The brain-computer interface obtains a user's electroencephalogram as a replacement communication unit for the disabled such that the user is able to control machines by simply thinking instead of using hands or feet. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method based on a non-selected filter by SBCSP to classify motor imagery EEG. First, we divide frequencies (4~40 Hz) into 4-Hz units and apply CSP to each Unit. Second, we obtain the FLD score vector by combining FLD results. Finally, the FLD score vector is projected onto the optimal plane for classification using PCA. We use BCI Competition III dataset IVa, and Extracted features are used as input for LS-SVM. The classification accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated using $10{\times}10$ fold cross-validation. For subjects 'aa', 'al', 'av', 'aw', and 'ay', results were $85.29{\pm}0.93%$, $95.43{\pm}0.57%$, $72.57{\pm}2.37%$, $91.82{\pm}1.38%$, and $93.50{\pm}0.69%$, respectively.
Melanization of B16 melanoma cells was comparatively studied by the aqueous extract of Epimedium koreanum Nakai(EK) and $\alpha$-MSH. In addition, inhibitory effects of RA was investigated. B16 melanoma cells(about 1${\times}10_5$) have been shown an increase in tyrosinase activity and melanin contents in proportion to concentration of $\alpha$-MSH when treated with $\alpha$-MSH and incubated for 72 hrs. They indicated a 350% increase in tyrosinase activity and a 290% increase in melanin contents at 8 ng/mL. In case of EK, they have been shown a 200% increase in tyrosinase activity and a 180% increase in melanin contents at 100 ${\mu}g$/mL. In addition of RA to the above condition, they have been shown an inhibition from 350% to 210% in tyrosinase activity and from 290% to 250% in melanin contents in $\alpha$-MSH, and inhibition from 200% to 100% in tyrosinase activity and from 180% to 120% in melanin contents in EK. From the above results, it is suggested that EK promotes melanization of B16 melanoma cells through cAMP pathway, whereas RA inhibits it.
Quality characteristics of Yanggaeng prepared with water extract (CRE) and powder (CRP) of roasted coffee ground (CR) were investigated. Total polyphenol content and DPPH raidcal scavenging ability of water extract of CRE were 13.52 g/mL and 78.75%, respectively. The pH ranges of Yanggaeng prepared with CRE (CREY) and CRP (CRPY) were 7.10~7.29 and 6.95~7.15, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of CREY containing 0.1~1.0% CRE showed 8.77~43.10% and CRPY containing 0.1~1.0% CRP showed 5.28~14.92%. The total polyphenol contents and DPPH radical scavenging activity of CREY and CRPY increased significantly with increasing CRE and CRP concentrations (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation which includes taste, flavor, texture, and overall acceptability of CREY and CRPY were higher than that of control. The overall acceptability showed the highest levels in Yanggaeng containing 0.5% CRE and containing 0.3% CRP. These results indicate the potential use of roasted coffee ground residue as a valuable resource for development of side menu in coffee restaurants.
These studies were carried out to investigate the effect of mixed medicinal herbs, such as Curcuma longa and Lithospermum erythrorhozon (CL), Lithospermum erythrorhozon and Sophrora flavescens AITON (LS), Sophrora flavescens AITON and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (SG), and Glycyrrhiza uralensis and Schizandra chinensis (GS) on shelf-life of kimchi. The pH of kimchi containg 1% of medicinal herb extracts such as CL, LS, SG and GS was higher than that of control during fermentation for 25 days at $10^{\circ}C$ Titratable acidity, viable cells count of total bacteria and lactic acid bacteria in the kimchi were changed more slowly than in control. Shelf-life of kimchi was extended by addition of 1% mixed medicinal extracts such as CL, LS, SG and GS (1:1), respectively. The sensory quality (taste, flavor, crispness and overall acceptability) of CL, LS, SG and GS added kimchi was similar to that of control at 10 days of fermentation. But the sourness of LS, SG and GS (1%) added kimchi was more slowly developed than control after 15 days of fermentation, respectively. The effect of LS, SG and GS mixture on shelf-life in kimchi was significant. But the medicinal herb extracts added kimchi decreased its sensory quality with increasing concentration of the extracts.
