  • Using a natural gradient tracer test, the characteristics of hydrodynamic dispersion according to each depth of a fractured rock were studied, and the effective porosity and longitudinal dispersivity of the fractured rock were estimated. The difference of vertical hydrodynamic dispersion was identified by concentration breakthrough curves linear regression analyses of bromide concentrations according to depths versus time, and hydraulic fracture characteristics at two intervals of the monitoring well. Higher concentration and faster arrival time at GL- 18 m depth (RQD 13%, average joint spacing 2 cm, TCR 100%) than at GL- 25 m depth (RQD 41%, average joint spacing 7 cm, TCR 100%) resulted from shorter distance and more fractures. Tracer was transported through the 1 st fractures until the arrival of its peak concentration and through the 2nd fractures or matrix diffusion after the arrival of its peak concentration. The increase/decrease slopes of bromide concentration versus time were 3.46/-1.57 at GL-18 m depth and 3.l9/-0.47 at GL- 25 m depth of the monitoring well. So the faster bromide transport was confirmed at GL- 18 m depth with more fractures. The concentration increment of bromide was fitted by a Gaussian function and the concentration decrement of bromide was fitted by an exponential function. Effective porosity and longitudinal dispersivity estimated by CATTI code were 10.50% and 0.85 m, respectively.

  • The site selection process for deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste will be conducted in stages, and 103 evaluation parameters related to site selection have been proposed. In the field of rock mechanics and rock engineering, there are 33 evaluation parameters for intact rock, joint and rock mass, and they are applied in the basic and detailed investigation stages. In this report, uniaxial compressive strength, in-situ stress, joint distribution, and rock mass classification were selected as the main evaluation parameters, and among them, uniaxial compressive strength and in situ stress were selected as key evaluation parameters. Statistical techniques or regression analysis were performed for granite in Wonju and Chuncheon to evaluate the distribution range for the selected key evaluation parameters. The average of the uniaxial compressive strength in the Wonju area estimated through the posterior distribution is about 171 MPa, and about 123 MPa in the Chuncheon area. The maximum in situ stress acting in the Wonju area was less than 30 MPa and less than 40 MPa in the Chuncheon area. The direction of the maximum horizontal stress calculated by regression analysis was 101° in Wonju, and in the case of Chuncheon, it was 95°, respectiviely.

  • Rock masses at the site for the $2^{nd}$ step construction of the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) are divided into six units to establish a rock mechanics model that is dependent on the geological characteristics and degree of joint development. The site primarily consists of three granitic units (G1, G2, and G3), two dykes (D1 and D3), and a fault zone of poor rock mass quality (F3). The F3 unit crosses the tunnel at the beginning of the site of $2^{nd}$ step construction. The rock masses of each unit are classified by RMR (Rock Mass Rating), Q-system, and RMi (Rock Mass Index), all based on borehole logging data. The deformation modulus, rock mass strength, cohesion, and friction angle for each unit are calculated using established empirical relationships. The representative rock mass classification and geotechnical parameters for the rock mass units are established, and a rock mechanics model for the site is proposed, which will be useful in the design and stability analysis of the $2^{nd}$ step construction of KURT.

  • The Seosanmaaesamjonbulsang (National Treasure No. 84) consists of light gray and coarse to mediumgrained biotite granite with partly developed pegmatite and quartz vein. The host rock is divided into dozens of rock blocks with various shape along irregular discontinuity plane. The evaluation results of discontinuity systems reveal that the host rock were exposed to instable sloping environments. Results of deterioration diagnosis show that the degree of damage has been made worse by physical weathering and surface discoloration laying stress on part that vertical and horizontal joints are massed. Generally, deterioration rate of the triad Buddha surface cover with 42.7%, however, the rate of physical weathering and surface discoloration are subdivided to 9.6% and 33.1%, respectively. Ultrasonic measurements indicate that the triad Buddha was reached highly weathered grade in general. And the rock material was weaken to show low velocity zone of 1,000m/s along irregular joint systems. Indoor and outdoor mean relative humidity of the shelter was recorded more than 70% during every season, and high frequency appears in high relative humidity range over 95%. Such environments seem to have produced dew condensation on the rock surface with rainfall and supply water, promoted physical, chemical and biological weathering along crack and joint, resulting in high permeation of water and percentage of water content. Therefore, it is judged that for scientific conservation of the triad Buddha it needs environment control through persistent preservation environment monitoring including water problem.

  • Quantification of roughness plays an important role in modeling strength deformability and fluid flow behaviors of rock joints. A procedure was suggested to simulate joint roughness, and characteristics of the roughness was investigated in this study. Stationary fractional Brownian profiles with known input values of the fractal parameter and other profile properties were generated based on random midpoint displacement method. Also, a procedure to simulate three dimensional roughness surface was suggested using the random midpoint displacement method. Selected statistical roughness parameters were calculated for the generated self-affine profiles to investigate the attribute of roughness. Obtained results show that statistical parameters applied in this study were able to consider correlation structure and amplitude of the profiles. However, effect of data density should be tackled to use statistical parameters for roughness quantification.

  • This study was for analysing the sedimentary rock slope stability and providing the reinforcement method that can heighten stability. The study area consists of Cretaceous basalt or basaltic tuff belonging to Hak-Bong Basalt Formation in Ha-Yang Group. Nature of geological structure confirmed in this area ars bedding, joint and fault. Majority of geological structure that affect most relationship rock slope stability is bedding. It is shown that dip direction is 120~160/15~25. In other structure, joint sets are shown that dip direction of set 1 is 310~330/65~85 and set 2 is 230~250/70~85. Joint set 3 shows above 85$^{\circ}$ high angle on NE trend although do not show clear. Stability analysis about rock slope used kinematic analysis, limit equilibrium method and FLAC by numerical analysis method. FLAC is continuum model that use Fintie Defferentce Method, but could use Interfaces Module and get discrete model's analysis effect such as UDEC.

  • Applicability of the digital photogrammetry technique for measurement of rock joint roughness is addressed in this study using the DSLR camera. Measurements of roughness were performed for two rock joint specimens using the laser profiler and the digital photogrammetry technique. The statistical roughness parameters were estimated for two dimensional roughness profiles constructed from each method. Obtained results showed that the statistical roughness parameters estimated from the digital photogrammetry technique were lower than that based on the laser profilometer, even though a high degree of correlation might exist between them. The effects of camera direction on roughness measurements were found to negligible in practice. The digital photogrammetry could be a cost effective method to measure the roughness of rock joints with various scale at the fields.

  • Various analytical, empirical and theoretical methods for slope stability assessment were applied on slopes to develop aggregate quarry optimally. Among them are block theory, stereographic analysis, RMR, SMR, limit equilibrium method and maximum likelihood. Test site was estimated that slopes were apt to fail although rock quality was good. Modified direction and dip angle was suggested for stability. To reduce the overbreak and to improve the stability, the vertical blasting was recommended for new subground level.

  • Jointed rock is often modeled using ubiquitious joint models, anisotropic plasticity models with yield condions that simulate slip along joint sets. In this paper, a ubiquitous joint model is derived for a rock mass cut by two sets of continuous joints. The model is used to compute the bearing capacity of a footing resting on jointed rock. Comparison to a series of Distinct Element simulations with different joint spacings, suggests that ubiquitous joint modles are only appropriate when the joint spacing is small.
