Existence of core stone at the inside of the Rock mass is reacting as unstable element. In particular, in case of the cut slope, even when it is not exposed, slope's discontinuity increases or strength level decreases depending on the difference in the weathering grade when it comes to the core stone, and reacts as an important element of the slope movement such as slope's rock fall or collapse. As for the slope that is subject to study, incision was completed after 20 years or so, and parts of the slope reinforcement was completed, but frequent rock fall occurs despite small amount of rainfall, and permanent stability measures are urgent. Refractional seismic survey and geological survey results were compared and analyzed, and reliability was improved by complementing the two survey methods, and stereo-graphic projection using DIPS program was conducted to analyze the characteristics of oore stone in the weathered soil slope.
This paper presents the results of plate loading test and discontinuum analysis, carried out to study the deformation behaviour and determine the deformation modulus of !rletamorphic andesitic tuff found at the site of a underground oil storage facility in Korea. In the plate loading test, the maximum pressure of 14MPa was applied to the bedrock by using a flat jack(1m in diameter) and the rock anchor system for the reaction against the applied pressure. The values of deformation modulus obtained from this test were compared with those of laboratory test, biaxial test and pressuremeter test. The deformation modulus from plate loading test was generally about half of the intact rock modulus, and the mass modulus of the bedrock at the test site may be affected by discontinuities and ranges between 25 and 350pa. Discontinuum analysis was also performed to simulate plate loading test and study the influence of discontinuities on the deformability of rock mass by simulating the presence of joints at the test area.
An algebraic algorithm for predicting the joint trace distribution on the cut-face of rock slope based on the orientations and the locations of joints investigated in the borehole has been developed. Joint trace prediction is manipulated by utilizing the three dimensional plane equations of both joint planes and projection face, and the extent of trace within the projection area is calculated by considering the persistence of each joint plane. Joint trace prediction method is efficiently applied for analyzing the stability and the adequacy of support design of Gimhae Naesam cut-slope, which is structurally unstable due to slumping. Structural characteristics of rock mass is investigated by performing DOM drilling and the potential rock mass sliding inside slope face is analyzed by examining the orientations of joint planes which can induce the slope failure. Also, the efficiency of anchor support design is evaluated by considering the joint trace distribution on the anchor installation area and its sliding potential.
The KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) is a research tunnel which is located in KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) site. At KURT, researches on engineering and natural barrier system, which are the most important components for geological disposal system for high level radioactive waste, have been conducted. In this study, we synthesized the site characteristics obtained by various types of site investigation to introduce the geological model for KURT site, and induced the 3-D hydrogeological model for KURT site from the geological model. From the geological investigation at the surface and boreholes, four geological elements such as subsurface weathered zone, upper fractured rock, lower fractured rock and fracture zones were determined for the geological model. In addition, the geometries of these geological elements were also analyzed for the geological model to be three-dimensional. The results from 3-D geological model were used to construct the hydro-geological model for KURT site, which is one of the input data for groundwater flow modeling and safety assessment.
This study reports the influence of vocid geometry on fracture closure and permeability from numerical experiments. As the aperture distributions of rock fractures are characterized by statistical methods, synthetic fractures have successfully been simulated in this way. Based on the generated fracture models, models for fracture closure and flow calculation have been developed. A fracture closure model has been developed by considering the asperity compression and half-space deformation, and flow calculations have been performed using a finite difference method adopting a local cubic law. The results of numerical experiments have shown that the increase in the aperture spatial correlation leads the fracture closure and the decrease in fracture permeability to increase. Also, it has been indicated that there is an implicit relation between fracture normal stiffness and permeability. The importance of this study is to enhance the understanding the hydro-mechanical behavior of fractured rock massed due to engineering projects.
