  • The purpose of this research is to investigate service item to develop archived VDS(Vehicle Detecting System) data user services. Through the review of related studies and literature and investigation of the current application status of the vehicle detector data, the service item from the historical detector data were identified. The relative importance of the identified service item was measured based on the application purpose, usage and frequency of application.

Investigation of a Left-Turn Phase Time Estimation Method for TRC Operation (실시간 신호시스템의 좌회전 신호시간 추정방법에 관한 연구 (검지기 장애발생시를 중심으로))

  • The current left-turn split model adopted in COSMOS has an inherent limitation when a loop detector in the left-turn lanes was disconnected for a period of time. In this instance, the current model always allocated minimum green time to the left-turn phase, thus optimal split and efficient signal operation for the intersection was not guaranteed. In this paper, four mathmatical models using detector information of the intersection and four empirical models using historical profiles were developed and investigated for different traffic conditions to improve the operational efficiency of the intersection. From the model evaluation test, the empirical model using a four-week historical profile produced the least error among the eight models investigated. NETSIM simulation test results also showed that the proposed model could give significantly reduced delay time as compared to the current model. From these results, the operational efficency of the signalized intersections under the real-time control can be greatly improved by using the model proposed in case of the left-turn detector failure.

A Study on Placement of Point Detectors Based on Homogeneous Section for Travel Time Estimation in National Highway (일반국도 통행시간 추정을 위한 동질구간 기반 지점검지기 배치에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to set up the logic to determine lengths of the homogeneous sections effectively in order to provide dynamic travel time on real time base for the application of the model. First, considering real time traffic pattern fluctuation, lengths of the homogeneous sections for each time period and the final homogeneous sections were determined. In order to determine lengths of the homogeneous sections according to traffic condition, the cluster analysis was used based on real time data. In order to verify the homogeneous section the case with detectors in all links and the case with detectors in homogeneous section for each time period are used. As the results of verification, each cases showed similar estimation results. The results of this study are expected to be used for National Highway traffic management and the system to Provide a traffic information in the future. According to this study, when the homogeneous section decision model are used to the ITS project for National Highway, operation cost is expected to be cut by effectively establishing point detectors.

  • 차량 검지 시스템은 실시간으로 교통상황 자료를 수집하는 시스템으로, 관리대상 구간의 자료를 수집하여 시시각각 변하는 교통상황에 대한 효과적인 교통관리를 수행하도록 한다. 현재 차량 검지 시스템은 상당한 안정성과 정확성을 확보 하고 있기는 하나, 시스템 구성시 검지 시스템 자체의 구성에 드는 비용과 시간 보다는 센터와의 통신에 필요한 시스템 구축이나 전원 확보를 위한 전원선 공사등과 같은 주변 환경 요건 구축에 더욱 많은 비용과 시간이 드는 문제점이 있다. 이는 정보수집의 방식이 현재까지는 센터와 1:1 연결을 통한 정보교환에 의한 것이어서 전국단위의 N개 총신회선의 정보교환을 위해서는 1:N개의 통신회선이 필요하기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점 해결을 위한 레이더 차량 검지 시스템용 통합 프로토콜 제어기의 개발을 수행한다.

Estimation of Freeway Accident Likelihood using Real-time Traffic Data (실시간 교통자료 기반 고속도로 교통사고 발생 가능성 추정 모형)

  • This study proposed a model to estimate traffic accident likelihood using real-time traffic data obtained from freeway traffic surveillance systems. Traffic variables representing spatio-temporal variations of traffic conditions were utilized as independent variables in the proposed models. Binary logistics regression modelings were conducted to correlate traffic variables and accident data that were collected from the Seohaean freeway during recent three years, from 2004 to 2006. To apply more reliable traffic variables, outlier filtering and data imputation were also performed. The outcomes of the model that are actually probabilistic measures of accident occurrence would be effectively utilized not only in designing warning information systems but also in evaluating the effectiveness of various traffic operations strategies in terms of traffic safety.

  • This study proposed an advanced warning information system based on real-time traffic conflict analysis. An algorithm to detect and analyze unsafe traffic events associated with car-following and lane-changes using individual vehicle trajectories was developed. A positive guidance procedure was adopted to provide warning information to alert drivers to hazardous traffic conditions derived from the outcomes of the algorithm. In addition, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) analyses were conducted to investigate the predictability of warning information for the enhancement of information reliability.

  • Due to the importance of vehicle detector which plays an essential role in generating real-life traffic information, maintaining detector data quality is preeminent in advanced traffic management and information systems (ATMIS). To this end, agencies periodically conduct performance tests on detectors. Detector evaluation is generally performed by comparing baseline data with corresponding detector data. Here, two important things need to be addressed; one is errors (or uncertainties) included in baseline data and the other is the confidence interval concept to represent evaluation results of sample data to corresponding ones of population. To resolve these problems, a new detector evaluation scheme is introduced and the scheme is applied to individual level detector evaluations of loop, video image, and radar detectors. The purpose of individual level evaluation is to eliminate the balancing (or cancelling-out) effects of over- and under-counts. As a consequence, the proposed scheme is proven to be effectively applied to real-world detector evaluations.

A Real-time Traffic Signal Control Algorithm based on Travel Time and Occupancy Rate (통행시간과 점유율 기반의 실시간 신호운영 알고리즘)

  • This research suggested a new real-time traffic signal control algorithm using fusion data of the travel time and the occupancy rate. This research applied the travel time data of traffic information system to traffic signal operation, and developed the signal control process using the degree of saturation that was estimated from the travel time data. This algorithm estimates a queue length from the travel time based on a deterministic delay model, and includes the process to change from the queue length to the degree of saturation. In addition, this model can calculate the traffic signal timings using fusion data of the travel time and the occupancy rate based on the saturation degree. The micro simulation analysis was conducted for effectiveness evaluation. We checked that the average delay decreased by up to 27 percent. In addition, we checked that this signal control algorithm could respond to a traffic condition of oversaturation and detector breakdown effectively and usefully. This research has important contribution to apply the traffic information system to traffic signal operation sectors.

A Study on the Possibility of Using the Aerial-Based Vehicle Detection System for Real-Time Traffic Data Collection (항공 기반 차량검지시스템의 실시간 교통자료 수집에의 활용 가능성에 관한 연구)

  • In the US, Japan and Germany the Aerial-Based Vehicle Detection System, which collects real-time traffic data using the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft has been developed for the last several years. Therefore, this study was done to find out whether the Aerial-Based Vehicle Detection System could be used for real-time traffic data collection. For this purpose the study was divided into two parts. In the first part the possibility of retrieving real-time traffic data such as travel speed from the aerial photographic image using the image processing technique was examined. In the second part the quality of the retrieved real-time traffic data was examined to find out whether the data are good enough to be used as traffic information source. Based on the results of examinations we could conclude that it would not be easy for the Aerial- Based Vehicle Detection System to replace the present Vehicle Detection System due to technological difficulties and high cost. However, the system could be effectively used to make the emergency traffic management plan in case of incidents such as abrupt heavy rain, heavy snow, multiple pile-up, etc.
