Studies on the Syndiotactic Poly(vinyl alcohol) Polarizing Film -Preparation of Low Molecular Weight Syndiotactic Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Iodine Complex Film and Its Characterization- (교대배열 폴리비닐알코올 편광필름에 관한 연구 -저분자량 교대배열 폴리비닐알코올/요오드 복합체 필름의 제조와 특성 해석-)

  • A polymer/iodine complex film was prepared using syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (s-PVA) with number-average degree of polymerization of 900 and syndiotactic diad content of 63.1%. In comparison with atactic-PVA/iodine films, degree of polarization of the s-PVA/iodine film was improved up to over 99% although a lower transmittance was obtained. By soaking in iodine/potassium iodide aqueous solution of a lower iodine concentration and subsequent drawing by 4 times, s-PVA/iodine film of a higher transmittance and degree of polarization was produced. The degree of iodine desorption of the s-PVA/iodine film in water were very low. The crystallinity and the d-spacing and crystal size of (100) plane increased at the early stage of soaking time, however, remained constant or decreased slightly with increasing soaking time. In consequence, s-PVA/iodine complex formation took place mainly inside crystal region at the initial stage of soaking time, whereas it occurred outside crystal region or physical adsorption of iodine dominated after sufficient soaking.

  • The relative viscosities and osmotic coefficients of solutions of urea, 1,3-dimethyl-urea(DMU), acetamide(AA), and propionamide (PA) in dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO), water, methanol, and in ethanol have been measured at 25 and $45^{\circ}$C by viscometry and osmometry. Viscosity increment in nonaqueous solutions decreased with increasing of the partial molal volumes of the solutes, but in aqueous solution the result was inversed. Viscosity increment of aqueous solution was smaller than that of aqueous DMU solution, but that of nonaqueous urea solution was larger than that of DMU. Amides, however, showed similar viscosity increment in any solvent.Osmotic coefficients of aqueous solution of urea were larger than those of DMU. In the nonaqueous solutions urea exhibited larger deviation from Raoult's law than DMU. The results indicated that urea molecules break water-structure in water, self-associate in DMSO, and showed larger solute-solvent interaction in alcohols than DMU. It can be also confirmed that amides break alcohol structure to a greater extent than any other solutes.

  • High molecular weight poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to be expected as a candidate material for the wound-dressing was successfully prepared by electron beam (EB) irradiation. To produce PVA hydrogels with various gel fractions, degrees of swelling in water, gel strengths, and elongations, two different number-average degrees of polymerization [($P_n$)s] of PVA were adapted such as 1700 and 4000, and the PVA solution concentration and irradiation dose of EB were controlled to range of 5 $\sim$ 20% and 30 $\sim$ 100 kGy, respectively. The gel fraction and strength of PV A hydrogel were increased with increasing molecular weight of PVA, solution concentration, and irradiation dose of EB. On the contrary, the degree of swelling and elongation of PVA hydrogel were decreased. The thermal property and crystallinity related to degree of crosslinking of PVA hydrogel were examined by the analyses of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction.

Volatile Compounds in the Oxidation of Unsaturated Fatty Acids Caused in Off-flavor of Porcine Liver by HS-SPME (Headspace solid-phase microextraction(HS-SPME)를 이용한 간의 비린내불쾌취에 기인하는 불포화지방산 산화생성물의 휘발성성분)

  • Headspace solid-phase microextraction(HS-SPME) was used to isolate the off-flavor volatile compounds, which are formed during the oxidation of porcine liver and unsaturated fatty acids in porcine liver induced by iron. Three fibers for HS-SPME method development were tested, and the polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene(PDMS/DVB) fiber was selected as providing the best detection of analyzed compounds. In the oxidized arachidonic acid, the major compounds identified were hexanal, 1-octen-3-one(metallic), (Z)-4-heptenal, (E)-2-octenal, 1-octen-3-ol(mushroom), (Z)-2-nonenal (cardboard-like), and (E,E)-2,4-decadienal(fatty, oily). In the oxidized linolenic acid, the major ones were (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal(fishy), (E,E)-3,5-octadien-2-one and (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal. Moreover, those of th oxidized porcine liver with iron were hexanal, 1-octen-3-one, (Z)-4-heptenal, (E,Z)-2,4-decadienal and (E,E)-2,4-decadienal. These results showed that the fishy and metallic off-flavor in porcine liver were due to the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in porcine liver.

