In the design of high speed fishing vessel, it's hull form has to be decided from a view point of resistance and propulsion performance without neglection of seakeeping characteristics. In spite of many efforts, the performance improvement by hull form itself has it's limitations, specially for high speed craft. In this paper, a study on the improvement of performance for high speed planing hull type fishing vessel has been introduced.

When a fast container ship or a naval vessel is turning, comparable roll motions occur. Therefore, roll effect has to be considered in the horizontal equations of motion of the ship to predict the maneuverability well. In this thesis, a new method to determine a roll model structure and estimate its coefficients by applying the system identification technique to the data of sea trial tests was proposed. The simulation results from the estimated roll model were well consistent with the true one in spite of the difference between the estimated and the true model structures of roll hydrodynamic moment.

Sensitivity Analysis(SA) is used to predict how the model response varies according to changes in the model parameters. With SA, confidences in models which are developed to approximate certain processes and their predictions can be increased. The influences of hydrodynamic coefficients on the prediction of manoeuvrability are examined by SA of direct method. The equations of motion used are the standard equations of motion for submarine(Gertler 1967), and submerged bodies with three different appendages are considered. Through numerical simulations of three kinds of sea trials, the sensitivities of motions to hydrodynamic coefficients are found. Changes of sensitivities during trials are found to be highly dependent on the actuator scenarios and geometry of submerged body.

The current is considered in the conventional manoeuvering equation. This equation is represented as the nonlinear state and measurement equations in which external forces and the direction and the velocity of current are augmented as that variables. The external forces are modeled as the third-order Gauss-Markov processes and the direction and the velocity of current are assumed to be constant. The augmented state variables are estimated with extended Kalman-Bucy filter and the fixed-interval smoother. While Hwang estimated motion state variables, hydrodynamic coefficients and the current variables simultaneously by using extended Kalman filter, external forces of surge, sway and yaw and the direction and the velocity of current are the only parameters to be estimated in the estimation-before-modeling method. The current variables are satisfactorily estimated in simulation process where the measurement noise is present.

Shipbuilder checks the status of main engine and propeller operation before sea trial. Generally these tests are carried out at a quay during fitting out of the ship. For these tests the operator has to estimate the maximum RPM with permissible torque and thrust to ensure the safety of the mooring line and ship. In this paper, the propeller characteristics according to the draft variation for a moored ship is inveatigated. From these tests, it is shown that shaft submergence is a dominant parameter in the propeller performance at shallow shaft submergence and that the propeller performance is dependent upon the propeller RPM when the shaft submergence is kept unchanged. In this study, a simple formula of the required thrust for a given propeller shaft submergence and propeller RPM is derived. 1be propeller thrust, which is calculated by another formula in case of dtep draft, is compared with results of bollard pull test for FPSO.

Two methods which estimate manoeuvring derivatives in the model of hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a manoeuvring ship using sea trial data were compared. One is the widely used parameter estimation method by using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which estimates state variables of linearized state space model at every instant after dealing with the coefficients as the augmented state variables. The other one is the Estimation-Before-Modeling (EBM) technique, so called the two-step method. In the first step, hydrodynamic force of which dynamic model is assumed the third-order Gauss-Markov process is estimated along with motion variables by the EKF and the modified Bryson-Frazier smoother. Then, in the next step, manoeuvring derivatives are identified through the regression analysis. If the exact structure of hydrodynamic force could be known, which was an ideal case, the EKF method would be regarded as being more superior compared to the EBM technique. However the EBM technique was more robust than the EKF method from a realistic point of view where the assumed model structure was slightly different from the real one.
This study investigated the sea trial performance of a wave piercing high speed planing hull (WPH). The bow shape of the boat is sharp, and it has no chine or spray strip like a normal planing boat. The skeg is attached to the bottom of the boat in the longitudinal direction from the bow to the stern. The speed performance was analyzed as the speed dropped in a wave, and the seakeeping performance was compared with that of a planing boat with a similar velocity coefficient by measuring the vertical acceleration of the bow in the wave. The turning circle was compared with Lewandowski's estimation for a planing boat. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that the velocity drop of the developed WPH was not large in a wave, and the vertical acceleration was greatly reduced compared with that of a normal planing boat. The turning circle was somewhat larger than the estimated results for a planing boat, but the overall tendency was the same.

A Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) is now widely used for commercial and military purpose. In this paper, it is supposed that seven-meter-class RIB be used as an unmanned target ship for naval training. In order to develop many tactical maneuvering patterns of a target ship, a simple horizontal maneuvering model of a RIB is needed. Therefore, models of speed and yaw rate are constructed as the first-order differential equations based on Lewandowski#s empirical formula for steady turning circle diameter of a conventional planning hull. Some parameters in the models are determined using the results of sea trial tests. Finally, proposed models are validated through the comparison of the simulation result with the sea trial result for a specific scenario. Even though a simple model does not represent the horizontal motion of a RIB precisely, however, it can be used enough to develop tactical trajectory patterns.

In this paper, we studied to improve Inoue's[1] and Kijima's[2] model used to predict ship's manoeuvrability at initial design state. To perform this work, we carried out PMM(Planar motion Mechanism) test and rudder open water test for 12 models of low-speed blunt-ship which have horn type rudders and bulbs in afterbody. As we adopted MMG(Mathematical Modelling Group) model, we could analyze hydrodynamic and MMG experimental coefficients. The regression analyses by principle parameters were carried out for hydrodynamic and MMG experimental coefficients. The regression analyses by principle parameters were carried out for hydrodynamic and MMG experimental coefficients and the equations by regression analysis wee used to search sensitivities and to estimate ship's manoeuvrability. We had simulated ship's manoeuvrability to check revised MMG.

This paper represents the hull form development of a high speed container ship based on the thin ship theory, Hess & Smith method, the reference ship data and model test results. The high efficiency propeller designed by the lifting surface theory shows good performance in the cavitation and the pressure fluctuation force. Also, the optimum design technique based on the finite element method was adopted for the hull structure design and the hull vibration analysis. Finally, the performance of a newly developed container ship has been compared with the sea trial results and the excellent performance in speed, vibration, etc. was confirmed.
