  • In this paper, we presented the results of analysis through EEG measurement for the purpose of checking the frequency band of EEG signals that can be used for personal authentication. The measurement status was divided into the open-eye state and the closed-eye state depending on the presence or absence of an optical task. The data measured in the EEG experiments was divided into seven frequency bands : delta waves, theta waves, alpha waves, SMR waves, mid-beta waves, beta waves and gamma waves to identify the frequency band with the smallest power fluctuation over time. In our results, there was no significant difference between the open-eye state and the closed-eye state, and the SMR waves and mid-beta waves related to human concentration had the smallest fluctuation in power over time, and were a highly reproducible frequency band.

  • Emotional expression is universal and emotional state impacts important areas in our life. Until now, analyzing the acquired EEG signals under circumstances caused by invoked feelings and efforts to define their emotional state have been made mainly by psychologists based on the results. But, recently emotion-related information was released by research results that it is possible to identify mental activity through measuring and analyzing the brain EEG signals. So, this study has compared and analyzed emotional expressions of human by using brain waves. To get EEG difference for a particular emotion, we showed specific subject images to the people for changing emotions that peace, joy, sadness and stress, etc. After measured EEG signals were converged into frequence domain by FFT signal process, we have showed EEG changes in emotion as a result of the performance analyzing each respective power spectrum of delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma waves.

  • Generally, among the EEG signal, alpha wave is said to be strongly appeared in stable state and beta wave in active state. And in oriental medicine, it is said that relative long and regular respiration shows stable state rather than short and irregular respiration. In this paper, we tried to find out relation between respiration and EEG in stable state using quantitative parameters such as stable state ratio and equivalent ratio of respiration which was defined to indicate the degree of stable state quantitatively. And we verified our proposal by the real experiment for 20 persons.

  • Recently, the meditation is getting a major concern because of the trend of wellbeing. The various meditation methods are introduced, but, we need to take an appropriate method for himself or herself. Especially, the numbers of meditators who are using meditation music while they are meditating are increasing. Some people say it is helpful, but others don't. Therefore, I have studied the impact of the meditation music in this paper. I have compared between the meditation with the music and without the music by measuring the channels of left and right hemisphere of prefrontal lobe with 14-channel EEG device. For the result, I have found that there are great difference between two experiments.

  • This paper examine how CCT affected to writing task performance and EEG through 24 elementary students from in July to September, 2014. The study analyzed EEG that was changed in a task performance under an orange color light and a white color light in a laboratory for stabilization and relaxation. The study results showed that an alpha wave, beta wave, high-beta wave were high under the white color light. The task performance time, however, showed significant fast performance under the orange color light. Although pre-existing low CCT has been considered as typical type for stabilization and relaxation, this study provides that the various applications in the elements of cognition, tasks, and types can affect improvement of task performance and occupation ability.

  • Many people complain their big or little stress due to the complicated city life in modern times, so they are exposed of the mental illness. Especially, not only students and office workers but also most people suffer from degradation of efficiency at work and keeping the high quality of life because of the insufficiency of concentration ability. To improve the concentration ability, the meditation is a substitution. The influence of meditation for the concentration ability is experimented with EEG brainwave. Some experienced meditators are participated for the experiments, and the left and right portion of prefrontal lobe, AF3 and AF4, are measured and analyzed. As a result, the changes of rhythmic activity of a unique pattern and power spectra are observed.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare how three kinds of emotionally different music impacted on the emotion and arousal by measuring EEG. The research method was to compare the measurement of the background EEG on Fp1 and Fp2 before, while and after listening using a 2-channel EEG device with various experimental groups aging from 20s to 50s. The results were as follows. 1) At both Fp1 and Fp2, the amplitude of alpha(8-13Hz), SMR(12-15Hz), low beta, high beta, and ${\alpha}/-{\beta}$significantly increased in all music, while at Fp2 only, theta and ??/SMR increased meaningfully.2) At right prefrontal cortex(Fp2), all bands of EEG predominated while and after listening to all songs over Fp1 except for the delta of funeral march which predominated while listening to Fp1.3) The music with a noticeably high alpha value and increased activity was Prelude. These results suggested that Prelude induced brain activity along with relaxation, and the emotionally heavy burden of funeral march decreased the activity of the left brain. This research revealed that feeling emotional change by listening to music was due to the fact that music influenced the brain activity inducing the change of emotion and arousal.

