Purpose : Growth hormone(GH) has been recognized as an effective treatment for short children born small for their gestational ages(SGA), and nowadays it has been widely used for the treatment of short children born SGA. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of GH treatment for the children born SGA. Methods : The study population was made of 40 short children born SGA with GH-treated(n=26) and untreated control group(n=14). In order to evaluate the effect of GH treatment, the changes in standard deviation scores(SDS) of the GH-treated group were compared to the changes in SDS before and after treatment from the control group in the same period. Results : There were no differences between the GH-treated group and the control group in gestational age, birth weight, chronological age, target height and the period of follow-up observation; however, the GH-treated group had lower height SDS($-3.3{\pm}0.9$) than the control group($-2.4{\pm}0.4$) before treatment(P<0.05). The GH-treated group had gained $1.2{\pm}1.0$ height SDS during GH treatment while the control group had gained $0.5{\pm}0.6$ height SDS. In the GH treatment group, HDL-cholesterol increased from $48.5{\pm}9.9mg/dL$ to $56.1{\pm}8.7mg/dL$(P<0.05) and LDL-cholesterol decreased from $88.1{\pm}23.3mg/dL$ to $76.4{\pm}19.4mg/dL$(P<0.05) after treatment. There were no changes in total cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid and fasting blood sugar. IGF-I increased from $224.9{\pm}191.3{\mu}g/L$ to $443.2{\pm}152.5{\mu}g/L$(P<0.05) and IGFBP-3 also increased from $3.7{\pm}1.3mg/L$ to $5.6{\pm}1.2mg/L$(P<0.05). Conclusion : We conclude that growth hormone treatment is effective in the treatment of short children born SGA.
Purpose : Dialysis in children with chronic renal failure presents with many difficulies. The purpose of this study is to find an improved method in chronic dialysis in infants and children less than 2 years of age by analyzing the experience with 10 cases. Methods : A retrospective review of the medical records of 10 patients(6 boys and 4 girls) was conducted. The patients had chronic renal failure and underwent chronic dialysis at Samsung medical center from March 1999 to February 2007. Results : At Initiation of dialysis, the median age was 3 months old(22 days-20 months), the median body weight was 3.75 kg(2.2-10.3 kg), and the median serum creatinine level was 4.3 mg/dL(2.0-11.4 mg/dL). The median duration of dialysis was 29.5 months(3-62 months). Dysplastic kidney disease was the most common underlying renal disease. Two patients were treated with hemodialysis, 4 patients with peritoneal dialysis, and 4 patients eventually switched dialysis modality. Nine of the 10 patients took erythropoietin and anti-hypertensive drugs. At the end of the follow up period, 1 patient received kidney transplantation, 2 patients died due to sepsis, and 5 patients were treated with peritoneal dialysis. Two patients were lost to follow up. The most common complication of dialysis was infection. Achieving vascular access and maintaining proper catheter function were the most important factors in treating patients with hemodialysis. The growth status of patients was aggravated after 6 month of dialysis but improved after 1 year of dialysis. Patients showed better growth on peritoneal dialysis than hemodialysis. Conclusion : Chronic dialysis can be performed successfully in infants and children under 2 years of age. Vascular access was the main limitation of hemodialysis, and infection was the common problem in both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. To improve the patients survival rate and quality of life, major efforts should be directed toward the prevention of infection and preservation of catheter function. In Korea, mowing the grass of a grave (Beolcho) is a very important event preceded by Chuseok (Korean thanks giving day) and Si-Hyang (annual ancestral feast). Because Beolcho usually takes place one or two weeks before Chuseok, the traffic accidents on roads are getting worse and safety accidents are getting more and more. Erroneous Beolcho methods can cause the soil to be exposed and cause the loss of soil or the low shoot density of graveyard grass or weed occurrence. Therefore, the dispersion of the Beolcho timing and the approprite method can be import issues. The present study assessed the effects of grass mowing timing and height before Chuseok on the growth of Zoysia japonica and Z. matrella. The mowing timing was evaluated at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks before Chuseok, and the mowing height differently according to the two type of grass. In Z. japonica, the faster mowing before Chuseok, the longer the plant height, and the coverage rate and shoot density were higher. In Z. matrella, the faster mowing, the longer the shoot length, but the coverage rate and shoot density did not show any difference or tendency. As compared to Z. japonica, the plant height of Z. matrella was kept short regardless of the time of mowing. In both grasses, the plant height was shortened when mowing was done at low cutting height, but the coverage rate and shoot density were decreased. In addition, it was shown that it is advantageous to maintain the shoot density of graveyard lawn by 40-50 mm or 30-40 mm cutting above the ground for Z. japonica or Z. matrella, respectively.

