  • The behavior of the 3 hinged precast arch structure was investigated by comparing field measurements with numerical analyses performed for precast lining arch structures, which are widely used for the open-cut tunnel. According to the field measurements, the maximum vertical displacement occurred at the crown with upward displacements during the backfilling up to the crown of the arch and downward displacements at the backfill height above the crown. The final crown displacement was 19 mm upward from the original position. The horizontal displacement at the sidewall, which had a maximum horizontal displacement, occurred inward of the arch when compacting the backfill up to the crown and returned to the original position after completing the backfill construction. According to the analysis of displacement measurements, economical design is expected to be possible for precast arch structures compared to rigid concrete structures due to ground-structure interactions. Duncan model gave good results for the estimation of displacements and deformed shape of the tunnel according to the numerical analyses comparing with field measurements. The earth pressure coefficients calculated from the numerical analyses were 0.4 and 0.7 for the left and the right side of the tunnel respectively, which are agreed well with the eccentric load acting on the tunnel due to topographical condition and actual field measurements.

  • The seismic isolation systems could be used to reduce the seismic response of a structure. The natural period of a structure with seismic isolation system got be long to avoid the prominent seismic period. The purpose of this study is to analyzed the seismic behavior of the truss arch that is supported to column with LRB. Truss arch structures subjected to horizontal seismic have large horizontal and vertical response unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When seismic load is applied to the truss arch with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the truss arch is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced. Also, the seismic behaviors of the truss arch with strengthen column as like lattice column are very similar to that of the truss arch supported to directly foundation. The Seismic Isolation system can be applied to reduce efficiently the seismic response of the spacial structure with not strong column.

  • There are two kinds of instability phenomena for shell-type structures which are snap-through and bifurcation buckling. These are very sensitive according to the shape characteristics including rise-span ratio and especially shape initial imperfection. In this study, the equilibrium path of shallow sinusoidal arches supported by hinges at both ends is investigated to grasp the instability behavior of shell-type structures with initial imperfection. The Galerkin method is used to get the nonlinear discretized equation of governing differential equation considering geometric nonlinearity of arches and the perturbation method is also used to transform the nonlinear equation to incremental form.

  • Recently, with the development of computer, FEM has became the most frequently used numerical analysis method. FEM shows great ability in structures analysis, however, Galerkin's Method is more useful in grasping influence or the tendency of parameter which forms the structure. This paper perform the eigenvalue analysis using Galerkin's Method which is advantageous in grasping the influence and the tendency of parameter which forms the structure and study on the influence of parameter that forms arch on natural frequency response.

  • Only horizontal seismic waves are often applied as designed load to a rectangular rigid frame because the influence of vertical seismic waves is considered small so as to be able to ignore it. But, as for the seismic responses of shell and spatial structures, the responses in the vortical direction is significantly amplified and the vertical responses are amplified even if they are subjected to the horizontal seismic wave only. And also, the horizontal and vertical seismic responses of shell and spatial structures are amplified by vortical seismic waves. An arch has been often used as the main structure component of the large spatial structures and is the mostly simple structure with the seismic response characteristics of the spatial structures. In this paper, for arches as a simple example of the shell and spatial structures, the dynamic characteristics, when the structures are subjected to the horizontal and vertical seismic wave at the same time, are studied, and the horizontal and vertical static seismic force, which have simple forms but hold the response characteristics of arches, are proposed.

  • As the demand for underground space increases, many researchers have been studying the load reduction method using high compressible materials to solve for the stability problem of the overhead load and for the increase of the earth pressure which decreases the function of the underground structure. This paper determines the optimum soft zone and the effect of the using EPS Geofoam as a load reduction material to arch structures. A finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, is used to analyze the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of buried arch structures considering different four EPS Geofoam forms to confirm the most conservative shape. The optimum cross-sectional shape was determined by comparing the results of earth pressure reduction rate in accordance with the change of span-rise ratio and span length of the arch structure. It was confirmed that the earth pressure generated in the arch structure using the optimal soft zone selected by the numerical analysis was reduced by an average of 78%. In this study, the effect of EPS Geofoam on soil pressure reduction and its applicability to underground arch structures will provide an economical and conservative way to design underground structures and will help to increase the usability of deep underground space.

  • The dynamic behavior of spatial structures is different depending on the aspect ration of arch structure, as the rise-span ratio or open-angle, and these spatial structures show differently the character of seismic response in accordance with stiffness and connection of the lower support structures that are directly influenced by earthquake. Therefore, in this paper, dynamic analysis is conducted for seismic response of single layer arch structures by the influence of column's stiffness and connection, to reflect the different vertical and horizontal vibration mode of single layer arch structures. The vertical response of single layer arch structures is more influence by lower columns and the influence of column's connection rotational stiffness is not large, except to the hinged connections.

  • To investigate major influencing factors on earth pressure acting on an arch-shaped cut and cover tunnel, Monte Carlo simulation based quantitative sensitivity analysis was carried out for mechanical properties of ground as well as excavation configuration-related design factors. From the sensitivity analysis, it was intended that effects of earth pressures from different influencing factors on a cut and cover tunnel should be numerically identified. Output factors used in the sensitivity analysis such as vertical and horizontal earth pressures at different tunnel positions were obtained from the finite element analysis. In this study, it was revealed that depending upon positions where horizontal as well as vertical earth pressures were acting, they were differently influenced by the same input factors. In addition, earth pressures acting an cut and cover tunnel depended mainly on the embankment at crown and the inclination of cut slope.

  • Masonry structures that are very strong in compression fail due to the instability of structural shape of geometry rather than the material stress limit. Considering such structural behavior, the use of the limit theorem that focuses on structural collapse mechanisms is more appropriate for the evaluation of the structural safety of stone voussoir arch bridges. This paper is to investigate structural performance of the stone arch bridges constructed using dry construction method in Korea based on the limit theorem and to exploit the result to develop a system for an structural safety margin. It is expected that this study will help us understand structural behavior of stone voussoir arch bridges in Korea. Also, it will provide a guideline to make engineering decision from the viewpoint of the maintenance of cultural heritages.
