  • This paper presents the results of the first interlaboratory comparison of ambient particles measurement conducted by 5 laboratories under the framework of Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment(KOSAE) on the May of 1998 in Seoul. Collection of particles less than 10$mu extrm{m}$(PM10) was carried out by two different types of PM10 sampler, and their concentration reported by three laboratories ranged from 36.2~56.05$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. Analyses of chemical composition of particles collected by each lab were performed by the destructive and nondestructive instrumental methods. Statistical analysis of the measurement results could not be carried out because a comprehensive QA/QC had not been applied before experiment. The importance of QA/QC as well as the performance of QA/QC for the measurement of PM10 was discussed in detail.

  • Salt wedge into the river from the sea or fresh water flume (fresh wedge) in the ocean from the sea has density current characteristics. However, when temperature and salinity simultaneously determine the density of wedges, one of salinity and temperature can distributed in the reversed profiles against gravity, even though the density profile is stable. In this case, the double diffusive process is critical in determining mixing rate. The present work studies relative contribution of shear driven mechanical mixing component and double diffusive layering process, when warm salty denser water is introduced into the cold fresh lighter water column. Laboratory experiment releases warm salty denser water into cold fresh lighter water controlling discharge amount to achieve the steady state of density current. When longitudinal density rate becomes 15, the released amount ratio of salt and heat changes sharply and in the releasing point, vigorous mixing occurs with increase of discharged amount due to double diffusion. Double diffusion distabilizes gravitational stability and enhances the mixing rate up to $6{\times}10$ times at the lower density ratio comparing to the higher density ratio.

  • Camellia oil refined under laboratory conditions had a lower content of linoleic acid, higher oleic acid and lower iodine value than soybean oil. The oxidative stability of camellia oil from POV and AV was much higher than that of soybean oil during autoxidation. The acid values of both oils increased with frequency of frying whereas iodine value decreased. The significant decrease of iodine value of soybean oil compared to camellia oil is thought to be because more double bonds are present in soybean oil than in camellia oil. The result of sensory evaluation for taste, color, odor and total acceptance of potato chips fried with camellia, soy-bean and corn oil revealed that the potato chips prepared from camellia oil was the most favorable.

  • Wetlands can transform or remove pollutants from water body, such as nitrogen, phosphate, and organics. Many researches were conducted in relation to uptake process by aquatic plants in wetlands. However, water purification processes in wetlands are the results of physical, chemical and biological, especially microbiological reactions. As such, understanding on microbial processes is of great importance. In this study, we used pondor marsh-type wetland microcosms for investigating the water purification capacity and microbial functions, namely, extracellular enzyme activities, nitrification and denitrification. In a pond system, removal efficiencies of $NO_3{^-}$ and $PO{_4}^{3-}$ were 96% and 100 % respectively, while those in a marsh system were 94%, 100% respectively. These high removal efficiencies appeared to be caused by high adsorption ability to soils and microbial functions in wetland.

  • The usefulness of media representations for assessing normative standards depends in part on how accurately media reflect "on-the-ground" resource conditions. This study compared encounter standards based on still and moving pictures to assess movement effects. The study location was the Jungmoeri area of Mudeungsan Provincial Park (MPP) in Korea. A total of 50 college students participated in a laboratory experiment where they evaluated still and moving pictures constructed using Photoshop and Flash computer programs. For the maximum acceptable number (MAN), however, there was no significant difference of ratings between still and moving pictures, and the overall encounter norm curves were nearly identical. There were some "method findings" for ordering effects and percent of people moving, but for a resource manager developing standards there was no advantage to the more complex logistics of using moving pictures to assess this particular impact. The trade-offs of using more sophisticated media are discussed, and more research is needed to further explore factors such as movement of sound in evaluation of other resource conditions.

