  • Calcium silicate cement (CSC) is an environmentally sustainable, low-carbon cement and has garnered significant attention in recent studies. However, the pre-curing step required to activate the carbon dioxide reaction and to handle the sample. This study aimed to examine the viability of extending the application of CSC without pre-curing by enhancing initial strength by mixing calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) fast-hardening cement into CSC. The investigation assessed changes in compression strength and Q-XRD mineral characteristics concerning variations in the mixing ratio of CSC and CSA fast-hardening cement within a carbon dioxide atmosphere. The compressive strength results indicated that the 3-day and 7-day strengths were 14.18 MPa and 22.98 MPa, respectively, under the 50% CSC condition, meeting the type 1 cement KS standard. Mineral characteristics analysis revealed an increase in calcite mineral, a byproduct of the carbon dioxide reaction, contributing to strength enhancement. Even after seven days, substantial quantities of unreacted rankinitene and pseudowollastonite were observed, as well as dicalcium silicate and yeelimite, which are hydrated minerals. This observation was confirmed the possibility of strength improvement after 7 days.

  • Magneto-optical (MO) materials have attracted much attention, since they can be utilized for various optical applications, such as magnetic field sensors, optical current sensors, optical isolators, and optical circulators. In this study, alumino-borosilicate (ABS) glasses with high concentrations of Dy3+ ions were fabricated by a conventional melt-quenching technique, and the dependence of their thermal, optical, and magneto-optical properties on Dy3+ ion concentration was investigated. The MO property of the glasses was investigated by measurement of Faraday rotation at 1550 nm. The Faraday rotation angle increased linearly with the increase of Dy3+ ion concentration in the glasses. A very high Verdet constant of -6.86 rad/(T·m) was obtained for glass with a Dy3+ ion concentration of 30 mol%. In addition, the ABS-Dy glasses showed good thermal stability of greater than 128 ℃ against crystallization, and high optical transmission of 70% in the visible to near-infrared windows of 480-720, 1390-1560, and 1800-2400 nm. Due to the high Verdet constant and good thermal stability, the ABS-Dy glasses in this study could be candidate optical materials for MO device applications at 1550 nm.

  • High impact polystyrene (HIPS) nanocomposites with organically modified montmorillonite (organoclay) via in situ polymerization were synthesized, and the effects of organoclay incorporation on material properties were investigated. Organoclays having a reactive group, vinylbenzyltrimethyl clay (VBC) and octadecylvinylbenzyldimethyl clay (ODVC), were prepared by the ion-exchange reactions of sodium montmorillonite with vinylbenzyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (VBTMAC) and octadecylvinylbenzyldimethyl ammonium bromide (ODVBDAB), respectively, and a commercial organoclay, $Cloisite^{(R)}$ 10A(C10A), was used for comparison. It was confirmed that the X-ray diffraction (XRD) peak of the nanocomposites prepared by ODVC disappeared, which indicates the exfoliation of silicate layers. On the contrary, the XRD peak of the nanocomposites prepared by C10A shifted to lower angle, indicative of the intercalation of polymer chains into silicate layers. Rheological properties such as storage modulus and complex viscosity increased with increasing organoclay.

  • High impact polystyrene/organically modified layered silicate (HIPS/OLS) nanocomposites by in situ polymerization were synthesized to investigate the effect of clay on the particle size and properties of rubber. In the OLS, the montmorillonite having benzyl group showed best dispersion in polystyrene phase. With the addition of clay, the intercalated peak from XRB was confirmed, but the peak gradually shifted to lower angle as rubber concentration increased. Thus, it is speculated that the organoclay disperses better in rubber phase than in polystyrene phase. The average rubber particle size increased and the particle size distribution widened as the amount of clay increased, which may be caused by the increase of the viscosity ratio of rubber to polystyrene phases and the unstable dispersion. The materials having clay showed improved thermal properties from thermogravimetric analysis. Rheological properties such as complex viscosity and storage modulus increased as the amount of clay increased.
