To investigate the decomposition kinetics of poly(ethylene terephthalate) the high pressure molten-polymer injector has been devised. Using the experimental apparatus equipped with batch reactor and high pressure molten-polymer injector the decomposition of PET has been performed at constant pressure of 250 bar and 300, 320, $340^{\circ}C$, respectively. At each temperature conditions the conversions after initial 1 minute have shown very high values such as 76-90%. As the temperature increases the conversion reaches more than 98% at 10 minutes. Based on the second order reaction model the reaction rate constants have been obtained. We can calculate the conversions within 2% errors utilizing optimized rate constants. The activation energy for the decomposition of PET at subcritical conditions has shown to be 54.4 kJ/mol.
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from marine brown algae, Saccharina japonica, was investigated in anaerobic dark fermentation. In order to evaluate the VFAs productivity, various experimental parameters (i.e., physicochemical pre-treatment, microorganism inoculation ratio, substrate concentration, and pH) were evaluated. According to the physicochemical pre-treatment methods, the maximum concentrations of VFAs were obtained in the order of sulfuric acid, subcritical water and subcritical water with lipid-extraction. Also, we investigated the operating parameters such as microorganism inoculation ratio (MV/M = 10 to 30), the substrate concentration (18.0 to 72.0 g/L) and pH (6.0 to 7.0) in sulfuric acid pre-treatment method. When the substrate concentrations were 18.0, 36.0, 54.0 and 72.0 g/L at $35^{\circ}C$, microorganism inoculation ratio 15, pH 7.0 for 372 hours, the maximum concentrations of VFAs were respectively 9.8, 13.9, 18.6 and 22.3 g/L. The change in VFAs concentrations was detected that acetic- and propionic acids increased according to increasing pH, while the butyric acid increased with decreasing pH. The VFAs obtained from concentration and separation process may be used as basic chemistry materials and bio-fuel, and they will expect to produce alternative energy of fossil fuel.
The experimental studies for remediation of diesel contaminated soils were performed using subcritical water in laboratory scale. Contaminated soils from industrial area and artificially contaminated soils were utilized for soil remediation. Experimental system was composed for subcritical water to flow upward through the soil packed column for extracting contaminants. 10 g of contaminated soil was packed into the column and water flow rate was 2 mL/min. To evaluate the effects of temperature, pressure and treatment time on the removal efficiency, temperature was changed from 100$^{\circ}C$ to 350$^{\circ}C$, pressure from 50 bar to 220 bar and treatment time at the predetermined temperature from 0 min to 120 min. The purification efficiency increased as temperature increased. However, the effect of pressure and treatment time was low. Temperature 250$^{\circ}C$, pressure 50 bar and treatment time 30 min were selected for optimal operating condition for this study.
The effect of subcritical water for the extraction of total polyphenols and flavonoids from apple peel was investigated, and then the antioxidant activity of the extracts was estimated. Maximum yields of total polyphenolic compounds($36.4{\pm}1.9mg$ quercetin equivalent(QE)/g dried material) and flavonoids($9.9{\pm}0.8mg$ QE/g dried material) were obtained by subcritical water extraction(SWE) with operating conditions of $190^{\circ}C$, 1,300 psi, and 20 min. Furthermore, the highest antioxidant activity($76.1{\pm}1.1%$) was observed in the extract obtained from SWE using the same conditions. The flavonoids from the SWE of apple peel were compared to three conventional extraction methods in terms of their extraction efficiency and antioxidant activity. The SWE was significantly more effective than hot water ($90^{\circ}C$), methanol, and ethanol extraction for flavonoid yield by 4.7-, 2.2-, and 1.3-fold, respectively, and for antioxidant activity by 11.0-, 4.9, and 2.8-fold, respectively.

Subcritical water which acts as organic solvent with increasing temperature and pressure because dielectric constant and viscosity decrease can be used to remediate PAHs-contaminated soil. Factors influencing on extraction were studied with varying the water temperature $200{\sim}275^{\circ}C$, extraction time 0~90 min, flow rate 10~100 mL/min and pressure 3.9~10MPa. 300 g of soil sample which was contaminated with PAHs(naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene; 423, 420, 539 and 428 mg/kg of initial concentration) was packed into the cell and placed to reactor and then the subcritical water was pumped through the cell for PAHs extraction. Naphthalene was removed almost 100% at relatively low temperature ($200^{\circ}C$). The removal rate of phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene increased by 8, 26, and 23% when the temperature increased from 200 to $275^{\circ}C$; and it was gradually increased as extraction time increased from 0 to 90 min. Decreasing removal rate when water flow rate increased from 10 to 30 mL/min, but there was no significant change after 30 mL/min. This is supposed due to channeling phenomenon. The pressure was not an effective factor for extraction of PAHs in this study. Based on the results, the importance of effective factor was in following sequence: temperature >> time > flow rate.
The extraction of flavanones such as naringin, narirutin, naringenin, hesperidin, and hesperetin from grapefruit peels was performed using subcritical water extraction (SWE), hot water extraction, and conventional methods such as methanol and ethanol extraction. We analyzed the total flavanone content using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for each extracting method. Among the three methods, SWE was the optimal method with optimal operating conditions of $170^{\circ}C$ temperature and 10 min operating time. The maximum total flavanone extracted was $86.539{\pm}3.52mg/g$ grapefruit peels. Moreover, we treated the extracts with 60% ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin and then analyzed the surface structure of the encapsulated compounds by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results indicated that the encapsulation in ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin improved solubilization, and the inclusion complex could serve as food supplements.

