Effect of an Oriental Herbal Composition, Jang Baek Union (JBU), on Alcohol-Induced Hangover and CCl4-Induced Liver Injury in Rats (한약재 조성물이 흰쥐의 알코올성 숙취 및 사염화탄소 유발 간 손상에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of the extract of oriental herbal composition, Jang Baek Union (JBU), on hangover and liver function were studied in rats. To investigate anti-hangover effect, alcohol concentration and acetaldehyde concentration of blood were measured after oral ethanol treatment. Blood alcohol concentration was significantly reduced by pre-treatment of JBU extract. The effect of JBU extract on the blood acetaldehyde concentration was more significant than commercial product used as a positive control. To investigate hepato-protective effect, serum GOT and GPT levels and histological changes of liver tissue were analyzed in $CCl_4$-treated rats. JBU extract adminstration significantly inhibited the increase of serum GPT and GOT levels induced by $CCl_4$-treatment. Moreover, histological injuries of liver tissue such as fatty changes and sinusoidal leukocytosis were inhibited by JBU extract.

  • Filter media finely interspersed with activated carbons were prepared by a needle punching process without using chemical binders. Their characteristics were investigated efficiently to abate environmentally harmful gas such as acetaldehyde, and were compared with those of cabin air filter coated with activated carbons by using chemical binders. These combination filters were installed on a vehicle fan placed in a test chamber of capacity similar to the interior volume of a commercially available passenger car, and the efficiency of acetaldehyde abatement was measured as a function of time. The filter utilizing chemical binders showed somewhat better performance for the elimination of acetaldehyde despite the adverse effect of the chemical binder that would clog the micropores of the activated carbons. It turned out that the needle punching process had the activated carbons agglomerated due to hydrophobic interactions, resulting in a relatively larger void area than that of the filter utilizing chemical binders.

Decomposition Study of Acetaldehyde by Metal-oxide Catalysts (금속산화물 촉매에 의한 $CH_3CHO$의 분해반응 연구)

  • The catalysts for decomposition reaction of acetaldehyde were investigated. The catalysts were prepared with transition metal Ni, Mo, Al on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ support by impregnation method. Physio-chemical properties of catalysts were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, XPS, BET and TPR techniques. The conversion efficiency of catalysts for acetaldehyde was measured in the temperature range of $150{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ by GC through the micro reactor system. The 8 wt% $Ni/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was found to be the most active catalyst of mono-metal catalysts tested, and the 1-3 wt% $Ni-Al/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ showed higher conversion efficiency than other bimetallic catalysts.

Removal Efficiency of the Deodorization Equipment and Characteristics of Malodor during the Process in Co-treatment of Sewage and Food Waste of Su-young Wastewater Treatment Plant in Busan (부산수영하수처리장 하수와 음식물쓰레기 병합처리 시 공정별 악취특성 및 후처리시설 효율평가)

  • Environmental issues are being paid more attention due to income growth, urban overcrowding, and population growth in Korea. Among the various environmental problems, odor damage is the one of the serious factors. To take example for food waste combination treatment in Su-young wastewater treatment plant in Busan, many complaints occurred because this plant locate around residential areas. The purpose of this work is not only to analyze odorous elements and their contributions but also to evaluate odor quotient (OQ), sum of odor quotient (SOQ), and treatment efficiency of bio-filter. The results of dilution sensory test of complex odor, grinder, leachate, hopper indicated higher order complex odors happen in July and August. The main odorous elements consisted of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methly mercaptan and acetaldehyde, which were analyzed by instrumental detection method, and methyl mercaptan was exceeded over 3,571 times of threshold. In addition, result of contribution of odor was methyl mercaptan (49.95 to 59.08%), hydrogen sulfide (20.43 to 29.27%), trimethylamine (8.82 to 13.42%) and acetaldehyde (9.17 to 11.35%). Other facilities were compared with the contribution of the odor using OQ and SOQ during the process. Sulfur compounds, acetaldehyde, and trimethylamine are high contribution of odor using OQ as well as odor intensity of grinding process is highest. As a result, sulfur compounds (e.g., methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide) are highest for OQ and SOQ of grinding process is highest as 7,067. The removal efficiency of deodorization equipment was more than 90.00% in ammonia and amines, but the average efficiency of sulfur compounds was 53.51%. Thus, this facility is more higher contribution of acetaldehyde and trimethylamine than other treatment facilities. And food waste treatment in environmental area needs to consider appropriate capacity and refers to other bio-filter operating conditions.

