Evaluation of an Activity-Oriented Extracurricular Science Fair (신나는 과학 놀이 마당 평가 연구)

  • The study aimed to evaluate an activity-oriented extracurricular science program as informal science education through the assessment of opinions of student participants and lead-students and lead-teachers who organized the program. An 'Exciting Science Fair' was designed by science teachers and students and provided for 857 students for two days in early 1998. Students chose a course of science activities designed by different levels of student knowledge and interests. During their own science activity courses, the participating students were grouped as pair of two students and guided and facilitated by lead-students. A survey instrument was developed by researchers and asked respondents' opinions of 121 participating students, 72 lead-students, and 19 lead-teachers to the significance of program goals, degree of goal achievement, and program planning and management system before and after the program. It was found that most student participants, lead-students and lead-teachers satisfied with the efficiency of the program. However, it was recommended that the program should place more emphases on engaging student participants in science activities, strengthening scientific inquiry through activities, and increasing science content related to student daily life. It was also suggested that advertizement of the program be publicized in advance through media, an effect teaching-learning strategy for lead-students be developed, and collaboration among lead-students and lead-teachers be improved.

Antimicrobial Activities of Berry Extract of Domestic Plants on 4 Kind of Pathogenic Microorganism (4종의 식품 부패 미생물에 대한 국내산 자생 식물 열매 추출물의 항균성 탐색)

  • To select new useful domestic plants with antimicrobial activities, thirty five samples of berry plant were distributed from Plant Diversity Research Center in Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. Their extracts with methanol were tested against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes by paper disc method. The methanol extracts from Viburnum dilatatum, Viburnum erosum, Aralia continentalis, Camellia japonica, Acer trumcatam, Arasaema takesimense and Rhysocarpus intermedius were effective against S. aureus and the results were as follows: Viburnum erosum 6.5 mm, Viburnum dilatatum and Aralia continentalis 7.0 mm, Rhysocarpus intermedius 8.0 mm, Acer trumcatum 9.0 mm, Camellia japonica and Arisaema takesimense 9.5 mm. And only the methanol extract from Camellia japonica was effective against L. monocytogenes, 7.0 mm. Antimicrobial activities of E. coli and S. typhymurium were not detected. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of berry of Camellia japonica was examined as 1,250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against S. aureus and as 1,250∼2,500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against L. monocytogenes.

Taxonomical Studies of the Genus Acer in Korea by the Morphological Characteristics of Stipules (탁엽(托葉)의 형태적(形態的) 특징(特徵)에 의한 한국산(韓國産) 단풍나무속(屬)의 분류학적(分類學的) 연구(硏究))

  • Taxonomical studies of the genus Acer in Korea (8 species, 3 varieties and 1 forma) were studied by the morphological characteristics of stipules. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) The stipules of the genus Acer were arranged oppositely with 4 - 10 stipules consisting of simple leaf, compound leaf and unifoliate compound leaf. The venation of stipules were cladodromous, basal reticulate, fibrous and palmately netted vein. The trichoma of stipules were glandula hair, glandular pubescent, sericeous, pilous, vinous, velutinous, tomentose, ciliate and lanate. As the morphological characteristics of stipules in the genus Acer established a strong point in the identification of species. 2) The species in the genus Acer in Korea were classified into six groups; (1) ginnala group (A. ginnala), (2) koreanum group (A. koreanum, A. japonicum, A. pseudosieboldianum var. koreanum), (3) mono group (A. mono, A, palmatum var. sanguineum, A. palamtum var. dissectum, A. palmatum var. dissectum f. aosidare), (4) negundo group (A. negundo), (5) palmatum group (A. palmatum), (6) platanoides group (A. platanoides, A. truncatum) by the morphological characteristics of stipules, 3) The stipules of platanoides group and negundo group were the least evolved types among the species in the genus Acer. 4) The stipules in the genus Acer were made the inner buds that were metamorphosed to the protected functional aspect by the evolution of petiols.

  • Changes in land-use can affect soil organic matter content and fertility. We compared total soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations, soil respiration, and nitrogen availability under three land-use types in central Korea; conversion of old rice field to natural willow-maple (Salix-Acer) forest, conversion of old field to artificial Korean pine (Pines koraiensis) forest, and indigenous oak (Quercus spp.) forest. After 20 years of fallow the area of rice field conversion to forest had higher soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the soil depth of 0-10cm and 10-20cm than the areas of field conversion to Korean pine forest and indigenous forest. In general, soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations decreased with soil depth. Organic matter accumulation as a balance of input and decomposition seemed to be higher in the soil of previous rice field, and carbon and nitrogen accumulation was largely confined to the topsoil. Soil respiration rates were greatest at the area of rice field conversion to forest, and appeared to be related to soil carbon and soil moisture. Soil nitrogen availability measured by the ion exchange resin bag method differed significantly among land-use types; soil inorganic nitrogen ($NH_4{^+}+NO_3{^-}$) and ammonium availability were highest in the soil under indigenous oak forest followed by conversion of old field to artificial Korean pine forest and conversion of old field to natural willow-maple forest.

