  • Although anthropogenic disturbance of 20 years duration affects benthic habitats, few studies have examined its effects on the macrobenthic communities of a bay. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of environmental variables on the macrobenthic communities after the construction of the Hwaong dike. Macrobenthos were collected at 22 sites using a Smith McIntyre grab (0.1 $m^2$) in August 2007 and February 2008. Total organic content was very low around the Hwaong dike. Sediment grain size increased from the Hwaong dike to the outer bay. In total, 317 species of macrobenthic fauna were collected and the mean density was 1,155 ind. $m^{-2}$, both of which were higher than the results of previous studies. The dominant species, $Hetermastus$ $filiformis$, known to be a potential pollution indicator, was more abundant near the Hwaong dike. Conversely, species sensitive to organic pollution, such as the polychaete $Ampharete$ $arctica$ and the ophiuroid $Amphioplus$ $squamata$, exhibited higher mean densities in areas distant from the dike. A cluster analysis indicated that the macrobenthic community was divided into two distinct groups: group I near the dike and group II in the outer bay, which were affected by sediment grain size and total organic content. This study suggests that variations in sediment grain size and organic content after dike construction are important factors controlling the macrobenthic community in Asan Bay.

  • In order to understand the seasonal characteristics of seawater in Asan Bay, the quality of this water was observed over four seasons form December 2011 to February 2013, and correlations between seawater quality variations and freshwater input were analyzed by a statistical method. The results, based on factor analysis, indicate that the two most important factors in understanding variation are freshwater input (37.7 %) and seawater exchange (24.4 %). Asan-ho and Sapgyo-ho are two major freshwater sources that affect inner (eastern) Asan Bay. Discharged freshwater from the inner bay strongly affects the spatial and temporal distribution of seawater in the bay overall during the summer rainy season. On other hand, water re-suspended from the bottom of the bay overwhelmed the water quality during the dry winter season. In conclusion, seasonal freshwater discharge dominated the water quality of the bay, and, consequently, DIP limited the growth of phytoplankton in the bay.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the benthic polchaete community in the southern area of Kyeonggi Bay, Korea. The species composition was examined in Asan Bay in 1985, the coastal area near Yibug in 1987, the area between Daeranjido and Asan Bay for 1988-1989, and the offshore south of Deogjeogdo in 1992. Polychaetes, the dominant faunal group occupying 57.4% in total density, comprised a total of 124 species with a mean density of 211 indiv.m/SUP -2/. The dominant polychaete was Prionospio sp. (28.8%), followed by Nephtys polybranchia (6.0%), Tharyx sp. (4.8%) Stermaspis scutata (4.4%), Lumbrineris longifolia (3.9%). The Number of species and density were higher in the coastal area near Yibug, Asan Bay and the mouth of Namyang Bay, while lower in the channels of offshore region. The cluster analysis revealed that the study area could be divided into 5 regions, which were distributed serially along the coast from Asan Bay to open sea. Each region sustained its specific Bay, Stermaspis-Heteromastus assemblage from Asan Bay to Daeranjido, Hemipodus assemblage in the channels of offshore, Lumbrineris assemblage on the coastal area o Yibug and Prionospio assemblage in the coastal area south of Yibug. Tharyx-Chone assemblage had the highest species number of 75 spp. and Prionospio assemblage had the highest density of 3,695 indiv.m/SUP -2/ due to the predominance of prionospio sp.. Hemipodus assemblage with the lowest density occupied the largest area in offshore region. The southern Kyeonggi Bay showed higher species number and lower density than the northern Kyeonggi Bay. But the dominant Polychaetes were similar between the southern Bay and the channel regions of the northern Bay.

