The air anions generated by potted Cymbidium spp., Cymbidium Meglee 'Ms Taipei' Dendrobium phalaenopsis, Oncidium spp., Phalaenopsis spp., and Sedirea japonicum were investigated, and changes of air anion emission were measured as affected by volume rates of potted orchids put in chambers. The volume rates of 20, 40, 60, and 80% for potted Cymbidium spp. and 25, 50, 75, and 100% for potted Cymbidium Meglee 's Taipei'were used in closed chambers. Air anion emission by Cymbidium spp. ($332/cm^3$) and Cymbidium 's Taipei'($323/cm^3$) was the greatest among the tested six orchid species, followed by Dendrobium phalaenopsis ($250/cm^3$), Oncidium spp. ($203/cm^3$), Sedirea japonicum ($119/cm^3$), and Phalaenopsis spp. ($77/cm^3$). Air anion emission by Cymbidium spp. and Cymbidium Meglee 'Ms Taipei'g increased by 40% and 75%, respectively, and thereafter slightly decrease. Therefore, the volume rates of potted plants put in closed chambers should be less than 40% to compare with species and 30% seems most pertinent considering increasing relative humidity in closed chambers. Air anions were generated the greatest amount by potted Cymbidium genera among the orchids tested.

Cymbidium is one of perennial herbs belonging to the Orchidaceae and is known as a medicinal plant. However, its scientific data are insufficient. The purpose of this study is to extract from root and stem of Cymbidium, to investigate the biological effects of them. Cymbidium antibacterial effects of the extracts were performed by antibacterial test against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Staphylococcus saphrophyticus (S. saprophyticus), Proteus vulgaris (P. vulgaris) and Klebsiella pneumonia (K. pneumonia). Antioxidant effects of the extracts were carried out by DPPH radical scavenging. Total phenolic contents were also determined. Moreover, Cell viability of extracts against MTT assay was cell viability against HepG2 cell and also measures Cholesterol adsorptivity of extracts. In this study, the extracts inhibited the growth of bacteria. Particularly Cymbidium root extracts by only ethanol extraction showed highest antimicrobial effect against S. aureus. The Cymbidium stem extracts by both ethanol extraction and sonication for 1 hour had higher antioxidant activites as well as total phenolic contents. Cell cytotoxicity showed higher than $50{\mu}g/mL$. Cholesterol adsorptivity showed lower than 20%. These results suggest that the Cymbidium might be a source of anti-bacterials and anti-oxidants.

