  • M.C Escher was not a mathematician or architect, but a visual graphic woodblock artist. He expresses space in various angles such as illusion and space not represented in reality, repetition, geometric pattern and change in space vision. However, as his works represent the impossible space which is virtually not exist in reality, they were examined numerically by scientists and mathematicians rather than by designers. Because his distinctive approach to view space, his works have been highly evaluated by scholars in various fields. Based on the previous research by mathematicians and scientists, this study will examine the sp- atial logic was represented visually in the works of M.C Escher and find out the possible and adoptable alternatives for new space design and provide the design application direction in the expression of interior space.

  • This study is to plan the interior spaces of cruise ships for domestic services. In order to give directions for planning of interior spaces, a survey was done through questionnaire by Koreans who have experience of travelling on cruise ships. Based on the survey results and other important situations around domestic cruising industry we set up the critical conditions for the interior space design for domestic service cruise ships. And then the data on the cruise ships which have similar conditions with the domestic service cruise ships are analysed. Types and sizes of interior spaces and horizontal and vertical composition of private and public spaces are main concerns in this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to present systematic interior design guidelines for the elderly housing environment. As an environmental affordance system, Murth 's user benefit criteria was employed to analyze the items of the interior design guidlines in the 5 selected elderly housing literatures. 646 items were collected from the 5 representative literatures on elderly housing design. As a result of the content anaylysis, a set of comprehensive interior design guidenlines which was systematically synthesized based on the Murtha' s user benefit criteria was presented according to the specific spaces. The behaviroral facilitation and physiological maintenance dimension most frequently mentioned in foreign literature. Perceptual maintenance dimension needed to be developed in the future in elderly housing.

  • To verify the types of effects that plants have in our general living conditions, I examined an air quality in living rooms of the three, 129.78m2 size, apartments that were with and without plants. and the findings of the study were as addressed below. 1) Experiments showed no statistically significant differences in Case A. However, in Case B and Case C, the standard deviation of PM10, PM2.5 and PM 1.0 verified that each had statistically significant (p<.01) differences. 2) It is believed that the effect of reducing particle matters due to the installation of plants in the indoor space is to vary significantly depending on the indoor environmental conditions, the cleanliness of the room, and the amount of furniture and may also differ depending on the daily dietary cooking method. In addition, it is believed that the planterior will not only reduce indoor fine dust, but also reduce the psychological comfort and eye fatigue of the residents. Nevertheless, supplementary research is needed. 3) In the planterior design for reducing indoor particle matters, various measures were examined. Among them, the vertical wall design method was tested and suggested through empirical experiments. In addition, maintenance methods were proposed depending on the type of indoor plant.

  • This paper has focused on comprehending the interior designs and characteristics of modern department stores in Korea by looking into the birth and changes of those built under the Japanese Forced Occupation Period. The first modem department stores including Mitsukoshi, Georgia and Hwashin Department Stores began to appear in Korea under the Japanese Colonial Rule. They considered a variety of architectural elements like construction planning, shop arrangement, path of customer movement and interior design. The interior of modem department stores aimed to pursue the so-called modernization movement, but failed to fully contain the unique characteristics of the times in that particular period. Modem department stores took on new western styles prevailed in Korea and were characterized by the eclecticism in which various architectural forms exist together. In other words, their interiors implied a sign of the times in the confusing and corrupt world then. Especially those modern department stores were designed, repaired and extended by foreign designers who were ignorant of the history of Korean architecture. What is worse, their further remodelling practices made big mistakes by considering only functional and economical aspects and giving a back seat to the architectural and historical value of existing modern department stores. Therefore, we should make more efforts to study and conserve the fundamentals of modem architectures like modem department stores in order to have better understanding of the aesthetic value of indoor space and facilitating smooth communication between past and present.
