  • Aluminum-based composites containing $C_{60}$-fullerenes are produced by hot rolling of ball-milled powder. The grain size of aluminum is effectively reduced to ~100 nm during ball-milling processes, leading to grain refinement strengthening of the composite. Furthermore, $C_{60}$-fullerenes are gradually dispersed during ball-milling processes and hence the strength of the composite increases with the volume of $C_{60}$-fullerenes. The composite containing 10 vol% $C_{60}$-fullerenes with a grain size of ~ 100 nm exhibits ~1 GPa of compressive strength.

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a weight-reduction design method for the hybrid carbody of a high-speed maglev train that uses aluminum extrusion profiles and sandwich composites. A sandwich composite was used on the roof as a secondary member to minimize the weight. In order to assemble the sandwich composite roof and aluminum extrusion side frame of the carbody using welding, a guide aluminum frame located at the four sides of the sandwich composite roof was introduced in this study. The clamping force of this guide aluminum frame was verified by three-point bending test. The structural integrity and crashworthiness of the hybrid carbody of a high-speed maglev train were evaluated and verified according to the Korean Railway Safety Law using a commercial finite element analysis program. The results showed that the hybrid carbody composed of aluminum extrusion frames and a sandwich composite roof was lighter in weight than a carbody made only of aluminum extrusion profiles and had better structural performance.

  • In this study, the characteristics of filament wound composite/aluminum ring specimens were investigated at cryogenic temperature. The ring specimens were manufactured using carbon fibre and Type B epoxy resin which had been developed for cryogenic use. As a result of measuring thermal strains at -150℃, it was found that compressive thermal stress was induced in composite part on the contrary, tensile thermal stress in aluminum part which was about 32% of yield stress and in turn, caused aluminum to be yielded at lower load level. In addition, Thermal strains which resulted from finite element analysis showed good agreement with those of the experiment. After 6 mechanical loading cycles had been applied to the ring specimen at -150℃, tensile tests were performed at -150℃ using a split disk fixture. As a result, it was shown that composite strength in a liner-composite tank structure which is for the use of cryogenic propellant tank would be decreased by auto-frettage pressure which is applied to it.

  • In this study, the lightweight modular design of hybrid railway carbody structures made of sandwich composites and aluminum extrusions was investigated by using topology and size optimization techniques. The topology optimum design was used to select the best material for parts of the carbody structure at the initial design stage, and then, the size optimum design was used to find the optimal design parameters of hybrid carbody structures using first-order and sub-problem methods. Through the topology optimization analysis, it was found that aluminum extrusions were suitable for primary members such as the underframe and lower side panel module to improve the stiffness and manufacturability of the carbody structures, and sandwich composites were appropriate for secondary members such as the roof and middle side panel module to minimize its weight. Furthermore, the results obtained by size optimization analysis showed that the weight of hybrid carbody structures composed of aluminum extrusions and sandwich composites could be reduced by a maximum of approximately 17.7% in comparison with carbody structures made of only sandwich composites.

  • In this sturdy, large experimental (ISO 13785-2) was performed to analyze the building materials used in fire retardant materials for aluminum composite panel and in general properties. As a results, maximum temperature in the case of the general materials was measured in 210 seconds $1,021^{\circ}C$, the retardant materials was measured in 1,200 seconds early $1,190^{\circ}C$. The retardant material of aluminum composite panel, Fire behavior if the ignition is slow and the general materials in aluminum composite panel, fire ignition and combustion at the same time was growing rapidly. The general materials and flame-retardant material of aluminum composite panel was an obvious difference to the combustion ignition but after ignition combustion mode showed a similar pattern of the rapidly vertical spread of flame. The results of this study, in order to reduce the risk of aluminum composite panels for fire and the retardant materials used for ignition the slow should be actively encouraging. Also after the ignition, there is an urgent need to put out a fire in exterior materials for extinguishing facilities.

  • In this research, exterior material combustion experiment was really tested to evaluate fire risks of aluminium complex panel which is used a lot for building exterior material. As a result, We saw fast fire spreading of aluminium complex panel. The reason is polyethylene in aluminum complex panel combust spreading fast fire flame vertically. In this test, the highest heat release rate of aluminum complex panel was 1,144 kW and surface temperature which is measured by thermocouple went up to more than $903.3^{\circ}C$, that temperature is quite a higher than $660^{\circ}C$ which is aluminum melting temperature. So, fire of aluminum complex panel can be evaluated to give us severe damage both by fast fire spreading vertically and by fire spreading through openings internally. These results from real experiment will be able to use to predict fire spreading of aluminum complex panel by comparing to modeling materialization of aluminum complex panel in the future.

  • In this study, aluminum nitride (AlN) reinforced aluminum (Al) matrix composites are fabricated via plasma arc melting under a nitrogen atmosphere. Within a minute of the chemical reaction between Al and N, dispersed AlN with the shape of transient and lamellar layers is in situ formed in the Al matrix. The composite contains 10 vol.% AlN reinforcements with low thermal resistance and strong bonding at the interfaces, which leads to the unique combination of thermal expansivity and conductivity in the resulting composites. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the composite can be further reduced when Si was alloyed into the Al matrix, which proposes the potential of the in situ Al matrix composites for thermal management applications.
