  • The roughness of rock joint is one of the most important parameters in developing the shear resistance and the tendency of dilation. Due to the damage accumulated with shearing displacement, the roughness angle is lowered continuously. It is known that dilation, shear strength hardening, and softening are directly related to the degradation of asperities. Much effort has been directed to incorporate the complicated damage mechanism of asperities into a constitutive model fur rock joints. This study presents an elasto-plastic formulation of joint behavior including elastic deformability, dilatancy and asperity surface damage. It is postulated that the plastic portion of incremental displacement 7an be decomposed into contributions from both sliding along the asperity surface and damage of asperity. Numerical cyclic shear tests are presented to illustrate th? performance of the derived incremental stress-displacement relation. A laboratory cyclic shear test is also simulated. Numerical examples reveal that the elasto-plastic joints model is promising.

  • The roughness of discontinuity significantly influences the mechanical characteristics of rock masses and extensively affects thermal and hydraulic behaviors. In this study, we utilized photogrammetry to generate 3D point cloud data for discontinuity and applied this data to characterize the roughness of discontinuity. The discontinuity profiles, reconstructed from the 3D point cloud data, were compared with those manually measured using a profile gauge. This comparison served to validate the accuracy and reliability of the acquired point cloud data in replicating the actual configurations of rock surfaces. Subsequent to this validation, influence of the number of profiles for representative JRC assessment was further investigated followed by suggestion of roughness anisotropy evaluation method with application of it to actual rock discontinuity surfaces.

  • The large planar failure has occurred in a rock cut slope of highway construction site in Boeun. This area is considered to be unstable since the discontinuity, whose orientation is similar to the orientation of the failure plane, is observed in many areas. Therefore, several analysis techniques such as SMR, stereographic analysis, limit equilibrium, numerical analysis, which are commonly used in rock slope stability analysis, are adopted in this area. In order to analyze the stress redistribution and nonlinear displacement caused by cut, which are not able to be obtained in limit equilibrium method, DEM and shear strength reduction technique were used in this study. Then the factors of safety evaluated by shear strength reduction technique and limit equilibrium were compared. In addition, the factor of safety under fully saturated slope condition was calculated and subsequently, the effect of the reinforcement was evaluated.

  • The uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass is known as the major factor in the assessment of drillability and the optimum excavation design in full-face tunnel excavation by TBM. Referring to worldwide cases, TBM has been applied mostly to the rock mass within the strength range of 80~250 MPa. Recently, a water way tunnel has been constructed as a part of Milyang dam project by TBM within the rock masses where the rock type is mainly granite with some granophyre, hornfels and andesite. Their uniaxial compressive strengths in extended area are estimated higher than 260 MPa. In this paper, the relation between the penetration rate and the rock mass properties is analyzed and TBM application to the very hard rocks is discussed. As a result that three suggestions to predict the TBM net penetration rate are analyzed, NTH method seems a better approach than other methods in the extremely hard rocks. NTH prediction matches with the results of actual values with the variations of 2~20%. Hardness measurement by Schmidt hammer and RMR estimation are carried out along the L = 5.3 km entire TBM tunnel alignment. The net penetration rate measured monthly is shown to be reciprocally proportional to Schmidt rebound hardness and RMR where coefficients of correlation, $R^2$are 0.705 and 0.777 respectively. As a result, they are good quantitative indices for the prediction of TBM net penetration rate in the extremely hard rocks. Magnitude of in-situ stress has a certain effect on TBM performance, and it is required to measure the in-situ stresses in TBM excavation design.

  • This study has for its object to increase an objectivity of the observation result in the face mapping of tunnel and to suggest the reasonable support and reinforcement methods to be considered the rock properties. It was developed in this study to the tunnel stability evaluation system(Prototype NFEST) to be used fuzzy set theory and neuro-fuzzy techniques, and this system was verified according to the reliability evaluation between the 36 learning data and the inferred results. When it summarized the results; (1) 12 evaluation items and ranges were proposed to be modified basis on the RMR which are well known to the domestic workers. (2) It was shown that correlation coefficient(│R│) between $RMR_{inf}$ inferred by 12 items and $RMR_{org}$ due to arithmetic total, $RMR_{chk}$ due to subjective judgement of observer are relatively high relationship with each 0.83 and 0.79. (3) Inferred result of the total tunnel safety shows also a good relationship with $RMR_{inf}$ (│R│=0.7) and the rock weathering(│R│=0.84).

  • Stereophotogrammetry is used to extract spatial information of an interested object by constructing a stereo-image from two or more photos. In this study, the stereophotogrammetry was adopted for a rock joint survey in mine tunnels. The orientations of discontinuities were measured from two mine tunnels with a clinocompass. To evaluate the effect of photographing light level on the stereophotogrammetry analysis, the light intensity was changed within a predefined range for every photograph. Those photographs were analyzed by using a commercial code for stereophotogrammetry - ShapeMetriX 3D, and the results from the analysis were compared with the manual measurement using a clinocompass.

  • Because of the slope failure, not only property damage but also human damage can occur, slope stability analysis should be conducted to predict and reinforce of the slope. This paper, defines the ground areas that can be characterized in terms of slope failure such as Rockmass jointset, Rockmass fault, Soil, Leakage water and Crush zone in sloped images. As a result, it was shown that the deep learning instance segmentation network can be used to recognize and automatically segment the precise shape of the ground region with different characteristics shown in the image. It showed the possibility of supporting the slope mapping work and automatically calculating the ground characteristics information of slopes necessary for decision making such as slope reinforcement.

  • Roughness of a joint surface is one of the most important parameters that affects the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of rock mass. Therefore, various studies on making constitutive model and/or roughness quantification have been conducted in experimental and empirical manners. Advances in recent 3D printing technology can be utilized to generate a joint surface with a specific roughness. In this study, a reliable technique to generate a rough joint surface was introduced and its quantitative assessment was made. Random midpoint displacement method was applied to generate a joint surface and the distribution of $Z_2$ was investigated to assess its roughness. As a result, a certain roughness can be embodied by controlling input parameters and furthermore it was able to generate a joint surface with specific roughness anisotropy.
