  • In order to elucidate the effect of alkali promoter on chemisorption of carbon monoxide on silica supported transition metal catalysts we have investigated the infrared spectra for carbon monoxide chemisorbed on silica supported nickel with and without potassium coating within the frequency range of 1800 ~ 2100cm$^{-1}$ at various nickel concentrations and CO pressures. For the system without potassium coating the IR band intensities are found to greatly depend on the nickel conwgfra concentration although the band positions are scarcely affected. The band positions are nearly coincident with those reported by other people, but we have clarified that the 2057cm$^{-1}$ band arises from Ni(CO)$_4$ molecules physisorbed on silicagel. Besides this, the effect of temperature on CO chemisorption has also been investigated. On coating with potassium we have found that all the bands observed for the system without potassium coating suffer red shifts by 2 ~ 10cm$^{-1}$ and the formation of Ni(CO)$_4$ is inhibited. Furthermore, we have recognized that on the nickel surface with potassium coating a disproportionation may occur to yield carbon dioxide molecules.

  • In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of waste glass that cannot be recycled and is landfilled among construction and household waste. To address this issue, research has been conducted to recycle waste glass as sand, but conflicting results have emerged depending on the type of waste glass and the manufacturing method of recycled glass sand(RGS). To promote the use of RGS, it is necessary to review its performance under field conditions, such as mass production processes and real scale concrete applications. This study introduces examples of mass production system process for RGS and evaluates the effects of the usage conditions(color, content, particle size) of mass-produced RGS on the mechanical properties and alkali-silica reaction(ASR) of mortar. As a result, the mass production system process of RGS causes microcracks inside the particles, which are the cause of mortar strength reduction and ASR expansion. The number of microcracks is highest in clear RGS. Based on these results, it is proposed that RGS can be used as a replacement for natural sand with a content of less than 25 % or a particle size of less than 0.5 mm.

  • The paper presented investigates the effects of kaolinite on strength properties of alkali-activated multi-component cement. The binders of this study was blended of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF) and kaolinite (KA). In this study, the specimens of combination of 20%~70% GGBFS, 10%~60% FA, 10% SF (constant ratio) and 10%~50% KA binder were used for strength properties tests. The water/binder ratio was 0.5. The binders (GGBFS + FA + SF + KA) was activated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) was 10% by total binder weight (10% NaOH + 10% $Na_2SiO_3$). The research carried out is on the compressive strength, water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The compressive strength decreased as the contents of KA increase. One of the major reason for this is the low reactivity of KA compared with other raw materials used as precursors such as GGBFS or FA. The presence of remaining KA indicates that the initially used quantity has not fully reacted during hydration. Moreover, the results have indicated that increased of KA contents decreased UPV under all experimental conditions. The drying shrinkage and water absorption increased as the content of KA increase. Test result clearly showed that the strength development of multi-component blended cement were significantly dependent on the content of KA and GGBFS.

  • Acidic properties of ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts were investigated by temperature-programmed desorption technique and ir spectroscopy. Ammonia t.p.d. pattern of HZSM-5 showed three different states, designated as ${\alpha}$,${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$. The amount of ${\gamma}$-state decreased with increasing $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio, and upon cation-exchanging with alkali cations. From the ir adsorption spectra of absorbed pyridine and the reaction study of toluene alkylation, the ${\gamma}$-state could be explained to be due to the strong Bronsted acid sites of H-ZSM-5. Also they showed that the interaction between alkali cation-exchanged ZSM-5 and bases, i.e. $NH_3$ and pyridine, was increasing with decreasing the size of cations.

