  • The EEG asymmetry of prefrontal lobe has been researched to analyze the affect such as depression or anxiety and the behavioral characteristics such as BIS(Behavioral Inhibition System)/BAS(Behavioral Activational System) on the basiss of alpha band. However there has been several proposals about the importance of beta asymmetry pointing out the limitation of alpha asymmetry. Here, for 44 numbers of 4-year-old children, by comparing alpha asymmetry and beta asymmetry with BIS/BAS results respectively, we propose the way to classify the characteristics of affect and behavioral trend. We also found that BIS is related with beta-asymmetry, while BAS is related with alpha-asymmetry. As for the affective trait, we use the alpha asymmetry following the other results. Our results seem to be consistent with the other results that the synapse formation of young children is more active at the hemisphere than the right hemisphere.

  • We measured and analyzed the brain waves to observe the characteristics of human drowsiness. The basic method is to analyze the EEG(Electroencephalography) signals from subjects according to the frequency bands. It has been reported that alpha waves are related to a wakefulness state, an eye closure state and a state that begins to sleep. In this study, therefore, we restricted the frequency band for analyzing to between 8 and 13Hz called brain's alpha waves. We observed which components had a stronger influence on human drowsiness among the restricted frequency band and represented the experimental results to analyze using the power spectrum method.

  • In a converting reaction of $p-bromo-\alpha-diethylaminoacetophenone$ (1a) and $p-bromo-\alpha-piperidinoacetophenone$ (1b) with KCN and $(NH_4)_2CO_3$, to hydantoin, the expected 5-(p-bromophenyl)-5-diethylaminomethylhydantion (2a) and 5-(p-bromophenyl)-5-piperidinomethylhydantoin (2b) were not formed. Diethylaminomethyl group and piperidinomethyl group were eliminated and p,p'-dibromodiphenylhydantil (4), which might be formed through dimerization of 5-(bromophenyl)-hydantoin (3), and p-bromobenzoic acid (5), which was formed through a degradation of 5-(bromophenyl)-hydantoin, were obtained. In the case of $p-bromo-\alpha-morpholinoacetophenone$ (1c), the expected 5-(p-bromophenyl)-5-morpholinomethylhydantoin (2c) was formed.

  • Shiro-abhyanga is one of treatments of Ayurveda, which is the ancient system of health care and medicine in India. In this essay, I examined the effect of Shiro-abhyanga for relaxing stress of women in twentieth by the means of the brain wave test. The brain wave test showed that Shiro-abhyanga reduced Delta and Theta waves of the left brain but increased $\alpha$, SMR, Low-$\beta$ waves of the right brain. Delta and Theta waves are usually found in sleeping time. Their high measurement in awakening instructs the stress and depressing situations of objects. However the treatment of Shiro-abhyanga made the decrease of Delta and Theta waves and the increase of Alpha wave in working time. Alpha wave appears while objects are comfortable and peaceful from the relaxation of body and mind. Therefore the growth of Alpha wave says that the treatment of Shiro-abhyanga has an effect on mitigation of stress.

  • The correlations between electroencephalographic (EEG) spectral power and emotional responses during affective sound clip listening are important parameters. Hemispheric asymmetry in prefrontal activation have been proposed in two decades ago, as measured by power value, is related to reactivity to affectively pleasure audio stimuli. In this study, we designed an emotional audio stimulus experiment in order to verify frontal EEG asymmetry by analyzing Event-related Spectral Perturbation (ERSP) results. Thirty healthy college male students volunteered the stimulus experiment with the standard IADS(International Affective Digital Sounds) clips. These affective sound clips are classified in three emotion states, high pleasure-high arousal (happy), middle pleasure-low arousal (neutral) and low pleasure-high arousal (fear). The analysis of the data was performed in both theta (4-8Hz) and alpha (8-13Hz) bands. ERSP maps in the alpha band revealed that there are the stronger power responses of high pleasure (happy) in the right frontal lobe, while the stronger power responses of middle-low pleasure (neutral and fear) in the left frontal lobe. Moreover, ERSP maps in the theta band revealed that there are the stronger power responses of high arousal (fear and happy) in the left pre-frontal lobe, while the stronger responses of low arousal (neutral) in the right pre-frontal lobe. However, the high pleasure emotions (happy) can elicit greater relative right EEG activity, while the low and middle pleasure emotions (fear and neutral) can elicit the greater relative left EEG activity. Additionally, the most differences of theta band have been found out in the medial frontal lobe, which is proved as the frontal midline theta. And there are the strongest responses of happy sounds in the alpha band around the whole frontal regions. These results are well suited for emotion recognition, and provide the evidences that theta and alpha powers may have the more important role in the emotion processing than previously believed.

  • High-frequency is sound produced in non-audible area, which couldn't be heard in daily life. The frequency range above 22Khz is called 'high-frequency' and its components are called 'HFC(High-Frequency Components)'. It is known that ocean wave sound is rich in HFC, because it brings serenity and causes ${\alpha}$-waves in human mind. When this natural sound is combined with high-frequency, it seems to give a pleasurable feeling, indicated by an ${\alpha}$-wave increase and a ${\beta}$-wave decrease. We call this phenomena "the hypersonic effects". In this experiment, subjects listened to the ocean wave sound simultaneously with corresponding frequencies similar to ocean wave frequency components created artificially in a electric circuit. Brain waves were measured by an EEG system with 8 channels using 8 electrodes on Fp1, Fp2, F3, F4, T3, T4, O1, and O2. The results showed that ${\alpha}$-wave increase and ${\beta}$-wave decrease were statistically significant while subjects were listening to the ocean wave sound along with the high frequency components, reflecting the hypersonic effect.

  • Previous studies show that driver mental workload plays a significant role in the occurrence of traffic accidents. This study also analyzes driving workload under different road conditions especially with the brain wave data collected by a driving simulator. We use a logistic regression model to explain the relationship between driving workload and gamma brain waves. The results show that beta band of brain waves becomes broader with more curved sections while alpha band and gamma band become narrower. Since driving workload is negatively correlated with gamma band, it can be concluded that driving condition with less curved section is beneficial for reducing driving stress and increasing driving comfort.

  • This study investigated the effects of Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy on electrical activity in the brain as evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG). The subjects were 29 healthy female young adults, and their sleep quality was assessed by using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal, temporal, occipital, and parietal lobes according to the international 10-20 system. Subjects were exposed to organic Origanum majorana essential aroma (50 ${\mu}l$) for a period of 3 minutes each before, during, and after aromatherapy. Subjects with good sleep quality showed that Origanum majorana essential aroma increased the theta power at the frontal and temporal lobes of both cerebral hemispheres, the left parietal lobe, and the right occipital lobe. Furthermore, Origanum majorana essential aroma decreased the alpha power at the left occipital lobe and the beta power at the right temporal lobe. On the other hand, subjects with poor sleep quality showed an increase in the theta power at the temporal lobe of both cerebral hemispheres and a decrease in the alpha power at the left parietal lobe by Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy. It is concluded that Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy diminishes the state of wakefulness in the brain; alpha and beta powers were both decreased in the subjects with good sleep quality, but only alpha power was decreased in the subjects with poor sleep quality. Moreover, Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy has a sleep-inducing effect in both subjects with good sleep quality and poor sleep quality.
