Time-dependent behavior is a basic mechanical property of rocks. Predicting the failure time of rock structures by analyzing the time-dependent characteristic is important and problematic. It is tried to predict the failure time of tunnel, slope & laboratory creep test specimen from measured displacement(or strain) and rate with relationship suggested by Voight($\ddot{\Omega}=A\dot{\Omega}^\alpha$, where $\Omega$ is a measurable quantity such as strain & displacement and A & $\alpha$ are constants). A & $\alpha$ are estimated through applying the nonlinear least square method to the single and double integrated Voight's equations and utilized to predict the failure time. Predicted failure time is in accordance with real one except minor error. Linear inverse rate method applied to creep strain and rate yields a poor linear correlation of data and precision of predicted failure time is not better than methods using strain and rate.
This paper presents the results of plate loading test and discontinuum analysis, carried out to study the deformation behaviour and determine the deformation modulus of !rletamorphic andesitic tuff found at the site of a underground oil storage facility in Korea. In the plate loading test, the maximum pressure of 14MPa was applied to the bedrock by using a flat jack(1m in diameter) and the rock anchor system for the reaction against the applied pressure. The values of deformation modulus obtained from this test were compared with those of laboratory test, biaxial test and pressuremeter test. The deformation modulus from plate loading test was generally about half of the intact rock modulus, and the mass modulus of the bedrock at the test site may be affected by discontinuities and ranges between 25 and 350pa. Discontinuum analysis was also performed to simulate plate loading test and study the influence of discontinuities on the deformability of rock mass by simulating the presence of joints at the test area.

Squeezing is a phenomenon that may occur in deep tunneling and could bring about a large plastic deformation, tunnel closure and collapse of tunnel supports. Therefore, quantitative estimations of deformation and stress from squeezing and its possibility are necessary for establishment of a rational tunneling method. This study carried out three dimensional numerical analyses using a strain softening model in order to simulate the behaviour of squeezing and to estimate deformation and yield area around tunnels quantitatively. Numerical analyses were performed for 42 cases of various stress and strength conditions. As a result, the maximum tangential stress and strength of rock mass ratio could estimate plastic deformation and yield depth around tunnels and equations of relations between them were proposed.

Elastic modulus in rockmass is an important factor to represent the characteristic of rock deformation and is used to estimate the displacement due to tunnel excavation. Nevertheless, the study to estimate the elastic modulus, which condisiders the rock type and joint characteristics (joint shear strength and joint inclination angle), has been done in less frequency. Accordingly, this study is aimed at providing the method to estimate the elastic modulus of rockmass in the various rock and joint conditons and the results grasped from the study. For this purpose, the 2D discrete numerical analysis will be carried out and the displacements due to tunnel excavation will be investigated with the consideration of rock and joint conditions. Then the displacement results will be used to estimate the elastic modulus of rockmass in which rock and joint conditions are considered with the utilization of the elastic theory of circular tunnel. The results of elastic modulus, which considers the conditions of various rock and joint, would be expected to have a great practical use in field.
The quantitative analyses and the mechanical interpretation of discontinuity planes are the most important factor for the study of strength and deformation properties of rock masses containing discontinuity planes. However, the relationship between the factors investigated in the field and the actual mechanical properties of discontinuity planes is not fully understood. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of density, length, and spacing of joints on elastic modulus of rock masses as these values vary. A new parameter which has a direct relation with the elastic modulus of discontinuity planes is also preposed in this study. The combination of finite element methods and homogenization methods has been used for the numerical analyses of a uintcell with discontinuity planes, which is generated using random-number generation methods. The elastic modulus of the discontinuity plane is found from the numerical analyses. The final results propose not only the relation between the investigation parameters of discontinuity planes and the elastic modulus of rock masses but also a new parameter, an effect area ratio having a linear relation with the elastic modulus of rock masses.
In order to dispose radioactive wastes safely, it is needed to understand the mechanical, thermal, fluid behavior of rockmass and physico-chemical interactions between rockmass and water. Also, the knowledge about mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks is required to predict and to model many conditions of geological structure, underground in-situ stress, folding, hot water interaction, intrusion of magma, plate tectonics etc. This study is based on researches about rock mechanics issues associated with a waste disposal in deep rockmass. This paper includes the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of rocks in varying temperature conditions, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling analysis in rock mass and deformation behavior of discontinuous rocks. The mechanical properties were measured with Interaken rock mechanics testing systems and hydraulic properties were measured with transient pulse permeability measuring systems. In all results, rock properties were sensitive to temperature variation.
The world's largest nucleon decay experiment facility is constructed at a depth of approximately 1,000meters, in the Kamioka mine, Japan. Because of the character as a large cavern in deep underground, in-situ stress measurements were conducted to provide basic information for design of the cavern. Three overcoring methods were used: 8-element embedding gauges developed by Japanese Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry, hemispherical ended borehole technique with eight strain cross-gauges, and Hollow Inclusion Cell with 12 strain gauges. The principle stresses were not perfectly similar in each measurement. The average values of the 6 stress element were used to provide the direction and the magnitude of three principle stress.
A total of 22 sites around openings of limestone mine are chosen to assess rock mass classification schemes such as RMR, Q-system, and GSI. RMR and Q are modified to estimate the relationship with GSI. Q' is the modified Q with SRF=1.0 and $J_w=1.0$. Rock mass is assumed to be completely dry and very favorable discontinuity orientations are assumed to estimate ${RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$. Relationships of Q-Basic RMR, Q-Total RMR, ${GSI-RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$, and GSI-Q' are analyzed, in which a correlation of ${GSI-RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$ is found to be the highest. Failure strains are calculated using the modulus ratios and most measuring sites appear to be stable with low failure strain class.
Various measurements were carried out to estimate the modulus of deformation in two dominant rock types in Korea: granite and gneiss. Four most commonly used methods were utilized: Goodman jack tests, PS well logging, laboratory ultrasonic tests and laboratory uniaxial loading tests. Laboratory static and dynamic Young's moduli depend on the magnitude of the applied axial stress, range of Sequency used for measurement and the loading/unloading condition. As the laboratory measurement condition approaches to that in situ, the resultant moduli also appear to be comparable to that in situ. This suggests that the simulation of in situ stress condition is important when the modulus of rock is determined in the laboratory Dynamic Young's modulus is generally higher than static Young's modulus because of (micro)crack behavior in response to the stress, different range of frequency used for measurements, and the effect of the amplitude of deformation. Understanding of the relations in moduli from different measurement methods will help estimate appropriate in situ values.
This paper presents two new extensions to the DDA method. The extensions consist of sequential loading or unloading and rock reinforcement by rockbolts, shotcrete or concrete lining. Examples of application of the DDA method with the new extensions are presented. Simulations of the underground excavation of the Unju Tunnel of Kyungbu High Speed Railway Project in Korea were carried out to evaluate the influence of excavation sequence and reinforcement on the tunnel stability. The results of the present study indicate that improper selection of excavation sequence could have a destabilizing effect on the tunnel stability. On the other hand, reinforcement by rockbolts and shotcrete can stabilize the tunnel. It is found that, in general, the DDA program with the three new extensions can now be used as d practical tool in the design of underground structures. In particular, phases of construction (excavation, reinforcement) can now be simulated more realistically.