Although various methods have been investigated for treatment of crude oil contaminated soil, more researches are still required to preserve soil environment. This study investigated the potential utility of subcritical water in remediation of crude oil contaminated soil under various experimental conditions including temperature ($150-300^{\circ}C$), flow rate (1.0-2.0 mL/min) and extraction time (60-120 min). The removal rate of crude oil gradually increased with increasing temperature and time. After treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, the remaining concentration of crude oil met the Kuwait standard clean-up level (10,000 mg/kg) and the Korean standard level (2,000 mg/kg), respectively. The removal efficiency of crude oil increased from 77.8% to 88.4% with increasing extraction time from 60 to 120 min at $250^{\circ}C$. A decreasing rate of oil removal was observed as flow rate increased, possibly due to channeling flow occurred within the soil body at higher flow rate condition. Overall, the results revealed that subcritical water extraction process could be feasible for remediation of crude oil contaminated soil, and the relative effect of parameters on the oil removal was in the order of temperature > time > flow rate.

Subcritical water acts like an organic solvent at elevated temperature in terms of its physicochemical properties. Taking into account this advantage, the remediation experiments of benzo[a]pyrene contaminated soil (8.45 mg/kg of initial concentration) were conducted using subcritical water extraction apparatus. The effect of operating factors on the removal efficiency was studied at the varying the conditions of the water temperature ranging $200{\sim}300^{\circ}C$, extraction time 30~90 min, and flow rate 0.3~2.0 mL/min. 12 g of benzo[a]pyrene contaminated soil was inserted into the extraction cell and placed into the reactor and then the subcritical water was driven through the cell. In this study, the removal efficiency of benzo[a]pyrene was increased from 55.1 to 98.1% when the temperature increased from 200 to $300^{\circ}C$. The removal efficiency was decreased from 97.0 to 77.0% when the flow rate increased from 0.3 to 2.0 mL/min, suggesting that the extraction is limited by intra-particle diffusion. The 30 min reaction time was determined as an effective treatment time at $250^{\circ}C$. Based on the results, the optimum condition for the remediation of benzo[a]pyrene contaminated soil was suggested to be $250^{\circ}C$, 30 min, and 0.3 mL/min.

In this study, the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant efficacy of camellia subcritical water extracts (SWE, 135 ~ 180 ℃, 70 bar) was compared with 70% ethanol and hot water extracts. Among these extracts, the yield (57.9%) of the subcritical water extract, which was extracted under the condition of 180 ℃ and 70 bar was the highest, which increased the extraction yield by more than two times compared to the hot water extract (28.1%). The results of the nitric oxide (NO) production inhibition activity experiment using RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) showed that subcritical water extracts had superior effects in inhibiting the production of NO without cytotoxicity than 70% ethanol and hot water extracts. In addition, DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activity experiments showed that the radical scavenging activity of subcritical water extract was similar to that of 70% ethanol and hot water extract. Moreover, the content of gallic acid was determined by HPLC and the quantity was about 1.62 mg/g for the SWE (165 ℃, 70 bar), which was the highest among all of the extracts. Based on these results, it is concluded the SWE of C. japonica flowers could be potentially applicable as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative ingredients in cosmetic formulations.
The extraction of polyphenol and flavonoid from black rice bran was performed by diverse extraction methods using the sugar solution, ethanol, hot water ($80^{\circ}C$), and by subcritical water extraction (SWE) method. By SWE under operating conditions of $190^{\circ}C$, 1,300 psi, and 10 min, the maximum yields of total polyphenolic compounds (35.06${\pm}$1.28 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/g dried material and flavonoids (7.08${\pm}$0.31 mg QE/g dried material) could be obtained. These results were over 11.77- and 12.21-fold higher than those of the ethanol extraction, which showed the highest extraction efficiency among tested conventional methods in total polyphenols (2.98${\pm}$0.74 mg QE/g dried material) and flavonoids (0.58${\pm}$0.21 mg QE/g dried material), respectively. Though the highest antioxidant activity (87.14${\pm}$1.14%) was observed at the dried extract obtained from ethanol method, the relative antioxidant activity per 1 g dried black rice bran by SWE ($190^{\circ}C$, 10 min) was over 11.53-fold higher than that by the ethanol extraction.
