A cloud detection method is introduced to improve the reliability of NOAA/AVHRR Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data processed during the daytime and nighttime in the TeraScan System. In daytime, the channels 2 and 4 are used to detect a cloud using the three tests, which are spatial uniformity tests of brightness temperature (infrared channel 4) and channel 2 albedo, and reflectivity threshold test for visible channel 2. Meanwhile, the nighttime cloud detection tests are performed by using the channels 3 and 4, because the channel 2 data are not available in nighttime. This process include the dual channel brightness temperature difference (ch3 - ch4) and infrared channel brightness temperature threshold tests. For a comparison of daytime and nighttime SST images, two data used here are obtained at 0:28 (UTC) and 21:00 (UTC) on May 13, 2009. 6 parameters was tested to understand the factors that affect a cloud masking in and around Korean Peninsula. In daytime, the thresholds for ch2_max cover a range 3 through 8, and ch4_delta and ch2_delta are fixed on 5 and 2, respectively. In nighttime, the threshold range of ch3_minus_ch4 is from -1 to 0, and ch4_delta and min_ch4_temp have the fixed thresholds with 3.5 and 0, respectively. It is acceptable that the resulted images represent a reliability of SST according to the change of cloud masking area by each level. In the future, the accuracy of SST will be verified, and an assimilation method for SST data should be tested for a reliability improvement considering an atmospheric characteristic of research area around Korean Peninsula.
This study is to analyze the temporal and spatial distributions of solar radiation in South Korea. Solar radiation data is observed every minute at 22 KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) stations using pyranometer from January 2000 to August 2007. These data were calibrated using intensive comparative observation and solar radiation model. Intensive comparative observations are accomplished at 22 KMA stations between KNU (Kangnung (Gangneung-Wonju) National University) standard and station instruments during the month of August 2007. The solar radiation of a clear sky mainly is affected by precipitable water, solar altitude and geological height. Also old (raw) data is corrected by the solar radiation model only about clear day and is revised based on the temporal trend of instrument's sensitivity decrease. At all periods and all stations, differences between raw data (13.31 MJ/day) and corrected data (13.75 MJ/day) are 0.44 MJ/ day. So, the spatial distribution of solar radiation is calculated with seasonal and annual mean, and is the relationship with cloud amount is analyzed. The corrected data show a better consistency with the cloud amount than the old data.
This study examines the impacts of land cover changes on the East Asia summer monsoon with the National Center for Atmospheric Research Regional Climate Model (NCAR RegCM2), coupled with Biosphere Atmosphere Transfer Scheme (BATS). To assess the goals, two types of land cover maps were used in the simulation of summer climate. One type was NCAR land cover map (CTL) and the other was current land cover map derived from satellite data (land cover: LCV). Warm and cold surface temperature biases of $1-3^{\circ}C$ occurred over central China and Mongolia in CTL. The model produced excessive precipitation over northern land area but less over southern ocean of the model domain. Changes of biophysical parameters, such as albedo, minimum stomatal resistance and roughness length, due to the land cover changes resulted in the alteration of land-atmosphere interactions. Latent heat flux and wind speed in LCV increased noticeably over central China where deciduous broad leaf trees have been replaced by mixed farm and irrigated crop. As a result, the systematic warm biases over central China were greatly reduced in LCV. Strong cooling of central China decreased pressure gradient between East Asian continent and Pacific Ocean. The decreased pressure gradient suppressed the northward transport of moisture from south China and South China Sea. These changes reduced not only the excessive precipitation over north China and Mongolia but also less precipitation over south China. However, the land cover changes increased the precipitation over the Korean Peninsula and the Japan Islands, especially in July and August.
Volcanic ash (VA) can be estimated by remote sensing sensors through their spectral signatures determined by the inherent optical property (IOP) including complex refractive index and the scattering properties. Until now, a very limited range of VA refractive indices has been reported and the VA from each volcanic eruption has a different composition. To improve the robustness of VA remote sensing, there is a need to understanding of VA - radiation interactions. In this study, we calculated extinction coefficient, scattering phase function, asymmetry factor, and single scattering albedo which show different values between andesite and pumice. Then, IOPs were used to analyze the relationship between theoretical remote sensed radiation calculated by radiative transfer model under various aerosol optical thickness (${\tau}$) and sun-sensor geometries and characteristics of VA. It was found that the mean rate of change of radiance at top of atmosphere versus ${\tau}$ is six times larger than in radiance values at 0.55 ${\mu}m$. At the surface, positive correlation dominates when ${\tau}$ <1, but negative correlation dominates when ${\tau}$ >1. However, radiance differences between andesite and pumice at 11 ${\mu}m$ are very small. These differences between two VA types are expressed as the polynomial regression functions and that increase as VA optical thickness increases. Finally, these results would allow VA to be better characterized by remote sensing sensors.
Five models for net radiation estimation reported by Linacre(1968), Berljand(1956), Nakayama et al. (1983), Chang (1970) and Doorenbos et al. (1977) were tested for the adaptability to Korea. A new model with effective longwave radiation term parameterized by air temperature, solar radiation and vapor pressure was formulated and tested for its accuracy. Above five models with original parameter values showed large absolute mean deviations ranging from 0.86 to 1.64 MJ/$m^2$/day. The parameters of the above five models were reestimated by using net radiation and meteorological elements measured in Suwon, Korea. These five models with new parameter values showed absolute mean deviations ranging from 0.74 to 0.88 MJ/$m^2$/day. The following model was newly formulated: Rn=(1- $\alpha$) Rs- $\sigma$$T_{k}$$^{4}$ (0.0103 Exp (0 .0731 Rs) -0.0475 (equation omitted) +0 .2478) ($R^2$=0.997, n=63) where $\alpha$ =albedo, $\sigma$=Stefan-Boltzmann constant, Rs=solar radiation in MJ/$m^2$/day, Tk =air temperature in Kelvin and $e_{a}$=vapor pressure in mb. This model revealed 0.4988 MJ/$m^2$/day in absolute mean deviation when applied to an independent set of meteorological data.a.a.
In this study, the experiment of the measuring of four different types of flooring materials' thermal characteristics was conducted and examined during the summer. The experimental materials were arranged on the existing slab of the roof, and then its thermal characteristics were examined from the point of view of thermal radiation analysis. The aim of this study is ultimately to draw the fundamental data for improvements in a building's thermal function and reduce the urban heat island phenomena through optimizing the thermal characteristics of the surface covering materials of a building. The results from this study are as follows; 1) Each experimental material's albedo was calculated as 0.83 on the aluminum panel, 0.40 on the rock block, 0.37 on the wood deck and 0.21 on the concrete. It shows that the concrete material, which has the lowest short wave reflective rate, absorbed the most radiation energy and the aluminium panel has absorbed the lowest radiation energy. 2) From the each experimental object's value of the long wave radiation, the concrete material measured the highest, at $628W/m^2$, and the aluminium panel measured the lowest at $412W/m^2$. Therefore, it verifies that the experimental objects' own radiation rate determines the amount of the long wave radiation. 3) The degree of energy absorbency of a building's surface covering materials is greatly influenced by its own albedo and radiation rate, Therefore, it needs to be considered for the improvements in a building's thermal function and reducing the urban heat island phenomena. 4) According to the evaluation result of the each experimental object's overall heat transmission screening function on the roof of a building, the wooden deck is proven to be an excellent material for excluding the outside temperature differences effectively with its characteristic of low heat capacity and conduction. Also its surface temperature on the roof slab and the temperature difference during the day were both measured at low.

