  • This study was undertaken to determine the concentrations of 15 aldehydes in air samples collected from 21 households including 9 atopy patient's homes and to assess the extent of exposure and risk for an individual due to inhalation. Of all the aldehydes identified in both indoor and outdoor environment, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were the most abundant aldehydes, which were occupied $60\%\;and\;17\%$ of total amount, respectively. The geometric mean concentration of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in indoor air were $170.5\pm1.9\;{\mu}g/m^3\;and\;47.3\pm1.5\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. There existed a strong correlation between formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other aldehydes. And the ratio of indoor and outdoor concentrations (I/O) exceeded 1.0 for almost every measured aldehydes except m-tolualdehyde... No associations were found between the level of aldehydes and either housing characteristics or living habits in most of the samples with only a few exception. And the concentrations of all aldehydes indoor air between atopy patient's homes and control homes were not significant(p>0.05). Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde exposures and risks were estimated by using the inhalation unit risk, mean concentrations and the 95th percentiles, and which were $2.6\times10^{-3}\;and\;1.1\times10^{-4}$, respectively. The mean and the 95th percentile risk estimates were 25 times higher for formaldehyde than for acetaldehyde in homes.

  • Objectives: The emission characteristics of aldehydes were investigated in five industries for the efficient management of aldehydes. Methods: Aldehydes and THC were measured from the stack and boundary of facilities. The relative concentrations and odor contribution of aldehydes were evaluated. Results: The concentrations of aldehydes in the asphalt manufacturing and printing industries were relatively high. Formaldehyde met emission limits for all facilities. According to the odor contribution analysis of aldehydes, i-valeraldehyde and butyraldehyde, which have a relatively low odor threshold value, were found to be the major odor-causing substances in the painting and textile processing industries. Conclusions: Among the aldehydes, the major emission compounds were formaldehyde in asphalt manufacturing, acetaldehyde in the paper manufacturing and textile processing industries, and butyraldehyde in the printing and painting industries. Therefore, to increase the effectiveness of aldehyde reduction, proper control devices need to be installed and operated according to the emission characteristics of aldehydes.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the emission characteristics of aldehydes emitted by the printing industry and to evaluate their impact on adjacent residential areas. Methods: Aldehydes and THC were measured from the front of the control device in the printing and coating process. Aldehydes and ketones were measured by workplace area, residential area, and background area to evaluate their impact. Results: The concentrations of formaldehyde (<0.047 ppm) and acetaldehyde (<0.068 ppm) in the printing and coating process were relatively low, and the methyl ethyl ketone used as the primary solvent was the main carbonyl compound in the printing process. The daily mean concentrations of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were not significantly different by workplace area, residential area, or background area. However, the concentration of methyl ethyl ketone was high in the order of workplace area, residential area, and background area. Conclusions: The concentrations of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the adjacent residential areas are considered to be more influenced by secondary sources of photochemical reactions than by primary sources. Methyl ethyl ketone is considered to be highly influenced by the primary source, which is printing facilities.

  • The reaction of 3-(1-ethoxycarbonyl)ethyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinoxaline (8) with hydrazine hydrate gave 3-(1-hydrazinocarbonyl)ethyl-2-hydroxyquinoxaline (9). The reaction of compound 9 with substituted benzaldehydes and heteroaryl aldehydes afforded 2-hydroxyquinoxalines (10-12), respectively. The reaction of compound 9 with alkyl (ethoxymethylene)cyanoacetates and ethoxymethylenemalononitrile resulted in the intramolecular cyclization to give the 5-amino-1-[2-(3-hydroxyquinoxalin-2-yl)propanoyl]-pyrazoles (13), respectively. Compounds 10-13 showed the tautomerism between the lactam and lactim forms in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. The tautomer ratios were determined by the $^1H$ NMR. The herbicidal and fungicidal activities of the synthesized compounds were investigated.

