Development of Positive Behavior Support Model for Children in Child Care Institution (양육시설 아동을 위한 보편적 긍정적 행동지원 모형개발)

  • This study was designed to develop a positive behavior support model for children in child care institutions. For this purpose, a demand survey for PBS was conducted with 55 child care institution staff members. 76% of the respondents responded that PBS is needed to prevent problem behavior and can be a good alternative for personality education, and approximately 70% responded that they are willing to implement PBS. The specifications of the model are suggested as follows. First, the preparation step would consist of establishing a support team, educating staff members about PBS, selecting expected behaviors, assessing the current baseline behavior, and setting up a universal PBS environment. The application step would consist of instructing social skills, implementing reinforcement, personal goal-setting and assessing behavior, educating trouble-making students, and monitoring. Finally, at the outcome assessment period, measuring the change in target behavior from the pre-intervention to the post-intervention stage, change in social skills and academic achievement, and social validity is suggested. It is expected that application of this model to children in child care institution will decrease problem behaviors of students, enhance desirable behaviors, and boost the staff members' efficacy.

Study on the Differences of the Government Social Support for Unmarried Mother Child-rearing between at the Home and in the Facilities (재가와 시설의 양육미혼모 정부지원 차이에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate differences of governmental parts in social supports for unmarried mothers at home and those at facilities and to look at policy alternatives. Despite of the rising number of unmarried child rearing mothers in recent years, the governmental supports are not sufficient enough to aid even the most basic sustenance. The research on the governmental supports shows that unmarried child-rearing mothers at home were more aged, more employed, more educated and had children of more month ages than those at facilities. Single mothers at facilities were getting more governmental supports excluding crisis support and paternity test than those at home who appeared to be experiencing more difficulties. Based on the results from this research work, more realistic governmental policies are proposed to help a stable settlement of unmarried child-rearing mothers.

Social Adjustment and Influential Factors in Children Living in Child Care Institutions (아동양육시설 아동의 사회적 적응과 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify and assess influential social adjustment factors in children who live in child care institutions. To do this, correlation and regression analysis in Structural Equation Model were carried out on 326 children from 12 child care institutions. The findings are as follows; Social adjustment in children living in child care institutions were deemed better based on higher self-esteem, more maintenance of contact with parents, more positive caring environment within institutions, higher support of fellow school children, and more pro-social charactes of school peers. The influence of each variables on social adjustment was indicated to be highest in institutions with a caring environment. In conclusion, self-esteem, pro-social charactes of school peers, support of fellow school children, and contact with parents (in that order) were deemed most influential to social adjustment.

Differences in Factors of Subjective Well-Being between Children who are raised at their own homes and those raised at the residential institutions (시설아동과 일반아동의 행복요인 차이)

  • This study focused on differences in factors of subjective well-being between children who are raised at their own homes and those raised at the residential institutions. This study used two kinds of data sets, one from survey on subjective well-being of children in residential care supported by National Research Foundation of Korea, the other from survey on children's subjective well-being in Korea conducted by Social welfare research center in Seoul National University and Save the Children Korea. The results are as follows; There are no significant difference statistically between children raised at their own homes and children raised at residential institutions in children's subjective well-being, satisfaction with him/herself, and satisfaction with school. However, there is higher satisfaction with family in children raised at their own homes. On the other hand, there is higher satisfaction with community in children raised at residential institutions. There are difference factors effect on children's subjective well-being between the two groups. Most of all, satisfaction with him/herself is very important factor to improve children's subjective well-being in residential care.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the living environment design of orphanage based on universal design. The 3 orphanages which were rebuilded recently was selected and evaluated by checklists. The checklists which are based on 'Universal Design Principles' are consist of 120 items. The major results are summarized as follows: 1) The items related to safety were insufficient such as separation of pedestrian passage, rounded edge. 2) The items related to accessibility were high grade such as width of corridor, curb height. 3) Private zones for sleep, study and storage are needed more and living room is needed more furnitures for activities to increase friendship in the family of orphanage. The results will be expected to make contributions to developing orphanage environment design based on universal design, to understanding the nature of universal design paradigm.

