  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify communication principles for nurses in cancer units according to Grice's theory. Method: This study was a secondary analysis of qualitative research using conversational analysis. Results: The principles consisted of four maxims: Quality, quantity, relevance and manner and 14 strategies. For the quality maxim, 'asking what you believe to be true' and 'saying the facts you know' strategies were identified. In the quantity maxim, the strategies were 'asking single questions', 'asking open questions' and 'asking optimistic questions'. In the relevance maxim, 'asking about the same theme' and 'giving relevant explanations' strategies were identified. In manner maxim, the strategies were 'using clear expressions in asking questions', 'asking in an orderly way', 'verifying answers', 'using clear expressions in explanations', 'explaining in an orderly way' and 'verifying understanding'. Conclusion: It is expected that these strategies will help and increase the degree of cooperation for nurses in effectively communication with cancer patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to discuss and address the state of the knowledge development and the nature of knowledge regarding fatigue. Method: This study analyzed the 63 fatigue related articles published from 1990 to 2001. The analysis schema was 'Alternative linkages among philosophy, theory, and method for nursing science' (Kim, 1993). Result: The 63 articles had been studied only within 5 types among all 96 types of linkages. Most of the articles (59 among 63 articles) had been studied within scientific realism and deductive logic. Fifty-three articles among 59 articles were the type of explanatory and predictive theory, grasping reality by the etic method on the controlled setting. Conclusion: This study suggests more development of knowledge regarding fatigue with various logics, especially with discovery logic such as inductive and retroductive or methods in multiple designs on various subjects under various philosophy needed for nursing practice.

  • Purpose: This study was to explore the experiences of perioperative patients with cancer. The purpose of this inquiry was to describe the essence of such experiences, and to understand them from the patients' point of view. Method: Participants in this study were 9 cancer patients with ages ranging from 31 to 70 years old, living in B city, who experienced cancer operations. Data collection consisted of in-depth interviews and an observation method done from October to December in 2003. In analysing data, Colaizzi's(1978) phenomenological research method was adopted. Results: Five categories emerged from ten theme clusters. The five categories were: 'shock', 'expectations & wishes', 'despair', 'feelings of burden', 'continual pain'. Conclusion: The results of this study showthat oncology nurses need to pay more attention to the psychosocial aspect of nursing to empathize and support the cancer patients who suffer and its treatment, and operations.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify predictors of quality of life in breast cancer patients. Physical and pscyhological factors like stress, mood, and fatigue with sociodemographic factors like education, income, job and stage of disease were used to predict quality of life. Methods: One hundred eleven patients with breast cancer participated in this study? The functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast(FACT-B) was used to assess quality of life. Results: The mean age of the patients was 46.7 years. The FACT-B mean score was 89.89(SD:17.31) Education, income, job and stage of disease were significantly associated with QOL. In a regression analysis, mood, income, and fatigue were significant predictors for QOL where as, stress was not significant. Among the subscales of QOL, physical well-being, functional well-being, emotional well-being, and the breast cancer subscale were included as predictors of QOL Conclusion: Physical and psychological factors were strong predictors of QOL. These results demonstrate the need for interventions to improve QOL in breast cancer survivors.

  • Purpose: This study explored possible risk factors influencing the development of colorectal cancer by comparing life habits of colorectal cancer patients and healthy adults. Methods: The study was designed as a retrospective comparison survey study of the colorectal cancer patient group and healthy adult group. 107 colorectal cancer patients in a university hospital and 124 healthy adults were recruited from October 2011 to August 2012. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test/t-test and logistic regression with the SPSS program. Results: Consumption of instant food products, lower stress management, burned meats and unhealthy eating habits were shown to be risk factors in development of colorectal cancer. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study comparing colorectal cancer patients and healthy adults, minimizing consumption of instant food products, development of healthy eating habits of consuming more vegetables, cooking meat slightly, and effective management of stress levels are recommended.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the impact of uncertainty degree and uncertainty appraisal on cancer patients resilience. Methods: A sample of 181 patients with cancer was recruited from a hospital in Incheon. Data were collected from May 20 to August 25, 2011. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: The resilience for cancer patients showed a significant relationship with uncertainty degree and uncertainty appraisal. The significant factors influencing resilience were uncertainty degree and uncertainty appraisal, they explained 26.5% of the variance. Conclusion: Patients with cancer were adversely affected by uncertaint which led to a negative effect on resilience. The result suggests that intervention programs to reduce the level of uncertainty among patients could improve the resilience of cancer patients.

Methods: The participants of the study were 118 patients who had been diagnosed with cancer at least more than three months before at a university hospital. Physical activity was measured by IPAQ Korean version (2006), and fatigue by the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Continuous physical activity overall in this study was on average $2,154.03{\pm}2,845.86$ MET, and the overall degree of fatigue of the participants was $4.47{\pm}1.80$. There were significant negative correlations between fatigue and moderate physical activity. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggested that moderate physical activity is effective for improving fatigue in cancer patients.

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine factors affecting cancer preventive behavior in middle-aged people. Method: The research design for this study was a descriptive survey design using convenience sampling. Data collection was done using self-questionnaire with 203 middle-aged people in Seoul and G city. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS Win 20.0 Program. Results: The mean score of cancer preventive behavior was $3.43{\pm}.14$ out of 5. Cancer preventive behavior showed a significantly positive correlation with knowledge about cancer (r=.24, p<.001). In the multiple regression analysis, gender, perceived health status and knowledge about cancer were significant predictors and explained 14.5% of cancer preventive behaviors. Conclusion: Findings of this study allow a comprehensive understanding of cancer preventive behavior and related factors by middle-aged people. However, further study with a larger random sample from various living environment is necessary.

  • Nurses play an important role in patient education, including providing patients with useful and appropriate information. The purpose of this study was to explore what particular types of information were important to women diagnosed with breast cancer. Sixty seven women with breast cancer an outpatient clinic in W Christian Hospital responded to the structured questionnaires developed by the investigator. Interviews and mail surveys were used in this study. The findings in this study showed that six kinds of information needs arose, ranked as the signs and symptoms of recurrence, the possibility of recurrence, the possibility of metastasis, treatment, diet and physical activities in daily living. Marital status, level of education, and level of monthly income were not related to level of informational need. Younger women rather than older women had a greater need to seek information(r=-.471, p<.01). There was a significantly negative relationship between duration of disease and the score on information needs(r=-.32, p<.05). The findings have implications that the opportunity to ask questions and have accurate information on the recurrence should be provided to women with breast cancer.