Skeletal muscle atrophy can be defined as a decrease in or a disease of the muscle tissue, or as a disorder of the nerves that control the muscle, through injury or lack of use. This condition is associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in various muscular disorders. Exposure to ROS induces muscle atrophy through several biological factors, such as SOD1 and HSP70. We found that cymbidium root extract reduced the $H_2O_2$-induced viability loss in C2C12 myoblasts and inhibited apoptosis. In addition, we showed that the cymbidium root extract increased the expression of HSP70 and decreased the expression of SOD1 in the $H_2O_2$-induced C2C12 myoblasts. These results suggest that cymbidium root extract might have therapeutic value in reducing ROS-induced muscle atrophy.
This experiment was conducted to clarify the effect of waste tire chip on the growth and nutrient content of Cymbidium Pine Clash 'Moon Venus'. There were no significant differences between bark only medium and mixed medium in leaf and stem growth. But in both medium and large size chip only, the leaf and stem growth decreased remarkably. The total number of roots, new roots and root length had similar tendency as in leaf and stem growth. In medium and large tire chip only, the decayed roots increased. There were no significant differences between bark only medium and mixed medium in total sugar, starch, content of chrolophyll, N, P and K, but decreased significantly in both medium and large size chip only.
Bark is a general medium for potted Cymbidium in Korea, but it is difficult to shake off or eliminate the medium from the roots before exporting the potted plants. This working process can injure the roots and then deteriorate plant marketability. This study was carried out to select the optimum medium easier to eliminate from the roots instead of bark and the optimum amount of applied fertilizer to improve the plant growth. Cymbidium young plants 'Honey Hot' and 'Desert Look' were planted in pots with bark, cocochip, and peatmoss. The plants were treated with 2, 4, and 6 g of slow release fertilizer. The plant growth characteristics were investigated in the first and second years during production period of three years. The medium characteristics and mineral nutrient content of the leaves were also examined in the second year. In the first year, the plant growth of 'Desert Look' was improved in all peatmoss treatments more than bark. 'Honey Hot' showed the highest plant growth values in the bark treatment. In the second year, the plant growth of the two cultivars was improved in peatmoss. Cocochip treatments showed the lower plant growth values than bark and peatmoss in the first and second year. There was no significant difference among fertilizer amounts in all the media. The higher CEC values of peatmoss medium resulted to higher capacity to hold more nutrients than bark, and the nutrient retention of the peatmoss improved the plant growth. The higher K and Ca contents in the leaves would contribute to improve the plant growth. Consequently, it would be possible to use peatmoss instead of bark for Cymbidium young plants, but there must be always attention to appropriately water the medium and manage the moisture.
Surveys were conducted on the occurrence of nematodes in the root systems of 1-3-year old Cymbidium hybida Swartz cultivated for export in Korea. The most frequently detected plant-parasitic nematode was Ditylenchus sp. with 4.7, 43.7, and 49.7/200 cc growth medium in 1, 2, and 3 year-old cymbidiums, respectively. And the densities of non-parasitic nematodes, dorylaimids, were 35.3, 70.5, and 155.8/200 cc growth medium in 1, 2, and 3-year-old cymbidiums, respectively. Three-year-old cymbidiums collected from Siheung, Ansan, and Gimpo had low densities of Aphelenchus sp. and Aphelenchoides sp. with under 40 individuals/pot, and the dorylaimid densities were 56-824/pot. To evaluate the effects of nematicides on Ditylenchus sp. in cymbidium, Emamectin benzoate EC, Fosthiazate SL, and Cadusafos CS were tested at two farms in Ansan and Gimpo. Emamectin benzoate EC showed control effects of 75.7 and 89.5%, whereas Fosthiazate SL and Cadusafos CS showed 27.2 and 65.3% and 30.1 and 90.5% control effects in the tests.
This study was conducted to determine injury symptoms of orchids by sulfur dioxide gases, three orchid plants (Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium, Oncidium) were exposed to sulfur dioxide gas in an enclosed growth chambers. Sulfur dioxide gases treatments consist of five different concentrations (0, 5, 10 25, and 50 ppm) and plant exposure of 18 hours with $25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ air temperature and $50{\pm}5%$ relative humidity. SPAD values for chlorophyll content and percent leaf injury as well as leaf ion exudation were measured before and after the gas treatments. Phalaenopsis leaves showed 23.3% leaf injury at 10 ppm sulfur dioxide gas, whereas Cymbidium and Oncidium showed 4.0 and 4.4% leaf injury under 25 ppm or less, respectively. Major leaf injury symptoms appeared as initial water-soaking under side of the leaf, followed by rapidly progressed complete leaf discolorization or chlorosis. As the gas concentration increased, the SPAD value decreased while ion exudation increased. Cymbidium and Oncidium were resistant to sulfur dioxide gas than Phalaenopsis.

A new Cymbidium cultivar 'White Princess' was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) in 2005. A cross was made in 1995 between 'Cymbidium 2113', light purple colored petal and medium plant sized variety, and 'Lucky Rainbow Randevous', a dark purple petal with red lip and large type variety. The ninety progenies were obtained after planting and acclimatization in green house. In 2000, a line (9526747) was selected and multipliticed after test of its flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growing habit. After evaluation trial for two growing seasons, the selected line was named as 'White Princess'. The 'White Princess' has white petals (WN 155A) with red lip (RP59D) color and large sized leaves, and flowers (leaf length is about 88 cm and flower diameter is about 8 cm) with semi-erect flower stalks. Blooming started from December to January in optimal culture conditions. High temperature (more than $30^{\circ}C$) and low light intensity(less than 10,000Lux) should be avoided for the appropriate growth.
Cymbidium is one of the largest genus in the orchid family and a number of hybrids have been bred in the world. During mass-propagating the Cymbidium "Dongyang" using the meristem culture technology, a useful leaf mutant was selected from the protocom like bodies. The new Cymbidium variety by in vitro mutangesis from "Dongyang" was named as 'Daegook' in 1998. Compared to Dongyang, "Daegook" mutant has white or yellow stripes along the margin of leaves and flowers. The plant length of "Daegook" was shorter than "Dongyang" and the mean length and width of leaf in "Daegook" was 40 cm and 1.6 cm, respectively. The new variety, "Daegook", is expected to be a popular Cymbidium variety among consumer as a ornamental orchid mutant for pot culture by its fine and unique stripes and growth characters.