Research on Functional Paper by using Traditional Dyestuffs (전통 염색 재료를 활용한 기능성 종이 연구)

  • Dyestuffs extracted from fifteen kinds of natural dyeing materials were researched on their antimicrobial performance against 3 kinds of bacteria and 2 kinds of fungi in order to develop conservation/storage materials of traditional and natural dyed papers. The three types of mordants were evaluated by using the same method and then mixed with the dyestuffs to research their antimicrobial performance. With those results, dyed paper was made by mixing mordants with 9 kinds of dyestuffs with excellent antimicrobial performance. Among the dyed papers, Cotinus coggygria, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendri amurense, Rhus javanica and Acer ginnala multiple mordant papers were found to have an antibacterial quality against fungi, while, in the insect repellent experiment using termites, Coptis chinensis and Phellodendri amurense dyed papers were found to have insect repellent qualities. Also, with regard to the research result about the affect of dyeing paper on other materials like metal, Coptis chinensis have relatively stable qualities. Also, the three types of dyeed paper by Cotinus coggygria, Coptis chinensis and Phellodendri amurense, were found to have a tendency to remove harmful gases. Not only can these dyed papers be used for making storage box for cultural properties to prevent various organic artifacts from bio-damaging, but they can also be utilized as functional finishing materials in various spaces.

Production of Gastrodia elata Tuber using Armillaria spp. (Armillaria 속균을 이용한 천마의 생산)

  • The genus Armillaria is important because they produce Gastrodia tubers. Seventy two isolates of Armillaria were obtained from fruit bodies grown on decayed wood in Korea. Twenty four isolates from Pinus koraiensis were identified as A. ostoyae. Two isolates from G. elata growing in the field were identified as A. mellea. Seven isolates from Acer ginnala and Quercus spp. were identified as A. tabescens. Thirty nine isolates were identified as A. gallica. Armillaria gallica was isolated from Quercus spp., Ainus japonica, Vitis amurensis and Prunus sargentii. Armillaria spp. isolates were divided into four groups based on the cultural characteristics. Group II (A. gallica KNU-A110) was better than the other groups for mycelial growth and rhizomorph formation. Isolate KNU-A110 proved to be good for production of G. elata tubers. This fungus forms mycelial fan in the plant tissue and rhizomorphs in contact with G. elata tubers. Gastrodia spp. was found in thirteen sites in Kangweon province in Korea. The plants were divided into three different kinds based on stem color. Plants with stems of brownish orange and greyish yellow were identified as G. elata, and those with greyish green colored stems were identified as G. gracilis. Gastrodia was collected mainly from humus soils rich in leaf debris, and slopes facing south from mid-May to mid-July. Once the new tubers are formed from the ancestry tuber, the ancestry tuber begins to decay. The offspring tuber, apparently gaining nutrients through rhizomorphs, begins to grow in length and slowly to enlarge. It takes three years for the offspring tuber to become ancestry tuber.

A Study on the Changing Pattern of the Petiole's Vascular Branch of Some Acer Species (단풍나무속(屬) 수종(數種)의 엽병(葉柄) 유관속지(維管束枝) 변화형(變化型)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • This study was done to classify 15 species in the genus Acer through tracking of the changing shape of the vascular branch from the base part to the terminal part of petiole by the anatomical method. The basic vascular branches were 3 ea, except A. mandshuricum 3-4 ea. The vascular bundle was separated, moved and connected from the base part to the terminal part of petiol, the number of separated vascular branch was 11-32 ea., the number of connected vascular branch was 0-17 ea., and the ratio of the separated vascular branch to the connected was 0.00-8.00. The maximum number of vascular branch in No, 39 of cross section part was observed in 12 species; A. ginnala and A. buergerianum were No. 11, A. truncatum and A. platanoides were No. 13, A. saccharium was No. 26. The number of the connected vascular branches with the main vascular branch were 0-6, while the number of the separated vascular branch were 0-7. On the ratio of separation to connection of the base vascular branch; "A", "B" and "C", the symmetrical shapes on the basis of "B" were A>BC, AB>C shape. The classical groups by the development of main vascular branch formation were obtained 7 groups of "a" through "g" shape. Especially, A. negundo and A. saccharinum were shown to have central vascular branches with unique changing patterns.