  • This study was designed, firstly, to determine the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of some rock aggregates, secondly, to offer interrelationships between those and mechanical properties, and thirdly, to evaluate their suitability for concrete aggregates. Mineralogical, chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics of the studied rock aggregates indicate that granite from BJ quarry and banded gneisses from KB. HI and SK quarry, and quartzite from the Hongcheon riverside are not proper to cement concrete aggregates because of quartz's potential possibility of alkali-silica reaction, and limestone in SY quarry is proper to asphalt concrete aggregates owing to dolomite causing alkali-carbonate reaction. Augen gneiss and diorite from KB and SA quarry, respectively, are to be not suitable for concrete aggregates because of biotite contents, but augen gneiss in HI quarry and gneisses in Hongcheon riverside are proper to concrete aggregates because of mineralogical and mechanical characteristics.

  • The Deogbong napseok clay deposit which is composed mainly of dickite and pyrophyllite has been formed by hydrothermal alteration of the Late Cretaceous volcanic rocks consisting of andesitic tuff and andesite. The mineralogy of the napseok ores and the hydrothermal alteration processes have been studied in order to know the nature of the interaction between minerals and fluids for the formation of the deposit. Chemical distribution shows that alkali elements and silica were mobile but alumina was relatively immobile during the hydrothermal processes. It is evident that enrichment of alumina and leaching of silica from the host rock led to the formation of the napseok ore, whereas the enrichment of silica in the outer zone of the deposit gave rise to the silica zone. A large amount of microcrystalline quartz closely associated with dickite and pyrophyllite suggests the increasing activity of silica. Thus Si which was released away from the argillic zone by the increasing activity of silica. Thus Si which was released away from the argillic zone by the increasing activity of silica solubility moved out precipitating in the margin of the deposit to form the silica zone. Variation in dickite crystallinity implies the local change in the stability of the system. Thermodynamic calculation shows that the invariant point of pyrophyllite-dickite (kaolinite)-diaspore-quartz assemblages at 500 bars in the system $Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}-H_{2}O$ is about 300 $^{\circ}C$. Based on the mineral assemblages and the experimental data reported, it is estimated that the main episode of hydrothermal alteration occurred at least above 270 to 300 $^{\circ}C$ and $X_{CO_2}$ <0.025. Mineral occurrence and chemical variation indicate that the activity of Al is high in the upper part of the deposit, whereas the activity of Si is high in the lower part and the margin of the deposit. The nonequilibrium phase relations observed in the Deogbong deposit might be due to local change in intensive thermodynamic variables and fluid transport properties that resulted in the formation of nonequilibrium phases b of several stages.

  • After observing the alkali-silica reaction of the mortar that contains glass abrasive sludge, when evaluating it by a mineral or chemical point of view, it contained reactive silica $(59{\sim}67%)$ and $R_20$ elements $(4.3{\sim}9.8%)$. Also, when evaluated by the mortar bar method, an addition of 5 wt% of CRT glass abrasive sludge is judged harmless. However when adding more, there appear severe contractions, thus carefulness is needed while using. Less than 0.10% of expansion was measured when adding up to 30wt% of flat glass abrasive sludge. However, after 30 days of the measurement, more than 0.1% rate of expansion was measured when adding more than 5 wt%. Therefore, more detailed experiments are needed in case of more than 5 wt%.

  • Various approaches have been attempted to develop recycling technologies related to industrial waste resources containing metals. Among them, glass is not decomposed into microorganisms, so landfill is not suitable, and interest in the recycling of waste glass is increasing. In this paper, by incorporating chelate resin to suppress the elution of heavy metals in waste glass and using waste glass as a fine aggregate and we want to evaluate the strength, drying shrinkage, alkali-silica reaction and heavy metal leaching of shielded filler materials and to provide basic data for utilizing waste glass as an economical and environmentally friendly shielding filler. As a result of the test, it was found that the use of waste glass as a fine aggregate was effective in the development of strength, but the incorporation of chelate resin had an influence on the strength development. In addition, the addition of chelate resin was effective in improving drying shrinkage but it was found to affect the alkali - silica reaction. As a result of the heavy metal leaching test, the KSLP test method satisfies all the criteria for heavy metal leaching. However, in case of lead, the limit of US ANSI 67-2007a was exceeded and further study should be done.
