  • BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity(SO), a condition of the reduction in muscle mass paired with an increased fat mass has been paid attention because of its association with disability in later life. A few evidence, however, has reported the association with these factors. PURPOSE: To explore the association among SO, physical function and fitness in older women. METHOD: 257 older women(age of 74) were recruited from Y city and 7 physical functions and 4 fitness tests were measured. Participants were classified into one of four groups based on their body fat and muscle mass: Normal group (GR-A), high fat(GR-B), sarcopenia(GR-C), and sarcopenic obese(GR-D). GLMand LSD-test were conducted with SPSS 12.0. RESULTS: Chair stand, arm-curl, back-scratch, 2-min steps of GR-A was higher than GR-C and GR-D(p<.05). One-leg stand of GR-A was higher than GR-D(p<.01) and of GR-C was higher than GR-D(p<.01).8ft-TUG of GR-D was lower than GR-A(p<.01). Grip strength, knee extension of GR-A was higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01) and knee flexion of GR-A was also higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01). CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, we conclude that SO is significantly associated with lower physical function and fitness in older Korean women, which alarm the risk of frailty induced by SO.

  • Physical activity has positive effects on cognitive functions by aging. However, it is rare to find research that have scientifically investigated the effects on the affective-cognitive function. Thus, this study aims to brain-scientifically research its effects of physical activity on the affective-cognitive function of adults in adolescence and senescence. As subjects of this study, a total of 60 males adults in D region were selected, and then equally divided into four groups of young exercise group(25~35y/o), young non-exercise group(26~35y/o), old exercise group(60~70y/o), and old non-exercise group(60~70y/o). As experiment tools, the EEG measuring equipment and International Affective Picture System(IAPS) were used. The experiment of this study used an affective-cognitive task where subjects pressed a button depending on emotional valence(positive, neutral, negative) shown in the pictures. During the task, EEG measured eight areas(Fp1, Fp2, Fz, C3, C4, Cz, T3, T4) out of brain areas in accordance with the international 10-20 electrode system, EEG was measured. For statistical analysis, a three-way ANOVA on $4(group){\times}3(stimulus){\times}8(area)$ was conducted. The results showed main effects of group in both reaction time and accuracy, and also in the latency of P3. And there was an interaction between group and stimulus the amplitude of P3. In conclusion, Physical activity has positive effects on the affective-cognitive function of people in adolescence and senescence.

  • Purpose: Due to the change of demography, the ratio of senior drivers has increased and the transition to a super-aged society is expected to make more seniors drive in the future. Method: In this research, we analyzed medical characteristics of the driver's age-specific decline in body function and saw that both the function of the physical as well as mental capacities deteriorates as people age. Among them, various functions are precipitously weakened after reaching 70, implying that those over the age of 70 are classified as seniors in a medical sense. In this context, we also could identify that based on such age criteria, various safety policies for senior drivers should be developed and set up in Korea. Result: We could find a steep fall in the physical function of body after reaching 70 from the chronological change of cognitive function and judgment ability. In particular, it is revealed that the driving license institution and aptitude test for drivers over 70 should be thoroughly examined, as physical functions necessary for driving such as eyesight and hearing ability is not strong enough in many drivers over 70. Conclusion: Focusing on the physical capacity to drive, we tried to find the hazardous age bracket of senior drivers which might influence driving behaviors. Going forward, we expect this work would help to understand the policies for senior drivers and drivers' physical differences.

  • This study is an analysis and review of the international research on interventions using music for the rehabilitation of patients with Parkinson's disease(PD). It categorizes 24 intervention studies conducted over the last 20 years based on the level of music usage and type of music utilized. The aim of this analysis was to identify which musical elements improved timing issues related to the initiation and cessation of movement in patients with PD. The studies involved six with music-based interventions and 18 with rhythm-based interventions, depending on the level of music usage. Rhythm, a common element in music, was a suitable factor for addressing the participants' issues. Furthermore, this review suggests that the characteristics of the researchers impact the extent to which musical elements are used and the diversity of those elements, which influences the intervention's effectiveness. Therefore, this study provides information on how to specify and systematically consider intervention efforts and the use of musical elements that can be applied in rehabilitation for patients with PD.

  • This study compared how falls can be reduced in disabled elderly people by using the Otago exercise program and ascertained the program's effects on physical function and psychological recovery. The subjects were 30 people, and were assigned to two groups. The experimental group had 17 people, and the other was the control group that had 13 people. The experimental group attended the 50-minute program twice a week for 12 weeks. The outcome measures for lower extremity muscle strength, postural balance, flexibility, and self-efficacy were tested at the pre-test and post-test phases. In the analysis, general characteristics were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Physical function and self-efficacy were analyzed by independent T-test between the two groups, and correspondence T-tests were used within the two groups. The result of this study demonstrated that the experimental group showed significant increases in lower extremity muscle strength, static balance, flexibility and dynamic balance, and self-efficacy showed a small increase in the experimental group. But the control group showed significant decreases in static balance, flexibility and fall efficacy. The control group also showed decreases in lower extremity strength and dynamic balance. So the results of this study proved that the Otago exercise program brought about positive changes to improve physical function and psychological function to help prevent disabled elderly people from falling.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among the functional status, hostility, and social support in patients with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The subjects were comprised of 135 patients who had received PCI from two general hospitals in Seoul, Korea. The functional status differed significantly according to gender (t=5.880, p<0.001), age (F=23.620, p<0.001), education (F=17.718, p<0.001), occupation (t=-6.498, p<0.001), monthly income (F=7.237, p<0.001), and smoking (t=2.327, p=0.025). The hostility differed significantly according to age (F=6.150, p=0.001), period after PCI (F=6.141, p=0.001), and family history (t=2.514, p=0.013). Differences were observed in the scores for social support according to age (F=2.866, p=0.039) and education (F=5.136, p=0.002). Significant positive correlations were found among functional status and social support (r=.20, p=0.025), friends support (r=.22, p=0.010) and a significant negative correlation between functional status and hostility (r=-.24, p=0.005). A significant negative correlation was found between hostility and friends support (r=-.17, p=0.046). Nurses should consider the characteristics of patients who have undergone PCI and develop nursing intervention programs to improve their functional status, hostility, and social support.
