Pinus rigida in Hongseong and Keumsan, Chungnam, respectively. The concentrations of nickel, chrominium and cobalt are high in the serpentinites, whereas the concentrations of zinc, molybdenium and iron are high in the metamorphic rocks. These elements in black shale are lower than those in serpentinites and metamorphic rocks. The serpentine soils show high nickel, chrominium and cobalt content, while zinc and iron content are high in the mixed soils(serpentinites + metamorphic rocks) and black shales. Comparing with parent rocks, all of trace elements in their weathered soils are low. The pH of serpentine soil is high, 7.73~9.55 and that of black shale soil in 5.61. In serpentine area, the absorptions of chrominium by P. rigida is lower than its in the soils. The absorption of zinc by P. rigida is high relative to zinc concentration in soils. The Co/Ni and Fe/Ni quotient in P. rigida over serpentine soils are considerably lower than those growing over other soils tpes.
About 17% of historical properties in Korea were made of stones and most of them are exposed to weathering, as such that discoloring, cracking, and shattering occur from physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological effects due to outdoor placement. Proper treatments for conservation are necessary to prevent the weathering damage and to retain the original shape of stones. MMA, an acrylic monomer having low viscosity can be impregnated deep inside stones by consecutive compression and decompression process in a pressurized vessel. After the polymerization of MMA impregnate, the space inside of the stone was filled with PMMA. It is expected that water repellent and weather resistant properties will be improved because of the improved bonding of constituent materials in stones. In this study, moisture absorption, chemical resistance, and mechanical property of two domestic granites were examined after treating them with MMA for the purpose of determining the conservation value of this method that was possibly useful to the conservation of stone cultural assets.
