  • 'The facilities standards of water supply' issued by the Ministry of Environment in 2004 indicates that expansion joints cannot be used in welding water supply steel pipes. However, their reason is not clear and it is difficult to confirm the stability of the steel pipe for a water supply pipeline. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not an expansion joint is necessary to improve the stability of water supply in steel pipe through a displacement analysis of the pipework. The test results are as follows. Firstly, it was found that expansion and contraction of the water supply steel pipe (D 2,400 mm) occur repeatedly in 4 cycles per year, and the maximum expansion and contraction amount of the pipe is 13.03 mm in 1.24 km pipelines. Secondly, the thermal stress caused by expansion and contraction of the steel pipe is $13.7{\sim}36.1kgf/cm^2$ according to the burial depth (0~4 m). The main comparison factors to determine the stability of the steel pipe (STWW 400) were the allowable tensile strength and the fatigue limit, which were computed to be $4,100kgf/cm^2$ and $1,840kgf/cm^2$, respectively. Finally, the thermal stress of the steel pipe is very small compared to the allowable tensile stress and fatigue stress. Therefore, thermal stress does not affect the stability of the steel pipe, although the expansion and contraction of the steel pipe occurs by temperature changes. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that expansion joints are not required in water supply steel pipelines.

  • Studies have been made on performance evaluation of expansion joint systems for an ordinary highway or road bridge. However little study has been made for runway connection bridges at airports. A study on performance evaluated from computer code analysis and shrinkage, extension, and compression repetition tests based on KS F 4425 is conducted to a newly developed expansion joint system which has been installed in a runway connection bridge at Incheon Airport Extension 2 Construction Site. The MIDAS computer code is used to analyze the performance before the manufacture of the mock-up of expansion joint system on the basis of design requirements. Tests based on the KS F 4425 of 2001 year-version are conducted for the mock-up. Domestic codes and standards to validate the performance of the expansion joint system in a connection bridge have been developed for a vehicle. However the expansion joint system tested in this study is installed in a runway connection bridge for an aircraft. Conservatively the heaviest one among airplanes departing and landing at Incheon Airport is assumed level-F $468.4kN/m^2$ and adopted for the tests and analyses in this study. KS F 4425 method is selected for the shrinkage, extension, and compression repetition tests. No remarkable problem was observed for the 2,500-cycle shrinkage and extension and two million-cycle repeatition load tests. The results of this study are expected to contribute to establishment of code and standard for the performance validation of an expansion joint system installed in a runway connection bridge for an aircraft by providing performance test results and computer analysis results based on finite element methods.

  • This study analyzed the shipbuilding structure of House Tangerine over a ten day period and according to the month in Jeju. By estimating and analyzing the price flexibility function of House Tangerine, the aim was to determine if the shipment control can stabilize and increase the incomes of House Tangerine farmers and derive policy implications. The greatest decline in the coefficients of the ten-day price flexibility occurred in the equations from early June to late July. Therefore, the shipment control of House Tangerine is required more during early June and late July. The coefficient of DUM_Q, indicating the year in which the quality of House Tangerine is somewhat deteriorated, was statistically significant and had a (-) sign. The coefficients of DUM_SUK, indicating the year in which Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day) was in October, was statistically significant and had a (-) sign in the middle and late October. The greatest decline in the coefficient of monthly price flexibility function occurred in July, June, and September. Therefore, shipment control is required more in July, June, and September. The (-) signs of the coefficients of DUM_Q and DUM_SUK suggest that the need for shipment control is more important when the quality is less than better quality and that the necessity of shipment control is required more when Chuseok is in October, respectively.
