Objectives : This study evaluated the medical communication skills of trainee doctors and analyzed the relationship between medical communication skills, self-efficacy on clinical performance (SECP) and empathy. Methods : A total of 106 trainee doctors from a university hospital participated. The questionnaire comprised self-evaluated medical communication skills, modified SECP and the Korean version of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals version. The mean difference in medical communication skills scores according to gender, age, division (intern, internal medicine group or surgery group) and position (intern, first-/second- and third-/fourth-year residents) were analyzed. Pearson correlation coefficients were determined between medical communication skills, modified SECP and empathy. The effects of each variable on medical communication skills were verified using the structural equation model. Results : There were no statistically significant mean differences in self-evaluated medical communication skills according to gender, age, division or position. Medical communication skills had a significant positive correlation with modified SECP (r=0.782, p<0.001) and empathy (r=0.210, p=0.038). Empathy had a direct effect on modified SECP (β=0.30, p<0.01) and modified SECP had a direct effect on medical communication skills (β=0.80, p<0.001). Empathy indirectly influenced medical communication skills, mediating modified SECP (β=0.26, p<0.05). Conclusions : Medical communication skills are an important core curriculum of residency programs, as they have a direct correlation with SECP, which is needed for successful treatment. Moreover, the medical communication needs a new understanding that is out of empathy.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to estimate the needs of long-term care in S-city Gyeonggi-do according to ADL and IADL. Methods: We surveyed to investigate the needs of 397 study samples which had been selected by stratified randomized sampling, 2.7% in each Dong of S-city. We estimated the disability of elderly by using standards based on ADL and IADL of OECD and Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Results and Conclusions: According to standards of OECD, the elderly with severe disability were 4,712(31.2%). According to standards of Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, the severe disabled elderly with helper were 3,776(24.9%) and the severe disabled elderly without helper 2,130(14.1%) So We concluded that the long-term care beds estimated by need were from 2,130 to 4,712. To estimate the long-term care beds, we have to consider together physical, mental, nutrition, and cognition status, existence of helper, helper characteristics, and emotional relationship between elderly and helper. But we considered only disability grades of physical states and existence of helper in this study. So it will be useful to conduct study to consider these other factors in future. At the same time this study is of value to estimate objectively long-term care needs based on physical needs in one region.
Purpose: This study was to identify the relations among ADL, self-efficacy, physical activity and cognitive function in elders. Methods: A total of 257 subjects aged between 60 and 92 were selected through convenient sampling. Data were collected with a self-reported questionnaire from November 1 to November 30, 2008. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: Differences in ADL, self-efficacy, physical activity, and cognitive functions according to general characteristics were as follows. ADL was significantly different according to age, cohabitation, recognition on health, and successful aging. Self-efficacy was significantly different according to cohabitation, recognition on health, and successful aging. Physical activity was significantly different according to age, educational level, cohabitation, and cognition on health. Cognitive function was significantly different according to age, educational level, job, and recognition on health. The correlation coefficient (r) of the ADL variables was .565 for self-efficacy, .633 for physical activity and .460 for cognitive function. Conclusion: Findings of this study may be useful in understanding the health status of community-dwelling elders and developing more specific health promotion programs.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among depression, somatic symptoms, and activities of daily living of elderly women in urban areas. Method: After obtaining participant's consent forms, a one-time, face-to-face, and private interview was conducted with each participant from Sep, 2006 to Jan, 2007 by trained graduate-level students. The questionnaire consisted of K-GDS, PHQ-15, Barthel Index, and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living. The collected data was analyzed with the SPSS/PC 12.0 program, which was used for frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows 1) 34.1% of participants belonged to the depression group. 2) There were significant relationships between depression and monthly income, somatic symptoms, ADL, IADL, and number of chronic disease. 3) Significant factors influencing depression were somatic symptoms, ADL, and monthly income. Conclusion: The results of this study give useful information for designing interventions and program development for appropriate depression management and care for elderly women.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors associated with stroke patients' quality of life (QOL) and examine the mediating effects of interpersonal relations in the relationships of activities of daily living (ADL) and body image with QOL. Methods: In this study, 160 stroke patients were recruited from an outpatient clinic of a university hospital and rehabilitation clinic of a long-term care hospital. Participants completed a questionnaire which included sociodemographic characteristics, ADL, body image, interpersonal relation, and QOL. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression analysis, and process macro mediation analysis were conducted using SPSS. Results: The mean scores were 91.01 (range 6~100) for ADL, 61.19 (range 40~79) for body image, 87.53 (range 29~123) for interpersonal relations, and 186.67 (range 71~243) for QOL. Multiple regression analyses showed that ADL, body image, interpersonal relations, and participation in group activities after stroke were significantly associated with QOL among stroke patients (p<.05). There were no mediating effects of interpersonal relations in the relationships of ADL and body image with QOL (p>.05). Conclusion: This study showed that there is a need for physical, psychological, and social recovery to improve the QOL of stroke patients.
In this paper, an investigation of weapon tracking performance is shown in regard to improving individual weapon performance of aiming objects. On the battlefield, a battle can last only a few hours, sometimes it can last several days until finished. In these long-lasting combats, a wide variety of factors will gradually lower the visual ability of soldiers. The experiments were focusing on enhancing the degraded aiming performance by applying visual tracking technology to roof mounted sights so as to track the movement of troops automatically. In order to select the optimal algorithm among the latest visual tracking techniques, performance of each algorithm was evaluated using the real combat images with characteristics of overlapping problems, camera's mobility, size changes, low contrast images, and illumination changes. The results show that VTD (Visual Tracking Decomposition)[2], IVT (Incremental learning for robust Visual Tracking)[7], and MIL (Multiple Instance Learning)[1] perform the best at accuracy, response speed, and total performance, respectively. The evaluation suggests that the roof mounted sights equipped with visual tracking technology are likely to improve the reduced aiming ability of forces.
