There have been numerous studies on extracting the R-peak from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. However, most of the detection methods are complicated to implement in a real-time portable electrocardiograph device and have the disadvantage of requiring a large amount of calculations. R-peak detection requires pre-processing and post-processing related to baseline drift and the removal of noise from the commercial power supply for ECG data. An adaptive filter technique is widely used for R-peak detection, but the R-peak value cannot be detected when the input is lower than a threshold value. Moreover, there is a problem in detecting the P-peak and T-peak values due to the derivation of an erroneous threshold value as a result of noise. We propose a robust R-peak detection algorithm with low complexity and simple computation to solve these problems. The proposed scheme removes the baseline drift in ECG signals using an adaptive filter to solve the problems involved in threshold extraction. We also propose a technique to extract the appropriate threshold value automatically using the minimum and maximum values of the filtered ECG signal. To detect the R-peak from the ECG signal, we propose a threshold neighborhood search technique. Through experiments, we confirmed the improvement of the R-peak detection accuracy of the proposed method and achieved a detection speed that is suitable for a mobile system by reducing the amount of calculation. The experimental results show that the heart rate detection accuracy and sensitivity were very high (about 100%).

Reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers(R-SOAs) were designed with high gain, wide optical bandwidth, high thermal reliability and wide modulation bandwidth in TO-can package for the transmitter of wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network(WDM-PON) application. Double trench structure and current block layer were introduced in designing the active layer of R-SOA to enable high speed modulation. The injection power requirement and the viable temperature range of WDM-PON system are experimentally analysed in based on Amplified Spontaneous Emission(ASE)-injected R-SOAs. The effect of the different injection spectrum in the gain-saturated R-SOA was experimentally characterized based on the measurements of excessive intensity noise, Q factor, and BER. The proposed spectral pre-composition method reduces the bandwidth of injection source below the AWG bandwidth and thereby avoids spectrum distortion impeding the intensity noise reduction originated from the amplitude squeezing.

In this study, a 12 V PWM boost converter was designed with the optimal values of the external components of the power stage was well as the compensation stage for smart electronic applications powered by a battery device. The 12 V boost PWM converter consisted of several passive elements, such as a resistor, inductor and capacitor with a diode, power MOS switch and control IC chip for the control PWM signal. The devices of the power stage and compensation stage were designed to maintain stable operation under a range of load conditions as well as achieving the highest power efficiency. The results of this study were first verified by a simulation in SPICE from calculations of the values of major external elements comprising the converter. The design was also implemented on the prototype PCBboard using commercial IC LM3481 from Texas Instruments, which has a nominal output voltage of 12 V. The output voltage, ripple voltage, and load regulation with the line regulation were measured using a digital oscilloscope, DMM tester, and DC power supply. By configuring the converter under the same conditions as in the circuit simulation, the experimental results matched the simulation results.

Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena affecting the total mechanical Performance of the composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured through the conventional optical microscope and the nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) technique and then were compared together as a function of the epoxy matrix modulus and the fiber surface treatment by the electrodeposition method (ED). Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test in combination of AE method. ED treatment of the fiber surface enlarged the number of fiber fracture locations in comparison to the untreated case. The number of fiber fracture events measured by the AE method was less than optically obtained one. However, fiber fracture locations determined by AE detection corresponded with those by optical observation with small errors. The source location of fiber breaks by AE analysis could be a nondestructive, valuable method to measure interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of matrix in non-, semi- and/or transparent polymer composites.

The acoustic emission (AE) behavior of reinforced concrete beams tested under flexural loading was investigated to characterize and identify the source of damage. This research was aimed at identifying the characteristic AE response associated with micro-crack development, localized crack propagation, corrosion, and debonding of the reinforcing steel. Concrete beams were prepared to isolate the damage mechanisms by using plain, notched-plain, reinforced, and corroded-reinforced specimens. The beams were tested using four-point cyclic step-loading. The AE response was analyzed to obtain key parameters such as the time history of AE events, the total number and rate of AE events, and the characteristic features of the waveform. Initial analysis of the AE signal has shown that a clear difference in the AE response is observed depending on the source of the damage. The Felicity ratio exhibited a correlation with the overall damage level, while the number of AE events during unloading can be an effective criterion to estimate the level of corrosion distress in reinforced concrete structures. Consequently, AE measurement characterization appears to provide a promising approach for estimating the level of deterioration in reinforced concrete structure.