The effect of notification disposition in the current juvenile justice system from the perspective of institutionalized children's welfare (시설보호아동의 복지 관점에서 본 소년법상 통고제도)

  • Taking the perspective of children's welfare, this study aimed at critically analyzing the system of notification disposition which institutionalized children have experienced. Notification disposition is a juvenile justice process that, when a child (10 th 18 years old ) has been delinquent or is at risk for delinquency, is initiated without investigation or prosecution procedures by direct notification to a judge from the caregivers, school principals, chief probation officers, or directors of child care institutions. The data used in the analysis included case records of probation offices, and court sentencing documents of juvenile protective dispositions. Results showed that notification cases were initiated by directors of child shelters/care institutions. The most common reasons of notification were theft, runaway, physical violence, drinking, and smoking. Furthermore, there were more controversial reasons, such as "bad influence on another institutionalized children", "showing no remorse", "no sense of guilt"and "challenge of rearing in institutions" Based on the results, we discussed three problematic aspects of the direct notification system by directors of childcare institutions : (1) too much reliance on the judicature judgment of juvenile court; (2) less stability of the judicial status of notified children, and (3) inadequacies of the notifying eligibility for directors of child care institutions.

A Study Evaluating a Program for the Interaction between Children in Institutional Care and their Original Families (시설아동과 원가족 상호작용 프로그램 평가 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the program for enhancing the interaction capacity between the child care institutions and the original family (associate) and propose a program suitable for the child care institutions. The program was conducted at two institution located in Seoul and Cheongju, and the process evaluation and outcome evaluation were conducted. First, the problems that appeared in the process evaluation were recruiting and maintaining participants. As a result of the satisfaction of each program, it was found that the satisfaction of the program sharing the various experiences or sharing the small daily life was high, and it was positive for the improvement of the relationship. Parents showed improvement in the post -test rather than the pre-test. Through qualitative assessment, positive evaluations were made in programs where the family participated in activities that could not be done together in the camp or everyday life, rather than just one-time activity programs.

Emotional Availability of working mothers and their 24~48 month-olds in child care centers (취업모와 자녀의 정서적 가용성에 관련된 변인 연구:보육시설에 다니는 24-48개월 아동을 중심으로)

  • The purposes of this study were to explore the level of emotional availability of working mothers and their 24~48month-olds (67 dyads: 33 boys and 34 girls) in child care centers and to examine the relationship between the mother-child emotional availability and the related variables of working mothers and their children. Emotional Availability Scales (EA, 3rd edition) developed by Biringen, Z., Robinson, J., & and Emde, R.N. (1998) was used. Mother's work-family conflict, maternal parenting stress, and maternal depression, temperament of child, personal background were measured. The results of this study were as follows: The level of mother-child emotional availability was above in the middle level. There were significant differences in the mother-child emotional availability by maternal educational level and family income level, and significant negative correlation between maternal parenting stress and mother-child emotional availability. There was significant difference in the mother-child emotional availability by the starting point of child care experience. Mother-child emotional availability were significantly explained by family income level, maternal parenting stress, and the starting point of child care experience.

Running to Change Prejudice into Hope - A Qualitative Case Study on Academically talented Children in Residential Care - (편견을 희망으로 바꾸는 달리기 - 학업성취 우수 시설보호아동에 관한 질적 사례연구 -)

  • We usually expect that children in residential care are not able to have excellent academic achievement, even though their school achievement in adolescence is crucial as a part of whole lifespan development. The purpose of this study is to carefully understand characteristics and experiences of only a few academically talented children in residential care and to find out the practical suggestion to support the academic performance of children in residential care. For this purpose, we had interviewed eight children in depth and analyzed the data using a qualitative case study method. As a result, we found a total of 21 subcategories and 5 categories. The categories included that 'always being faithful despite being not fast', 'believing myself when I face limitations', 'conflict in high support and high expectation', 'sometimes refusing to support on me, but I am leaning on my mind', 'relieving anxiety by studying'. In conclusion, we found that the central theme of 'running to change prejudice into hope' were found through the cases with excellent academic achievement. Based on the results, we suggested the guidelines to consider when developing and providing the academic support services for children in residential care.