  • This paper was intended to examine the function of emotion that affects the accuracy of statements in the context of eyewitness testimony. The main emotion theories and concepts introduced in previous studies examining the relation between testimony accuracy and negative emotions were examined based on the characteristics of the research method. The results were presented in the order of emotion definition, emotion inducing method, and emotion measurement method. Specifically, the definition of emotion was described based on studies on negative emotions, arousal, stress, and mood. The emotion inducing method was mainly described based on images, virtual reality, and staged events designed by researchers, which have been mainly used in laboratories. Emotion measurement methods were described with respect to the self-report, behavioral checklist, and psychophysiology. In addition, the emotional approach for objective and scientific repeated verification, the importance of effective experimental design and appropriate scientific memory test, and the need for individual difference control were discussed. This paper reinterprets the contradictions shown by previous research by systematically structuring the function of emotion that affects the accuracy of testimony. It was meaningful to provide a frame for comparative analysis of related studies. Ultimately, it is expected that such knowledge will be used as basic documents for judging the reliability of eyewitness testimony in a legal context.

  • SAE J2601 and SAE J2799, the communication protocols between a hydrogen refueling station and a fuel cell electric vehicle, only cover hydrogen charging. In this paper, we measure the hydrogen detection, current, and voltage of a fuel cell electric vehicle and transmit the sensor data to the hydrogen refueling station by changing the WiFi protocol. A small-scale laboratory model was built using Raspberry Pi for sensing, controlling, and transmitting sensor data of a fuel cell electric vehicle. The sensor data was stored in the database of the hydrogen refueling station, and a dashboard was configured using Grafana to analyze the stored data. When hydrogen is detected, the dispenser valve of the hydrogen refueling station is locked. Then, we measured the average transmission delay according to the WiFi protocol. The results showed that IEEE 802.11a is the most suitable WiFi protocol for transmitting sensor data between the hydrogen refueling station and the fuel cell electric vehicle.

  • This study was conducted to examine the utilization of immunohistochemistry using the bovine anti-brucella immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody in the diagnosis of brucellosis and to develop a functional biomarker relation for the progress of the disease. Anti-brucella IgG antibody was purified from the affected bovine serum using an affinity chromatography. We performed our investigation on 17 cases of brucellosis and 19 control cases with negative Rose-Bengal test results. Our purified anti-brucella IgG antibody showed a positive immunoreactivity in cytoplasmic hepatocytes of the centrilobular region, and glomeruli and tubular epithelium of the kidney. The protein pattern of the affected liver versus control was analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis, showing a different expression pattern of proteins between the two. Five protein spots were up-regulated and another were five down-regulated in the brucellosis liver. Significant upregulaton of catalase and 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase might be due to a compensatory reaction in response to the endotoxic shock of brucella. In conclusion, the anti-brucella IgG antibody may be a good tool for discriminative diagnosis of the affected tissues and proteomics data suggest new target proteins underlying a possible pathogenic mechanism of brucellosis.

  • The purpose of the study is to explore the personal experiences and efforts of science teachers, who have worked in science core schools over the years, in order to evaluate the educational effects and implications of science core school policies. To achieve this purpose, we conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve individual science teachers who have operated programs and curriculum at science core schools. The results provided three case studies presenting how the teachers operated curriculum and how they perceived the benefits of science core schools and identified some commonalities in their experiences and perceptions through cross-case discussions. Three teachers in case studies presented different teaching orientations for science core schools, but they positively perceived its benefits and were very satisfied with the school environment and financial supports from government even though they had more burdens on work. In cross-case analysis among 12 teachers, the teachers commonly presented their passion and enthusiasm for organizing and implementing various extra-curriculum science activities. They believed that such efforts contributed to encouraging their students to consider their careers in science and engineering fields in college. And the differentiated school program has increased reputation and preference for the school from local parents and students. In addition, they felt that these efforts brought their own growth and professional development as science teachers.

  • In order to build a general model of a high-throughput uranium electrorefining process according to the electrode configuration, numerical analysis was conducted using the COMSOL Multiphysics V5.3 electrodeposition module with Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) interfaces. The generated model was validated by comparing a current density-potential curve according to the distance between the anode and cathode and the electrode array, using a lab-scale (1kg U/day) multi-electrode electrorefiner made by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The operating temperature was $500^{\circ}C$ and LiCl-KCl eutectic with 3.5wt% $UCl_3$ was used for molten salt. The efficiency of the uranium electrorefining apparatus was improved by lowering the cell potential as the distance between the electrodes decreased and the anode/cathode area ratio increased. This approach will be useful for constructing database for safety design of high throughput spent nuclear fuel electrorefiners.