Carbon Storage and Absorption of Trees in the Ecological Restoration Area and Vegetation Conservation Area of Bulamsan Urban Nature Park (불암산 도시자연공원 생태복원지와 식생보전지 수목의 탄소저장량 및 흡수량)

  • We present a quantitative survey of the carbon storage and absorption capacity of tree species in the vegetation conservation and ecological restoration areas of Bulamsan urban nature park in Nowon-gu, Seoul. The density of the sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima) community in the ecological conservation area is approximately 30 individuals/225 ㎡, while a further 20 species, such as Japanese snowbell (Styrax obassia), galcham oak (Quercus aliena), Asian Sweetleaf (Symplocos chinensis f. pilosa), East Asian ash (Fraxinus rhynchophylla), and Korean rhododendron (Rhododendron mucronulatum) are sparsely distributed. In contrast, the ecological restoration sites typically comprised Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica), jolcham oak (Quercus serrata), and East Asian ash (Fraxinus rhynchophylla) plantations, with planting densities of 8.3, 7.7, and 14.3 individuals/25 ㎡ , respectively. Approximately 10 species, including Amur maple (Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala), Korean mountain ash (Sorbus alnifolia), Japanese spice bush (Lindera obtusiloba), and Korean rhododendron (Rhododendron mucronulatum) were identified in the ecologically restored area. The total amounts of carbon stored by the trees in the vegetation conservation and ecological restoration sites are 250.77 and 19.3 t C ha-1, respectively, and the total annual carbon uptakes are 10.28 and 2.33 t C ha-1 yr-1, respectively. The survey results are expected to provide important basic data for monitoring the carbon absorption capacity and carbon balance of green areas in the city.

Effect of Drench Application of Growth Retardants on Growth and Development in Cut Lilies (절화 백합의 생장과 발육에 미치는 생장억제제의 관주처리 효과)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of three different growth retardants for applying pot or bedding plant with 'Rialto', 'Elodie', and 'Raizan'. Ancymidol, uniconazole, and paclobutrazol were applied as a drench at various concentrations. In Oriental hybrid lily 'Rialto', no changes were observed not only plant height but also leaves and flowers in paclobutrazol treatment. But the growth of plant treated with ancymidol was inhibited above 30% compare to control regardless of concentrations. However, numbers of leaf and flower per plant were similar to those of controls. Plant height was similar to nontreated control in $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole treatment but that reduced about 30% in drench application of 5 and $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole. Asiatic hybrid lily 'Elodie' was not different in growth between application of paclobutrazol and nontreatment as 'Rialto'. While, in all ancymidol treatments, plant height was 50~60% shorter than that of control. Also, numbers of leaves were reduced and days to flowering were slightly delayed in $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ancymidol treatment as compared with the control. All traits except plant height of $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole were similar to control but there were differences of statistical significance between 5, $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole drench and nontreated control. Lilium ${\times}$ formolongi 'Raizan' like above two cultivars had no dwarf effect on height in paclobutrazol treatment. In drench application of ancymidol, plant height reduced over 60% than that of control regardless of concentrations. Especially, days to flowering were a little delayed with $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ paclobutrazol treatment. Plant height of $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole was about 26% shorter than that of control, but other traits were no differences between uniconazole treatment and control. In result, the drench application of ancymidol and uniconazole was pretty effective for usage as pot lily without great changes of quantitative traits.

Hwasan Wetland Vegetation in Gunwi, South Korea: with a Phytosociological Focus on Alder (Alnus japonica (Thunb.) Steud.) Forests (군위군 화산습지의 식생: 오리나무림을 중심으로)

  • The Hwasan wetland vegetation is observed at mountain basin (644~780 m a.s.l.) where had become a potential land for indigenous people since prehistoric period. We phytosociologically investigated old-growth alder (Alnus japonica) forests using the $Z\ddot{u}rich$-Montpellier School's method and analyzed their spatial distribution pattern by actual vegetation map. Species performance was determined by using coverage and r-NCD. Viburnum opulus var. calvescens-Alnus japonica community syntaxonomically belonging to the Alnetea japonicae was first described and composed of three subunits: Salix koreensis subcommunity, typical subcommunity, and Pyrus ussuriensis subcommunity. Present plant community was compared with vicariant syntaxa such as Molinia japonica-Alnus japonica community, Rhamno nipponicae-Alnetum japonicae, and Aceri-Salicetum koreensis. Hwasan's alder forest, an alluvial terrace vegetation type on valley fan in the montane zone, is evaluated as vegetation class [I], which is a sort of benchmark plant community potentially on mountain wetlands in southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Simultaneously we suggested an establishment of the national strategy for habitat conservation free from hydrologically radical transform due to military utilization.