  • Distribution characteristics of organophosphorous pesticides(OPs) in water and suspended particles were studied in Asan Bay, Korea, from June 2004 to October 2005. 28 organophosphorous pesticides could be detected in Asan Bay during this study. The most commonly and abundantly measured OPs in the surface waters were IBP (max=$6,343.7ng\;l^{-1}$). DDVP, diazionon, ethoprophos and methidathion were also observed at relatively high concentrations. Their maximum concentrations exceeded $100ng\;l^{-1}$ in almost every month. Malathion, mevinphos, ph orate and chlorfenvinphos were also detected at relatively high concentrations. Many OPs more frequently appeared in summer than in winter due to the intensive application of pesticides in summer months. The concentration of OPs generally decreased with increasing distance from the mouth of Asan Bay. This result implies progressive dilution of these pesticides in the marine environment. Measured concentrations of diazinon were well below $20,000ng\;l^{-1}$ which is a limit set by the seawater quality standard of Korea. The concentrations of malathion and parathion in the surface waters of Asan Bay did not exceed the seawater quality standard of Korea($250,000\;and\;60,000ng\;l^{-1}$ respectively). OPs adsorbed on suspended particles were also studied. DDVP, phorate, stirofos, EPN, azinphos-methyl and IBP had higher adsorption capacity onto suspended particles than other pesticides. Calculated pesticide-particle adsorption coefficient($K_d-particle$) for samples collected in Asan Bay were closely related to the reported pesticides-soil adsorption coefficient ($K_d-soil$).

  • In order to identify the change of tidal characteristics on average in the Asan Bay due to the construction of the Hwaong (Namyang Bay) tidal barrier (HTB), the tide data at Pyongtack (PT) and Anheung (AH) for the periods from 1993 to 2006 were analyzed using the harmonic analysis method, and major and shallow water tidal constituents were compared. The semidiurnal tidal amplitudes at PT increased while those at AH decreased after the tidal barrier construction. In particular, the amplitudes at PT increased abruptly during the period of $2002{\sim}2003$ when HTB was completed. On the other hand, the amplitudes of the diurnal tides at PT and AH showed minimal change. This suggests that the tidal characteristics change in the Asan Bay may be related to the construction of HTB. The cause of this change is different from either blocking the tidal wave propagation by the Keum River tidal barrier or removing 'choking effect' by the Yeongsan River tidal barrier. The $M_4/M_2$ ratio increased and their phase difference decreased after the completion of HTB. Accordingly, these changes may result in increase of tidal range, decrease of the flood duration and increase of the flood current velocity, inducing more sediments into the Asan Bay.

  • A modeling system for three-dimensional flow (FEMOS) has been developed and applied to simulate the tidal currents of Asan Bay. The system can consider tidal flats changing with time and uses a finite element method that can adapt coastline change effectively. The simulation results for Asan Bay with large tidal flats, shallow water depth and high tidal range showed good agreements with the observed currents of long-term variations at the medium layer and short-term variations of vertical profiles. Based on the simulated tidal currents, the horizontal distributions of bottom shear stress were calculated and showed close relation with the change of bottom topography. The system can be used widely to study coastal circulation in the coastal region with complex geography.

  • Surgical methods and associated precision systems have been developed, but surgical procedures that require precise location and fine manipulation of the lesion remain a limitation. The combination of precision robot manipulation technology and 3D medical image navigation technology overcomes the limitations of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and enables a more stable and successful operation. Surgical robots are surgical robots such as da Vince, and surgical robots using industrial robotic arms. There are various developments and researches of medical robots. In recent medical robot development, a new type of surgical robot based on an industrial robot arm capable of easily replacing the end effector according to the user's needs is being actively developed at home and abroad. Therefore, in this study, we developed safety and performance evaluation guideline for micro - surgical robots based on open robot platform using general purpose robot arm to help quality control of the medical device.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate oncology nurses' professional quality of life and its correlations with job satisfaction and job stress in a tertiary hospital in Seoul, South Korea. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was utilized to investigate 210 oncology nurses from various oncology and hemato-oncology units. Professional quality of life (ProQOL), which is conceptualized with three sub-dimensions (compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress), job satisfaction, job stress, demographic and work-related variables were measured. Results: The participants were all women, with the mean age of 28.4. The participants with high ProQOL was only 14.8%, and 75.3% and 77.6% of the participants reported a moderate to high level of burnout and secondary traumatic stress respectively. Job satisfaction, age, and the total years of nursing practice have positive correlations with compassion satisfaction. Also, compassion satisfaction was significantly different according to age group, work units, the level of education, nursing positions, and the years of practice. Conclusion: Since the level of professional quality of life among oncology nurses was relatively low, the program for oncology nurses to improve compassion satisfaction and to decrease compassion fatigue needs to be developed.