  • Toluene of aromatic compounds, MEK of ketones and IPA of alcohols were extremely used as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) on the getting into step with industrial process. The adsorption characteristics of three component solvent vapors (Toluene-MEK-IPA) on the activated carbonaceous adsorbents such as AC, ACF and AC+ACF were investigated in a stainless steel fixed bed adsorption experimental apparatus in order to identify those carbons for eliminating and recovering solvent vapors from industrial emission sources. The used activated carbonaceous adsorbents were pelletized commercial activated carbon and activated carbon fiber. The breakthrough curves and adsorption capacity have been obtained at atmospheric pressure in a adsorption fixed bed. It has been found that non-polar and larger molecules have been adsorbed better than polar and smaller molecules. Especially, alcohols and ketones were poorly adsorbed due to competitive adsorbability in ternary mixture system. However, it could be overcome by employment of activated carbonaceous adsorbent which have different porosity distribution appropriately.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between oral health behavior and dietary habits and caries occurrence test and to provide basic data necessary for prevention of dental caries. The average salivary salivary fraction was 8.35ml and the non - amorphous salivary fraction was 2.41ml. The salivary buffering ability was 9.29 and the mean glucose retention time was 15.81 minutes. In the Streptococcus mutans colony count test, low risk group <105 was 80.5% and low risk group <105 was 84.4% in Lactobacillus colony count test. Correlation between caries test scores showed a positive correlation between salivary ratio and non - salivary ratio, saliva buffering ability, non - salivary fraction and glucose retention time, and Lactobacillus. Factors affecting the irritant saliva fraction were alcohol as a factor affecting the ratio of nuts, pork, and non - irritant saliva. In order to prevent dental caries, proper dietary control education should be combined with dental caries activity test and oral health education for proper eating habits.

Ice Melting Capacity Evaluation of Applicable Materials of De-icing Fluid for High Speed Railway Rolling Stock (고속철도차량용 제빙액으로의 적용가능물질에 대한 융빙성능 평가)

  • In winter season, the snow and ice accretion on the bottom of the high speed railway rolling stock and boogie part has fallen at a high speed from the ballast section (gravel section for the transmission of the rolling stock load received by sleepers and fixing sleepers), causing the gravel to be scattered, thereby damaging the railway rolling stock structures and facilities. In order to solve these problems, the gravel scattering prevention net, manual de-icing, and movable hot air machine were used, but their efficiency was low. For the more efficient de-icing than ever before, an optimum material for de-icing fluid for high speed railway rolling stock was developed by evaluating the ice melting capacity, kinematic viscosity, evaporation of the material used as a chemical de-icing fluid. Four kinds of organic acid salts (sodium formate, sodium acetate, potassium formate and potassium acetate) and two different alcohols (propylene glycol, glycerol) were used as evaluation materials. Potassium formate, potassium acetate, and propylene glycol had similar ice melting capacities in the indoor test, but the propylene glycol showed the best ice melting capacity in spraying the system simulation test. This is because the kinematic viscosity of propylene glycol was 2.989029 St, which is higher than those of other materials therefore, it could stay longer on the ice and de-icing. In addition, potassium formate and potassium acetate were difficult to be used since the crystals precipitated and adversely affected the appearance of the rolling stock. The propylene glycol is the most optimum as an de-icing fluid for the high speed railway rolling stock.

Manufacturing Characteristics and Its Color Change of Chewing Gum coated Various Polyols (당알코올로 코팅한 껌의 제조특성과 색택변화에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of polyols for coating material of chewing gum. Five polyols xylitol, maltitol, isomalt, erythritol, and sorbitol were compared the coating quality, coating and drying time, and color differences. Maltitol was evaluated to be the best quality for coating the gum, whereas erythritol and sorbitol were not considered for coating materials for gum. These results derived from irregular surface layer and low productivity due to increased coating time. According to changes in color of chewing gum, samples coated maltitol and xylitol and isomalt stored at high temperature. In addition, color difference of sample coated maltitol was calculated 2.88 stored at $80^{\circ}C$ for 1 day, but those of xylitol and maltitol were highly evaluated. Sample coated maltitol in polypropylene bag was stored and measured for 1 month. Changes in color of sample was slightly occurred at below $40^{\circ}C$ and the color difference was not more than 3 at $60^{\circ}C$. Chewing gum coated maltitol as coating material was expected more stable in the quality of color during distribution. Current study was performed to color changes during storage, further study will be proceeded about shelf-life of chewing gum coated polyols.

Production of cheese containing alcohol metabolism using Lactobacillus with fig enzyme (무화과(Fig) 효소를 첨가한 유산균을 이용하여 알코올 대사활성 함유 치즈의 제조)

  • In this study, we evaluated the alcohol degradation ability of fig enzyme in the production of cheese using Lactobacillus kitasatonis, Lactobacillus amylophillus, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides sub. The strains were highly resistant to ethanol, acid, and bile acid. When 10% of fig enzyme was added, the alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase activities in each strain were approximately 170, 270, and 190% higher, respectively, than in samples without fig enzyme. The addition of 10% of fig enzyme to produce cheese with the L. amylophillus strain showed an approximately 250% increase in alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase degradation. In conclusion, when fig enzyme was added to produce cheese using L. amylophillus, high alcohol degradation ability was observed. The applicability of fig enzyme addition was confirmed for the production of functional food.

  • High molecular weight syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol)(HMW s-PVA) with number-average degree of polymerization of 10000 and syndiotactic diad content of 61.5%/iodine complex film was prepared. Its adsorption and desorption behaviors of iodine in hot water were investigated. In comparison with atactic PVA film or low molecular weight s-PVA film, the degree of solubility of s-PVA film and the iodine desorption of HMW s-PVA/iodine film in hot water were limited to an extremely lower level. As the soaking time increased, the iodine desorption in hot water was increased. This reason might be explained by the fact that as the soaking time increased, so the iodine adsorption increased not by the stable molecular complex between PVA and iodine but by the simple physical adsorption of iodine.