The remote sensing observations of land surface properties are inevitably influenced by the landscape heterogeneity. In this paper, we introduce a geostatistical technique to provide a quantitative interpretation of landscape heterogeneity in terms of key land surface parameters. The study areas consist of the two KoFlux sites: (1) the Gwangneung site, covered with temperate mixed forests on a complex terrain, and (2) the Haenam site with mixed croplands on a relatively flat terrain. The semivariogram and fractal analyses were performed for both sites to characterize the spatial heterogeneity of two radiation parameters, i.e., land surface temperature (LST) and albedo. These parameters are the main factors affecting the reflected longwave and shortwave radiation components from the two study sites. We derived them from the high-resolution Landsat ETM+ satellite images collected on 23 Sep. 2001 and 14 Feb. 2002. The results of our analysis show that the characteristic scales of albedo was >1 km at the Gwangneung site and approximately 0.3 km at the Haenam site. For LST, the scale of heterogeneity was also >1 km at the Gwangneung site and >0.6 to 1.0 km at the Haenam site. At both sites, there was little change in the characteristic scales of the two parameters between the two different seasons.
A three-dimensional numerical mesoscale model by Pielke's estimation (University of Virginia Mesoscale Model, UVMM) was applied to investigate the effects of land characteristics including land-humidity, land-roughness and land-albedo on some micro-climatic coefficients and the air cooling capacity. The results indicated that land-characteristics exposed a significant effect on air cooling. Air cooling effects between in urban and agricultural areas were compared and the effects were much higher in agricultural area. Air cooling effects of weed species were different and when converted into economic values by diesel oil price the effects were ranged from 411 to 816 Won/plant.

In order to investigate the effect of various pavement materials (artificial grass, natural grass, and clay sand) on the human thermal environment, the microclimate data in early autumn (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and shortwave and longwave radiation) were measured and compared on each surface. The mean air temperature, humidity and wind speed of the pavement materials did not differ significantly and showed the greatest difference in the mean radiant temperature. Natural grass, which has the highest albedo, has the highest amount of shortwave radiation. The artificial turf had the highest surface temperature and the highest amount of longwave radiation. In the human thermal environment index PET, artificial grass > clay sand > natural grass. Natural grass had a maximum 2/3 level lower and a mean 1/2 level lower in PET as compared to artificial grass. The clay sand pavement had a maximum 2/3 level lower and a mean 1/3 level lower than the artificial grass. Natural grass had a maximum 1/3 level lower than the clay sand pavement. Their UTCIs showed smaller differences than the PETs. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully choose materials from the planning stage when designing outdoor spaces, including playgrounds.

The finite-volume method for radiation in a three-dimensional non-orthogonal gas turbine combustion chamber with absorbing, emitting and anisotropically scattering medium is presented. The governing radiative transfer equation and its discretization equation using the step scheme are examined, while geometric relations which transform the Cartesian coordinate to a general body-fitted coordinate are provided to close the finite-volume formulation. The scattering phase function is modeled by a Legendre polynomial series. After a benchmark solution for three-dimensional rectangular combustor is obtained to validate the present formulation, a problem in three-dimensional non-orthogonal gas turbine combustor is investigated by changing such parameters as scattering albedo, scattering phase function and optical thickness. Heat flux in case of isotropic scattering is the same as that of non-scattering with specified heat generation in the medium. Forward scattering is found to produce higher radiative heat flux at hot and cold wall than backward scattering and optical thickness is also shown to play an important role in the problem. Results show that finite-volume method for radiation works well in orthogonal and non-orthogonal systems.
