  • Soil nailing is used as a method of slope stabilization and excavation support. The design method of soil nail are based on experience or assumption of interaction between soil and reinforcement. Most design methods simply considers the tension of reinforcement for analysis of slope stabilization. Soil nails interact with soils under combined loading of shear and tension. Jewell & Pedley suggested a design equation of shear force with bending stiffness and discussed that the magnitude of the maximum shear force is small in comparison with the maximum axal force. However, they have used a very conservative limiting bearing stress on nails. This paper discusses that the shear strength of soil nails should not be disregarded with proper bearing stresses on nails. The modified FHWA design method was proposed by considering shear forces on nails with bending stiffness.

  • This paper describes a new numerical analysis technique in stability analysis for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails. The installing effect of pressure grouted soil nails can be simulated in this method. Shear strength reduction method associated with finite element method is used for slope stability analysis. Factors of safety for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails are compared with those for a natural slope and a slope reinforced with gravity grouted soil nails in order to investigate their reinforcing effects. More than 50% increase in the factor of safety is obtained when the slope is reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails compared to the one with gravity grouted soil nails. The reinforcing effects of pressure grouted soil nails become obvious with increase in their length. The reinforcing mechanism of the pressure grouted soil nails for the slope stability can be explained by the slope failure surface expanding gradually toward the backfill. The increased stability of the slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails results mainly from their improved pull-out resistance.

  • LEM (Limit Equilibrium Method) based programs are commonly used for the designs of soil nailing as a slope reinforcement. However, there is a drawback that the interaction between ground and soil nailing is not properly reflected in those programs, which needs to be solved. For economical constructions and designs, research is also required on the support pattern of soil nailing. In this study, therefore, reinforcement effects of soil nailing were compared and analyzed by performing finite difference analyses which could properly consider the interaction between ground and soil nailing. As a result, when the angle from slope to nail is $90^{\circ}$, failure slip surface becomes the largest and thus the factor of safety becomes maximum.

  • In the early 1990s, soil nailing was first introduced as method of reinforcement for the slope stability and ground excavation, and as its application was increased the improved soil nailing was also developed. Most recently used for grout soil nailing greatly improve the methods and techniques for self-improvement techniques are classified as soil nailing. As the representative for the grout pressure method to improve the join method pressure grouting and improved method for the self-drilled soil nailing, removable soil nailing, upward soil nailing combined with horizontal drainage system. This paper is to compare upward soil nailing combined with horizontal drainage system with downward direction of the soil nailing. In order to study the limit equilibrium slope stability analysis and comparison with factor of safage, excavation for the vertical displacement for comparison with continuous analysis. According to this study, safage factor is decreased considerably using limit equilibrium analysis and makes no odds for the horizontal displacement when soil nail was installed upward.

  • Soil nailing system can be mentioned to a method of supporting as the shear strength of in-situ soils is increased by passive inclusions. In the general soil nailing system, facing walls are used in two kind of a lattice concrete block or a cast in placed concrete wall. A case of lattice concrete blocks is used in slow slopes greater than 1(V):0.7(H). Also, a case of a cast in placed concrete wall is used in steep slopes less than 1(V):0.5(H). The cast in placed concrete walls are constructed to 30 cm thick together with a shotcrete facing. In this study, the assembling soil nailing method as a new soil nailing system will be proposed. This method is assembly construction using precast concrete panels with 20 cm thick. So, the ability of construction and the quality of facings can be improved more than a conventional soil nailing system. This method can be obtained the effects that a global slope stability increase, as precast concrete panels are immediately put on cutting face after excavating a slope. In this study, confining effects of concrete panels using the assembling soil nailing system were found out by large scaled load tests. In the tests, the load-settlement relationship to an assembling soil nailing system due to the stiff facings as concrete panels appeared to be better than a typical soil nailing system with shotcrete facings.

  • In this study, the tests were carried out for the behavior according to method of constrained nail head of slope reinforced with soil nail under dynamic loading, by using shaking table. Shaking table tests were carried out by applying Hachinohe seismic wave having the long-period characteristics and Ofunato seismic wave having short-period characteristics, as changing constrained and unconstrained condition of nail head, and so on. Failure mode, ground acceleration characteristics, vertical displacement and horizontal displacement of slope were compared and analyzed on the basis of results obtained from the test. Results of carrying out shaking table test showed that both short-period wave and long-period wave had large effects on slope, and constraint of nail head was found to have large shear resistance for dynamic load. And it was confirmed that stability of slope under seismic loading was largely improved by constrained head of soil nail.

  • In this paper, a numerical comparison of predictions by limit equilibrium analysis and finite difference analysis is presented for slope/soil-nail system. Special attention is given to the coupled analysis based on the explicit-finite-difference code, FLAC 2D. To this end, an internal routine (FISH) was developed to calculate a factor of safety for a soil nail slope according to shear strength reduction method. The case of coupled analyses was performed for soil nails in slope in which the soil nails response and slope stability are considered simultaneously. In this study, by using these methods, the failure surfaces and factors of safety were compared and analyzed in several cases, such as toe, middle and top of the slope, respectively. Furthermore, the coupled method based on shear strength reduction method was verified by the comparison with other analysis results.

  • In this study, the applicability of geotextile mesh soil nails on slopes was evaluated by numerical analysis to reduce environmental problems which a general soil nailing might produce and to improve its economical efficiency and construction convenience. To this end, in situ pull-out tests were conducted for both general soil nail and geotextile mesh soil nail and their pull-out characteristics were analyzed. Also, finite difference method was used to verify the suitability of numerical simulation. Parameters for nail and ground conditions were selected and sensitivity analysis was performed for the evaluation of slope stability. In addition, analysis was performed by limit equilibrium method which is widely used for slope stability analysis in practice. As a result, if the nail diameter was same, there is no big difference between geotextile mesh soil nails and general soil nails in terms of slope stability. Therefore it can be expected that geotextile mesh soil nails could be effective for slope reinforcement since they could keep a slope as stable as general soil nails and give better economical efficiency and construction convenience than general soil nails.