Catalytic Combustion of Acetaldehyde by Metal Phthalocyanines (금속 프탈로시아닌을 이용한 아세트알데히드의 촉매연소)

  • Catalytic combustion of acetaldehyde has been investigated as a representative of unpleasant odor by its reaction with metal-phthalocyanines(PC). The experiment was conducted at the reaction temperature of 200~41$0^{\circ}C$ and the concentratio of acetaldehyde in air at the range of 0.07~0.94 mole% The pretreated metal-PC has been characterized by UV-VIS and XRD analysis. According to this study catalytic activity of metal -PC was improved by air pretreatment at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. Under this pretreatment condition Co-PC and Cu($\alpha$)-PC were destroyed and new metal oxides were formed such as Co3O4 and CuO respectively. However Zn-PC retained its basic structure even afte air pretreatment. The order of catalytic activity on acetaldehyde combustion was summarized as follows : Zn-PC$\alpha$)-PC. It was found that the complete combustin of acetaldehyde with Cu($\alpha$)-PC was accomplished at its concentrations below 0.2mole% (32$0^{\circ}C$) and 0.6 mole%(35$0^{\circ}C$) in air.

  • 복숭아는 다른 과일에 비해 조직이 연약하고 저장성이 매우 낮은 여름철 과일이므로 선별, 포장 및 유통과정에 세심한 주의가 필요하다. 따라서 출하.유통시 선도를 유지시켜 유통기한을 연장시킨다면 경제적 효과가 클 것이다. 국내에서 일반화되어 있는 PE필름 밀봉 저장방식은 과실의 호흡에 의해 산소농도의 감소와 이산화탄소의 증가로 호흡이 억제되고, 이에 따라 노화가 지연됨으로 과실의 저장수명을 증가시키는 방식이며, PE필름내 기체조성에 영향을 미치는 요소는 필름의 두께와 저장온도이고 저장온도가 필름의 두께, 즉 MA효과보다 과실연화에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이는 필름의 두께가 얇을수록 봉지 내 산소농도가 높아져 호흡대사를 촉진하기 때문인 것으로 이해된다. 과육의 연화가 시작되면서 이취를 유발하는 아세트알데히드와 에탄올의 축적이 증가한다고 보고되고 있고 이는 저장고 내 고농도의 이산화탄소 처리 시에 나타난다. 따라서 본 실험에서는 상온 2$0^{\circ}C$에서 복숭아를 0.05mm LDPE필름으로 포장하여 경도, 당도, pH를 측정하였으며 $O_2$(1, 3, 5%), $CO_2$(5, 10, 15%)를 9구분으로 환경기체를 조성하고 중심합성계획법에 의해 반응 표면분석(RSM)을 하였고 갈변도검사 결과와 함께 종합적으로 복숭아저장에 필요한 최적조건을 규명하고자 하였다.

  • 대기중의 악취물질의 분석은 현행 우리나라 악취공정시험법에 고시되어 있으나 복잡한 농축장치를 필요로하고 조작법이 복잡하고 시간이 많이 소요된다. 주요 악취물질로서 암모니아, 메틸머캅탄, 황화수소, 이황화메틸, 아세트알데히드등은 극미량에서(pub) 악취를 발생시키는 악취 주요물질이다. 그러나 이 물질들은 흡착, 반응성이 커서 정확한 분석이 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 간단한 장치로서 시료농축이 가능하며, 간단히 GC injection에 주입, 분석할 수 있는 SPME법을 이용하여 악취물질을 신속하게 분석할 수 있는 분석법을 개발하고저 하였다. 분석방법에 대한 분석재현성, 분석한계를 조사하였으며, 이 분석방법이 앞으로 악취물질분석방법으로 활용될 수 있도록 기본 분석법을 확립하고자 하였다.   • Exhaust emissions in diesel engine are affected by fuel properties, but the reason for this is not clear. Especially, the recent strong interest in using low-grade fuel such as used vegetable oil as alternative diesel fuel demands extensive investigation in order to clarify the exhaust emissions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a used vegetable oil as an alternative fuel in a diesel engine in terms of exhaust emissions. The emission concentration of used vegetable oil such as formaldehyde and acrolein is two times than that of diesel fuel. However, since that of alcohol is ten times than that of used vegetable oil and that concentration is very low, it is not a problem for human health.

Preventive Effect of Ginseng Butanol Fraction against Acetaldehyde - Induced Acute Toxicity (아세트알데히드로 유도된 급성독성에 대한 인삼부탄올 분획의 방어작용)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the preventive effect of ginseng on acetaldehyde-induced acute toxicity in mice . Compared to the control group, treatment with acetaldehyde inhibited the hepatic cytosolic xanthine oxidise activity with increase in dose. The inhibition of enzyme activity was not changed after dialysis. Pretreatment with ginseng butanol fraction prevented the inhibition of enzyme activity by acetaldehyde. In conjunction with the our previous results (Yakhak Hoeji, 29, 18 (1985)), these results suggest that the most likely mechanism for the observed preventive effects of ginseng against the acetaldehyde-induced acute toxicity may be the decrease hepatic acetaldehyde level.