Recently, having neighborhood parks within walking distance has grown in importance. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of user satisfaction with neighborhood parks within walking distance considering interior and exterior environments. To do so, a field survey and GIS were conducted to construct data which were then compared with result of the analysed environment. Finally, amultiple regression analysis was conducted to confirm impact on user satisfaction of environment. By summarizing the study results, it was found that users of Hwarang Park exhibited a high level of satisfaction with 'park facilities' and 'safety of park use'. In the case of Gwanum Park, users exhibited a high level of satisfaction with 'green space' and 'amount of shade'. On the contrary, two park users exhibited low levels of satisfaction with 'facilities for children' and 'various attractions' within the parks. The pedestrian environment of Hwarang Park was rated higher than Gwanum Park within the park service area. User satisfaction was also rated higher than for Gwanum Park. However, two park users exhibited low levels of satisfaction with 'various attractions' within the pedestrian environment. From the result regression analysis of the total satisfaction factors, 'environment of access route', 'park facilities' and 'space for walking' positively influenced park use satisfaction. It was found that improvement of the pedestrian environment would be more effective than the improvement of the internal environment on Hwarang Park. This study investigated correlation with the access road environment as well as the interior environment of the parks. The results of this research will be used to improve accessibility and availability for neighborhood parks within walking distance.

This study was conducted to investigate on food component characteristics of seafood cooking drips (skipjack tuna cooking drip, octopus cooking drip and oyster cooking drip) as a source of functional seasoning. Heavy metal contents of seafood cooking drips were below food safety level. Among seafood cooking drips concentrated to 5 folds, the crude protein content was the highest (18.1%) in skipjack tuna cooking drip (SCD). The free amino acid content and taste value were higher in SCD than in other seafood cooking drips, and the major free amino acids were glutamic acid and aspartic acid. Total amino acid content of SCD was 16.2 g/100 mL and the major amino acids were glutamic acid (11.9%), proline (9.2%), glycine (9.1%) and histidine (11.5%). SCD in comparison with other seafood cooking drips showed the highest angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity at $IC_{50}$ of 14.1 mg/mL. These results suggested that SCD could be used as a source of functional seasoning.
The studies reported herein were conducted to investigate the effect of thermal conditions in double-cropping of rice. The accumulated daily mean and minimum air temperatures, for the period of the last 30 years, were examined at the 10 different meteorogical stations which are located in the southern part of Korea. The results obtained could be summarized as follows: 1. The first cropping. a. It seemed to be free from any frost-damage of rice at the seeding stage at Yeosu, Pusan and Cheju. However, it was found that there were some dangers of frost damage for about 30 to 40 day at Iri, Chonju and Kwangju, for 18 to 28 days at Daeku and Ulsan, and for 4 to 14 days at Mokpo and Pohang, respectively. b. The early critical transplanting date seemed to be from middle to late-April in the first cropping. As compared with the ordinary lowland seedlings, the semi-protected and upland ones could be planted 5 and 10 days earlier, respectively. c. The early critical heading date was about late-June and there were some low-temperature damages for 8 to 25 days at young-ear formation stage of rice plant, depending upon location. d. The early critical ripening date (the early critical transplanting date of the 2nd cropping) was from late-July to early-August. It took about 32 to 39 days in ripening. There was a tendency of SS${\fallingdotseq}$SL$15^{\circ}C$ (${\theta}$15) and the minimum of $10^{\circ}C$ (${\theta}$10), the ten locations could be devided into two ripening groups of ${\theta}$15>${\theta}$10 and ${\theta}$15<${\theta}$10. c. The late critical ripening date was around October 9 at Iri, Chonju, Kwangju and Daeku and around October 28 at Mokpo, Yeosu, Pusan and eheju. Three to four days were more required for a complete ripening of rice, as compared with the above dates. d. There was an overlap of about 12 to 42 days between the first and second cropping when early-maturing varieties requiring an accumulated mean air temperature of $1, 550^{\circ}C$, from transplanting to heading, were grown. Therefore, some varieties which could head with an accumulated daily mean air temperature of 1, 000 to $1, 200^{\circ}C$, should be either developed or some new cultural technology be established in order to have a successful double cropping in rice.

