  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare the quality of nursing care as perceived by registered nurses and mothers of hospitalized children in South Korea. Methods: This was a descriptive study that recruited 70 mothers of hospitalized children and 70 nurses in pediatric units in university hospitals as participants. The quality of pediatric nursing care was measured using importance and performance scores for 19 items describing various elements of nursing care. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent t-test. Results: The hospitalized children mothers'mean importance scores were significantly higher than those of the nurses (t=2.94, p=.004). However, there were no significant differences in the mean performance scores of nurses and mothers (t=0.91, p=.363) or between nurses'and mothers'perceptions of quality of nursing care, with the exception of a significant difference for the quality of explanations (t=2.78, p=.006). The quality of explanations was assessed more positively by nurses than by mothers. Conclusion: This study suggests that when developing strategies to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric wards, ensuring that pediatric nurses provide detailed explanations should be considered as a way to improve the quality of nursing care in pediatric units.

The collected data using Protocol of Pediatric Peripheral Intravenous Infusion of Choi et. al.(2016) and Core Basic Nursing skills & Protocol ; Intravenous Infusion of Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education(2017) were analyzed using SPSS 21.0. Nursing performance of pediatric nurses was the lowest in education, and the highest in side effect management. There were significant differences in subarea of nursing performance according to general characteristics. There was a positive correlation between education and nursing performance(r=.486, p<.001), and factors influencing nursing performance were education(${\beta}=.472$), working department(${\beta}=.216$) and marital status(${\beta}=.169$)(adj $R^2=0.314$, p<.001). These results can be used as basic data on nursing educational program on peripheral intravenous catheterization for pediatric nurses after repeated study by expanding the number of subjects.

  • Since 1990, descriptive studies about the concept of client advocacy have been published in the health journals. However, empirical studies of the concept are still lacking. There are not enough bases to apply the concept of client advocacy in nursing practice. The purpose of this paper is to encourage empirical research about client advocacy by clarification of the concept and to discusses application of the theory in child healthcare. The literature was reviewed that empirical studies on client advocacy conducted after the year 2000. The changing trends in the client advocacy concept was examined; it was changed from the philosophical concept to nursing action and changed from individual advocacy to collective advocacy, with the rise of the self advocacy concept. The research trends on client advocacy evolves from descriptive study to quasi-experimental study and instrument development study, with diversification and expansion of research methods, advocates, clients and settings. The advocacy role of the nurse in child healthcare is significant due to the child's lack of self determination ability. In ill child care, the application of individual advocacy is potent, while in healthy child care, collective advocacy, policy advocacy, and social advocacy is effective.

  • Purposes: The purposes of this study were to examine knowledge related to child abuse, attitudes toward child abuse, and intention to report child abuse and to identify the predictors of nurses' intention to report child abuse. Method: A descriptive-correlational study was conducted. Participants were 171 nurses who worked in the pediatric or emergency rooms in G city. Self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, t-test or ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Nurses had a limited knowledge related to child abuse. Nurses had negative attitudes toward child discipline, were inclined to punish the abuser, and had positive attitudes about professional responsibility for reporting child abuse. Nurses perceived difficulty in the actual behavior of reporting child abuse. Nurses' intention to report child abuse was predicted by nurses' attitudes to professional responsibility for reporting child abuse. The results of the analysis, only emotional labor and task satisfaction among the components of the professional self-concept became statistically significant results. The relationship between professional pride and task satisfaction have a significant effect on turnover. The relationship only of surface acting and turnover between those of emotional labor and turnover became significant. Based on the research results, it should be preferred to nurse specialists in the women's hospital, in order to lower the turnover of nurses. Management strategies of the organization should be sought to improve operational feeling of satisfaction, and Also the approach should be applied to ease the negativity of surface acting.