  • Objectives: Periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) might be subdivided based upon whether or not they are associated with visible EEG microarousals (MA). MA is considered to be responsible for nonrestorative sleep and daytime fatigue. The American Sleep Disorders Association's (ASDA) scoring rules for MA based on visual analysis of the EEG changes suggest that MA should last more than 3 seconds. However, it has been suggested that visual analysis may not detect some changes in EEG activity. This study is aimed at measuring changes in EEG spectra during PLMS without MA in order to better understand the arousing response of PLMS. Methods: Ten drug-free patients (three men and seven women) diagnosed with PLMS by polysomnography were studied. Spectral analysis of the EEG was performed in each patient on 30 episodes of PLMS without MA, chosen randomly across the night in stage 2 non-REM sleep. We applied stricter criteria for MA compared to ASDA, by defining it as a return to alpha and theta frequency lasting at least 1 second. Results: The mean PLMS index was $16.7{\pm}10.0$. The mean PLMS duration was $1.3{\pm}0.7$ seconds. Comparison of 4-second EEG activity both before and after the onset of PLMS without MA using independent t-test showed that the movements were associated with significant increase of relative activity in the delta band (p=0.000) and significant decrease of activity in the alpha (p=0.01) and sigma (p=0.000) bands. No significant decrease in the theta (p=0.05), beta (p=0.129), or gamma (p=0.062) bands was found. Conclusion: PLMS without MA was found to be associated with EEG change characterized by increase in the delta frequency band. This finding seems to be compatible with the hypothesis of an integrative hierarchy of arousal responses of Sforza's. Considering that the subjects had lower PLMS index and shorter PLMS duration than those of the previous study, it is suggested that an even less severe form of PLMS without MA could induce neurophysiologic change, which may potentially be of clinical significance.

  • This study investigated the effects of Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) aroma on the brain electrical activity evaluated by electroencephalogram (EEG) in female adults with sleep disorders. The subjects were 28 healthy female adults and their sleep disorders were classified by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal (F3, F4), temporal (T3, T4), occipital (O1, O2), parietal (P3, P4), reference, and ground regions according to the International 10-20 system. Subjects were exposed to the L. angustifolia aroma for 3 min. Results showed that L. angustifolia aroma decreased the occipital and parietal alpha powers, and increased the frontal theta power and occipital beta power in subjects with good sleep quality. On the other hand, L. angustifolia aroma increased the theta power in the all cranial regions after aroma treatment in subjects with poor sleep quality. In conclusion, L. angustifolia aroma diminishes a state of wakefulness in the brain and helps individuals to fall asleep. Therefore, L. angustifolia aroma may have beneficial effect for female adults with sleep disorders.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects on the bio signal of brain waves and pulse waves using acupressure thermal bed combined with acupressure and thermal therapy. Forty healthy adults were divided into 20 experimental groups using combinatorial stimulation beds and 20 non-irritating controls. As a result of the experiment, the EEG was significantly increased in the delta wave and theta wave in the experimental group, and the alpha wave and beta wave decreased significantly. The pulse wave increased the parasympathetic activity index in the experimental group and the heart rate decreased. There was no difference in the control group. This change in EEG can be seen as a combination stimulation bed having a sleep-inducing effect, and a change in pulse wave can seen as having a relaxing effect. This study is expected to be used as basic data for the development of various combination stimulators and functional bed products.