Membrane proteins are involved in many common diseases, including heart disease and cancer. In various disease states, such as cancer, abnormal signaling pathways that are related to the membrane proteins cause the cells to divide out of control and the expression of membrane proteins can be altered. Membrane proteins have the hydrophobic environment of a lipid bilayer, which makes an analysis of the membrane proteins notoriously difficult. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of two different methods for optimal membrane protein extraction. High-speed centrifuge and reagent-based method with a -/+ filter aided sample preparation (FASP) were compared. As a result, the high-speed centrifuge method is quite effective in analyzing the mitochondrial inner membranes, while the reagent-based method is useful for endoplasmic reticulum membrane analysis. In addition, the function of the membrane proteins extracted from the two methods were analyzed using GeneGo software. GO processes showed that the endoplasmic reticulum-related responses had higher significance in the reagent-based method. An analysis of the process networks showed that one cluster in the high-speed centrifuge method and four clusters in the reagent-based method were visualized. In conclusion, the two methods are useful for the analysis of different subcellular membrane proteins, and are expected to assist in selecting the membrane protein extraction method by considering the target subcellular membrane proteins for study.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease associated with various metabolic syndromes, such as obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes. Cudrania tricuspidata is a medicinal plant distributed widely in Asia and has been used in clinical practice to treat various diseases. The aim of this study is to determine the lipid-lowering effects of C. tricuspidata fruit extract (CTE) using a cell model induced by free fatty acids (FFAs). HepG2 cells were exposed to 1mM FFAs (palmitic acid:oleic acid = 2:1) for 24 hr to simulate the conditions of NAFLD in vitro. CTE attenuated the increases of lipid accumulation, intracellular triglyceride, and cholesterol content and inhibited 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase) activity in the HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Also, CTE inhibited the protein expression of lipogenesis-related genes, such as sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1/-2 (SREBP-1/-2), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and stearoyl CoA desaturase-1 (SCD-1) in FFAs-induced lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells. In addition, CTE-induced adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation in HepG2 cells. These results suggest that CTE attenuates hepatic lipid accumulation by inhibiting lipogenesis through the modulation of the AMPK signaling pathway on FFAs-induced lipogenesis in HepG2 cells and may potentially prevent NAFLD.

As aging progresses, reactive oxygen species (ROS) reduces skin moisturization and collapses skin barrier function. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of skin moisturizing and skin barrier function enhancement by extracts from halophytes using HaCaT cells. Spartina anglica (S. anglica; SAE) and Calystegia soldanella (C. soldanella; CSE), a kind of halophytes, were collected from Dongmak beach in Incheon, and extracted with 70% ethanol. At the first, we evaluated the cytotoxicity of extracts in HaCaT cell using WST-8 Kit. As a result, the other experiment was conducted by setting the concentration at which the cell viability was 90% or more. SAE and CSE showed high radical scavenging activity through ABTS assay. Expression levels of genes related to skin moisturizing and skin barrier functions, were analyzed by real-time qPCR. As a result, it showed that the expression of aquaporin 3, hyaluronan synthase 2, and transglutaminase 1 was increased by SAE treatment but not changed by CSE. Activation of extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38 mitogen activated protein kinase was induced by SAE. These results suggest that SAE can be used as functional materials for cosmetics for skin moisturizing and barrier function enhancement.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes are responsible for the degradation and formation of the extracellular matrix (ECM), and overproduction of MMPs is observed in several diseases, such as cancer and asthma, that progress with metastatic characteristics. Natural products, especially phytochemicals, have been an important source of MMP inhibitors with reduced side effects. Although the majority of phytochemicals inhibit the enzymatic activity of MMPs, some suppress MMP production. In this context, the current study evaluated the potential of Corydalis heterocarpa, a halophyte with reported bioactivities, to inhibit MMP expression in PMA-stimulated HT-1080 cells. A crude C. heterocarpa extract was shown to decrease the mRNA and protein expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 while increasing the endogenous MMP inhibitors TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 which regulate MMP expression in healthy tissues. In addition, our results show that the inhibitory effects of C. heterocarpa might occur through suppression of the phosphorylation of MAPK signaling, the upstream activator of MMP overexpression. In conclusion, C. heterocarpa is a potential source of antimetastatic compounds that might serve as lead molecules to develop novel MMP inhibitors.
Ship-radiated noise received by passive sonar that can measure underwater noise can be identified and classified ship using Detection of Envelope Modulation on Noise (DEMON) analysis. However, in a low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) environment, it is difficult to analyze and identify the target frequency line containing ship information in the DEMONgram. In this paper, we conducted a study to extract target frequency lines using semantic segmentation among deep learning techniques for more accurate target identification in a low SNR environment. The semantic segmentation models U-Net, UNet++, and DeepLabv3+ were trained and evaluated using simulated DEMONgram data generated by changing SNR and fundamental frequency, and the DEMONgram prediction performance of DeepShip, a dataset of ship-radiated noise recordings on the strait of Georgia in Canada, was compared using the trained models. As a result of evaluating the trained model with the simulated DEMONgram, it was confirmed that U-Net had the highest performance and that it was possible to extract the target frequency line of the DEMONgram made by DeepShip to some extent.