  • Purpose: The study examined dry eye symptoms of occupants in a newly constructed building and its effects on their work productivity and general activity. Methods: The study subjects were 33 office workers who spent more than eight hours per day on average in a new building constructed in the past three months. The indoor air quality of the new building was evaluated by measuring aldehydes, temperature and humidity. The level of dry eye symptoms was classified into normal, mild, moderate and severe by using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). The experience of LASIK surgery, use of eye makeup, daily use time of a computer and smart-phone, and average daily working hours were also examined. The Work Limitation Productivity Questionnaire was used as the questionnaire about work productivity and general activity to measure the impairment level on a ten-point scale. Results: The concentration variation of formaldehyde in the office was $42.42{\pm}6.30{\mu}g/m^3$. The temperature and humidity were $26.2{\pm}0.70^{\circ}C$ and $40{\pm}1%$, respectively. The respondents with normal, mild, moderate and severe dry eye symptoms were 15.2%, 18.2%, 18.2% and 48.5%, respectively. The severity of dry eye symptoms and impairment of work productivity and general activity demonstrated high correlations of 0.599 and 0.655, respectively (p<0.001). Compared to the normal case, severe dry eye symptoms demonstrated significantly high impairment of work productivity and interruption of general activity (p<0.001). The case of serious dry symptoms showed the possibilities of having impairment level of work productivity and interruption of general activity above three points 3.26 times (p=0.032) and 2.25 times (p=0.045), respectively, higher than that of the normal case. Conclusions: It was confirmed that dry eye symptoms among office workers in a newly constructed building affects work productivity and general activity.

  • In this study, the effects of biofilter media type (three different activated carbons and anthracite), empty bed contact time (EBCT) and temperature on the removal of four aldehyde species (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal and methylglyoxal) in BAC filters were investigated. Experiments were conducted at three water temperature (5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$) and four EBCTs (5, 10, 15, and 20 min). The experimental results indicated that the coal based BAC retained more bacterial biomass on the surface of the activated carbon than the other BACs, and increasing EBCT or increasing water temperature also increased the four aldehyde species removal in BAC filters. To achieve above 80% of removal efficiency for four aldehyde species in a BAC filter, above 15 min EBCT at $5^{\circ}C$ and 10 min EBCT at above $15^{\circ}C$ were required. The kinetic analysis indicated a first-order reaction rate for the biodegradation of four aldehyde species at various water temperatures. Data obtained from the BAC filters at various temperatures were also used to evaluate pseudo first-order rate constants for four aldehyde species. The half-lives evaluated for formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal and methylglyoxal in the coal-based BAC ranging from 0.89 to 3.19 min, from 0.75 to 3.35 min, from 2.16 to 4.72 min and from 1.49 to 3.86 min, respectively, could be used to assist water utilities in designing and operating BAC filters.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate relationship between worker's ophthalmoxerosis symptom and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) variation after planting indoor plants at newly-built office building. Methods: We selected a new office building located in Sejong-si and occupants who work in the Office for study. The indoor air pollutant was investigated according to applying indoor plants. The indoor air quality of the new building was evaluated by measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aldehydes, temperature and humidity. The level of dry eye symptoms was classified into normal, mild, moderate and severe by using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Results: There was VOCs' reduction effect according to placing indoor plants because the concentration of VOCs in newly-built government office (Sejong-si) was highly decreased when the indoor plants was placed at the office. The occupants' SBS (Sick Building Syndrome) symptoms score was gradually decreased in accordance with applying indoor plants. However, SBS symptoms score was increased when the office was not applied indoor plants. There was not statistical significance in workers' dry eye questionnaire results. Conclusions: There was reduction effect of indoor air pollutant in applied indoor plants office. Also, in case of questionnaire results of ophthalmoxerosis and SBS (Sick Building Syndrome) symptoms score were showed positive effect. This study is needed longer-term study because of complements of difference of individual sensitivity and there are some limitations due to field survey research.