Journal bearings in the rotating machineries are vulnerable to the contamination or the insufficient supply of lubricating oil, which is likely to be the cause of unexpected shutdown or malfunction of these systems. Various destructive and nondestructive testing methods had been used for the reduction of maintenance cost and the operational safety problems due to the accidents related to bearing damages. In this experimental approach, acoustic emission monitoring is employed to the detection of incipient failure caused by intervention of foreign particles most probable in the journal bearing systems. Experimental schedules for the intervention of foreign particles was composed to be more quantitative and systematic than last study in consideration of minimum oil film thickness and particle size. The experiment was conducted under such designed conditions as inserting alumina particles to the lubrication layer in the simulated journal bearing system. Several parameters such as AE rms level, waveform, AE energy distribution and other AE event parameters are used for analysis and characterization of damage source. The results showed that the history of damage was well correlated with the changes of AE rms level and the type of damage source signal can be verified using other informations such as waveform, distributions of AE parameters etc.
Many researches have been performed whether electrical stimulation could be used for diagnosis and treatment on the auditory system impairment. Unfortunately, there were no standard methods or theoretical background for choosing stimulus conditions because of the lack of understanding on the transmission of electrical stimulation through the auditory pathway. This research was conducted to observe the effect of electrical stimulation on the tinnitus-induced animals. Nine guniea pigs were used for the experment and divided into two groups, five animals for the experimental group(A) and four animals for the control group(B). Experimental conditions were divided into four steps, before tinnitus induction and 1, 6, 12 hours after tinnitus induction using salicylate based on the Jastreboff model. In each experimental condition, ABR and ECochG were obtained, and autocorrelation coefficients were calculated from normalized waveforms based on rms values. Sum of all the autocorrelation coefficients was extracted as a parameter to observe the changes between before and after the electrical stimulation. As a result, ABR parameter values were rapidly increased 6 hours after tinnitus induction, the gradually returned back to the initial state. On the other hand, when electrical stimulation was applied, parameter values did not change compared with the initial sate. Parameter values of ECochG showed that the effect of electrical stimulation appeared 12 hours after the tinnitus induction. It was concluded that an electrical stimulation to the tinnitus-induced model changes the correlation coefficients of ABR and ECochG waveforms.
Electromagnetic (EM) methods are generally divided into frequency-domain EM (FDEM) and time-domain EM (TDEM) methods, depending on the source waveform. The FDEM and TDEM fields are mathematically related by the Fourier transformation, and the TDEM field can thus be obtained as the Fourier transformation of FDEM data. For modeling in time-domain, we can use fast frequency-domain modeling codes and then convert the results to the time domain with a suitable numerical method. Thus, frequency-to-time transformations are of interest to EM methods, which is generally attained through fast Fourier transform. However, faster frequency-to-time transformation is required for the 3D inversion of TDEM data or for the processing of vast air-borne TDEM data. The diffusion expansion method (DEM) is one of smart frequency-to-time transformation methods. In DEM, the EM field is expanded into a sequence of diffusion functions with a known frequency dependence, but with unknown diffusion-times that must be chosen based on the data to be transformed. Especially, accuracy of DEM is sensitive to the diffusion-time. In this study, we developed a method to determine the optimum range of diffusion-time values, minimizing the RMS error of the frequency-domain data approximated by the diffusion expansion. We confirmed that this method produces accurate results over a wider time range for a homogeneous half-space and two-layered model.

Recently, the results of many studies have clarified the successful performance of magnetostrictive transducers in which a ferromagnetic patch is used for the transduction of guided shear waves; this is because a thin ferromagnetic patch with strong magnetostriction is very useful for generating and detecting shear wave. This investigation deals with bulk shear wave transduction by means of magnetostriction; on the other hand, the existing studies have been focused on guided shear waves. A modular transducer was developed; this transducer comprised a coil, magnets, and a thin ferromagnetic patch that was made of Fe-Co alloy. Some experiments were conducted to verify the performance of the developed transducer. Radiation directivity pattern of the developed transducer was obtained, and a test to detect the damage on a side drill hole of a steel block specimen was carried out. From the results of these tests, the good performance of the transducer for nondestructive testing was verified on the basis of the signal-to-noise ratio and narrow beam directivity.

In this paper, a digital current control system using a FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) was implemented, and the system was applied to an induction motor widely used as an industrial driving machine. The FPGA designed by VHDL(VHSIC Hardware Description Language) consists of a PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) generation block, a PWM protection block, a speed measuring block, a watch dog timer block, an interrupt control block, a decoder logic block, a wait control block and digital input and output blocks respectively. Dedicated clock inputs on the FPGA were used for high-speed execution, and an up-down counter and a latch block were designed in parallel, in order that the triangle wave could be operated at 40 MHz clock. When triangle wave is compared with many registers respectively, gate delay occurs from excessive fan-outs. To reduce the delay, two triangle wave registers were implemented in parallel. Amplitude and frequency of the triangle wave, and dead time of PWM could be changed by software. This FPGA was synthesized by pASIC 2SpDE and Synplify-Lite synthesis tool of Quick Logic company. The final simulation for worst cases was successfully performed under a Verilog HDL simulation environment. And the FPGA programmed for an 84 pin PLCC package was applied to digital current control system for 3-phase induction motor. The digital current control system of the 3 phase induction motor was configured using the DSP(TMS320C31-40 MHz), FPGA, A/D converter and Hall CT etc., and experimental results showed the effectiveness of the digital current control system.