Analysis of slope behavior concerning the structural characteristics of field rock mass can be processed by virtue of borehole information of joint orientation and position acquired from DOM drilled core. Anticipated sliding potential of pre-failed rock slope is analyzed and the regional slope instability is investigated by inspecting the hazardous joints and blocks the traces of which is projected on the cut-face. Cross section has been set at the center of rock slope and the traces of both joints and tetrahedral blocks, which potentially can induce the slope failure, are drawn to investigate the failure modes and the triggering mechanism. Automated monitoring system has been established to measure the slope movement and especially, inclinometer has been installed inside DOM borehole to analyze the slope movement by considering the internal rock structure. Algorithms for predicting the slope failure time have been reviewed and the significance of heavy rainfall on the slope behavior has been investigated.

In tunnels, safety factor concept has been suggested to estimate their stability quantitatively. It is merely limited in the framework of mechanical analysis. However safety factor concept has not been applied in hydro-mechanical coupled analyses due to their modelling complexity. Recently studies on this topic are being actively made. In this study, induced drainage modelling methods for hydro-mechanical coupled analyses are compared and analyzed to estimate safety factor of a subsea tunnel exactly. To this end, methods both controlling hydraulic characteristic of shotcrete and using a drainage well are considered. Sensitivity analysis were carried out on rock class, thickness of shotcrete, and hydraulic properties of rock mass. As the results of this study, it turned out that the induced drainage modelling using a drainage well would give more reliable results than that of controlling hydraulic characteristic of shotcrete in estimating tunnel stability in hydro-mechanical coupled analyses.
This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and mechanical anisotropy of granite distributed in the Nam-weon on the subject of weathered rock mass sea water surroundings. Artificial weathering test is defined as a test, which controls the weathering rate and agents by controlling the weathering rate and agents by artificial environmental of salt water. Increased weathering degree is large indicated by weathering salt water, such as apparent specific gravity, absorption, porosity, uniaxial compression strength, P-wave velocity, slake durability, shore hardness, indirect tensile strength(brazilian test) and cohesion were measured. As the Weathering salt water proceeds, cracks develope increasingly. A number the cracks affect the rock deformation. Therefore, stress-strain curve of weathered salt water rock in one confined state are quite differ from weathered fresh water rock those. A reason of their deformation type is the formation of micro-cracks and potential porosity caused by artificial weathering test.

Many Studies of tunnel and tunnelling safety have been developed continuously based on the increasing social interests in underground space since 1990's in Korea. Because the growth of population in metropolitan has been accelerated at a faster pace than the development of the cities, underground facilities have been created as a great extent in view of less land space available. In this study, a lot of types of tunnel failure were surveyed and the detail causes were studied after many cases of tunnel failure were collected. There were suggested brief countermeasure of tunnel failure through case study. An expert system was developed to predict the safety of tunnel and choose proper tunnel reinforcement system using fuzzy quantification theory and fuzzy inference rule based on tunnel information database. The comparison result between the predicted reinforcement system level and measured ones was very similar. In-situ data were obtained in three tunnel sites including subway tunnel under Han river. This system will be very helpful to make the most of in-situ data and suggest proper applicability of tunnel reinforcement system developing more resonable tunnel support method from dependance of some experienced experts for the absent of guide.
The development of proper joint model, which can describe real phenomena exactly and still can be used easily, is one of the most important element for the analysis of the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of discontinuous rock mass. In this study, an elasto-plastic constitutive model of joint behavior considering asperity degradation was extended with the concept of first and second order asperities. The proposed model was implemented to numerical code with discrete finite joint element. The parametric study with the various asperity angles and degradation coefficients showed that the model can reproduce the shear behavior of typical rough joints well. Results of laboratory monotonic and cyclic shear tests were compared with those of numerical tests to validate the model. The hydraulic model considering the relations between gouge production and aperture was introduced to the mechanical mode1. In an attempt to examine the performance of the model, comparative numerical test was conducted. Permeability between joint surfaces increased rapidly at the first stage, but became nearly constant with increasing shear displacement due to gouge production and uniform variation of aperture distribution.
