  • A computer program that can estimate static, dynamic stability and control derivatives using a subsonic-supersonic panel method is developed. The panel method uses subsonic-supersonic source and elementary horse shoe vortex distributions, and their strengths are determined by solving the boundary condition approximated with a thin body assumption. In addition, quasi-steady analysis on the body fixed coordinate system allows the estimation of damping coefficients of aircraft 3 axes. The code is validated by comparing the neutral point, roll and pitch damping of delta wings with published analysis results. Finally, the static, dynamic stability and control derivatives of F-18 are compared with experimental data as well as other numerical results to show the accuracy and the usefulness of the code.

  • Optimized design was performed for a subsonic aircraft wing. The subsonic aircraft is dual turbo-prop and carrying less than 100 passengers. The cruise speed is Mach 0.6. The design was performed by two stages. The first stage is to decide the height of horizontal tail by analyzing the directional stability with Vorstab and then, the optimized wing configuration was selected with Piano, a optimizer commercially available. Fluent, a commercial CFD software was utilized to predict the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft. Drag of the aircraft was minimized with maintaining constant lift for cruise. The optimization reduced 10 counts from the initial wing configuration.

  • Flush Air Data Sensing system (FADS) estimates air data states using pressure data measured at the surface of flight vehicles. The FADS system does not require intrusive probes, so it is suitable for high performance aircrafts, stealth vehicles, and hypersonic flight vehicles. In this study, calibration procedures and solution algorithms of the FADS for a sphere-cone shape vehicle are presented for the prediction of air data from subsonic to supersonic flights. Five flush pressure ports are arranged on the surface of nose section in order to measure surface pressure data. The algorithm selects the concept of separation for the prediction of flow angles and the prediction of pressure related variables, and it uses the pressure model which combines the potential flow solution for a subsonic flow with the modified Newtonian flow theory for a hypersonic flow. The CFD code which solves Euler equations is developed and used for the construction of calibration pressure data in the Mach number range of 0.5~3.0. Tests are conducted with various flight conditions for flight Mach numbers in the range of 0.6~3.0 and flow angles in the range of -10°~+10°. Air data such as angle of attack, angle of sideslip, Mach number, and freestream static pressure are predicted and their accuracies are analyzed by comparing predicted data with reference data.

  • this study, three dimensional surface pressure distributions of SWIM whose main wing has NACA4412 airfoil with NACA0012 flaps were experimentally measured by pressure sensitive paint. Surface pressures on suction and pressure sides of the wing were measured by changing an angle of attack at a Reynolds number of 3.1x105 in KARI 1m subsonic wind tunnel. The experimental results showed that as an angle of attack increases minimum pressure region on a suction side moved from the wing root to the tip and low pressure region around trailing edge of the wing tip which causes wing tip vortex was observed. Although low pressure region at the tip still observed at an angle of attack 15 deg., other area on a suction side showed flat pressure distribution in a span-wise direction. It was also observed that the mean value of pressure coefficients was about 0.077 through a comparison between PSP and pressure taps at the same test conditions.

  • Aerodynamic results for an airplane model produced in a subsonic wind tunnel testing inadvertently include errors which are added during model preparation, data acquisition, manipulation, and/or describing the results. Predicting or analyzing uncertainty for the final results is necessary for trusting them and for applying them to real airplane. This paper describes the analytic and systematic method for calculating and describing the uncertainties of aerodynamic coefficients.

  • The effects of various nozzle configurations on infrared signature are investigated for the purpose of analysing the infrared signature level of aircraft propulsion system. A virtual subsonic aircraft is selected and then a circular convergent nozzle, which meets the mission requirements, is designed. Convergent nozzles of different configurations are designed with different geometric profiles. Using a compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier CFD code, an analysis of thermal flow field and nozzle surface temperature distribution is conducted. From the information of plume flow field and nozzle surface temperature distribution, IR signature of plume and nozzle surface is calculated through the narrow-band model and the RadThermIR code. Finally, qualitative information for IR signature reduction is obtained through the analysis of the effects of various nozzle configurations on IR signature.