Vacuum-packed and seasoned smoked-dried products of red squid, Ommastrephes bartrami, caught in the Northern Pacific Ocean, were prepared and stored at room temperature for 90 days to test their keeping quality. Defrosted squids were eviscerated, skinned, and cut. The mantle meats were flavored with seasoning powders prepared from sugar, sorbitol, salt, monosodium glutamate, or smoke flavor (Smoke-EZ, Alpha Foods Co., Ltd.). After seasoning, the mantle meats were dried at $45^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours, vacuum packed in plastic film bags, and pasteurized in water at $95^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Three kinds of products were prepared : control products (seasoned-dried), solid smoked seasoned-dried and liquid smoked seasoned-dried. The moisture level, water activity, color value (L, a and b value), texture, and viable cell counts of bacteria in these products were determined during storage at room temperature, $5^{\circ}C\;and\;35^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results showed that the products could be preserved at good condition for 90 days though they developed pale brown color during storage. The contents of free amino acids, nucleotides and their related compounds, and the compositions of fatty acids of raw squid and smoked products were analysed. In the amino acids, arginine, taurine, glycine and proline were abundant in raw and smoked products. The contents of hypoxanthine of raw and smoked products were higher than the other nucleotides and their related compounds. In fatty acid compositions of raw and smoked products, the dominant fatty acids were docosahexaenoic acid (22:6), hexadecanoic acid(16:0) and eicosapentaenoic acid (22:5).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical features and risk factors of invasive infections caused by Lactobacillus spp. and Saccharomyces spp., components of commercially available probiotics. Methods: We analyzed demographic and clinical data from children ${\leq}18$ years of age with an invasive infection caused by Lactobacillus spp. or Saccharomyces spp. at the Asan Medical Center Children's Hospital from January 1998 to June 2016. Probiotic consumption data were also analyzed. Results: During the study period, a total of 24 episodes of invasive infections were caused by Lactobacillus spp. (n=16) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (n=8). Along with the increase of probiotic use (755,594 [days/1,000 patient-admission days] in 2001 to 2005, 1,444,066 in 2006 to 2010, and 6,904,736 in 2011 to 2016), the incidence of probiotic-associated invasive infection increased ($R^2=0.70$). The median age of the patients was 1.8 years (range, 2 months to 17 years), and most of them had underlying medical conditions. The 30-day mortality rate was 20.8% (5/24), and 11 (45.8%) of these patients resulted from a severe invasive infection. We determined the risk factors for invasive infection to be: previous intensive care unit stay (odds ratio [OR], 3.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.5 to 6.1] and the presence of a central venous catheter (OR, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.2 to 4.3). Conclusions: Although the probiotic-associated invasive infections rarely occurred in children, the incidence has increased along with probiotic pressure. Judicious use of probiotics is mandatory, especially in young children with underlying medical conditions and continuous surveillance will be needed to minimize the safety concerns.
A total of 498 agricultural reservoirs ranging from $164{\times}10^3\;m^3$ to $253{\times}10^6\;m^3$ in storage volume were investigated from 1990 to 2001 with respect to Chl-${\alpha}$, COD concentration and pollutant loading of BOD, TN, and TP. The lakes and reservoirs could be classified to 4 types using the relationships between the ratio of storage volume per water surface area(ST/WS) and Chl-${\alpha}$ concentration. It is recommended that the improvement of polluted lakes should be performed in the order of integrated consolidation type ${\rightarrow}$ watershed consolidation type ${\rightarrow}$ in-lake consolidation type ${\rightarrow}$ Management type and reservoir should be constructed to be over $5{\sim}6\;m$ in depth(ST/WS ratio) for preventing the eutrophication of agricultural reservoirs. We propose that water quality criteria for agricultural water is changed from less than 8 mg/L to less than 6 mg/L for safety value, $6{\sim}10\;mg/L$ for concern value, and more than 10 mg/L for countermeasure value in COD concentration, respectively.

Multiple cropping system is an important agricultural system in Korea, which is significant to increase forage yield and promote agricultural economic development. This experiment was carried out to develop triple cropping systems (winter cereals crop for forage - silage corn - summer oats) for maximum year-around forage production at paddy field in southern region. We also to select a winter forage crop to determine corn planting time, and to examine the forage productivity and feed value of summer cultivated oat, which was planted after corn cultivation. When winter cereal crops for forages are harvested in accordance with and corn planter, the fresh yield and dry matter yield of rye were 32.0 ton/ha and 5.8 ton/ha, respectively, showing higher yielding compared to other winter crops. Corn silage as summer crop was showed the fresh yield and dry matter yield of 72.1 ton/ha and 20.2 ton/ha, respectively. In the feed value, crude protein and TDN contents were 7.4% and 69.3%, respectively. They was showed higher productivity and feed value. The heading date of High-speed oat was October 10, and its fresh yield and dry matter yield were 37.6 ton/ha and 8.0 ton/ha, respectively. As a feed value, crude protein and TDN content was 11.4% and 59.1%, respectively. Therefore, triple cropping systems for the production of forage all throughout the year are possible with the introduction of summer oats in the southern region, and rye could be the most suitable winter forage crops for triple cropping systems.
