  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a new-nurse education program utilizing both e-learning and instructor demonstration. Methods: From August to December in 2009, the e-learning education program about insulin injection was developed. The control (C) group was educated via instructor demonstration from April 15 to October 6 in 2009, and the experimental (E) group was educated via both e-learning and instructor demonstration from January 5 to October 13 in 2010. After each education, knowledge and educational effectiveness were checked. Results: Satisfaction with the education contents in the E group was significantly higher than those of the C group (Z=-3.72, p<.001), and satisfaction with the education method in the E group was higher than those of the C group (Z=-2.98, p=.003). Usefulness (Z=-3.33, p=.001), application (Z=-2.62, p=.009), and confidence (Z=-2.61, p=.009) in the E group were all higher than those of the C group. 78.9% in the E group reused the e-learning program after the experimental education. Conclusion: Combined educational program with e-learning and instructor demonstration had both merits of online efficiency and face-to-face education. It would be useful especially for new-nurses to improve their nursing skills in accomplishing their roles.

  • Purpose: Although emergency care is one of the most important capabilities for novice nurses, many novice nurses have shown difficulty in emergency care in the clinical field. The purpose of this study was to provide evidence data for the future development of educational programs by analyzing the priorities in emergency care of novice nurses using the Importance-Performance Analysis. Methods: This study was designed as a descriptive survey. The participants were 197 novice nurses who worked in general hospitals from August 1 to 31, 2018. The questionnaire consisted of 'common emergency care', 'cardiovascular emergency care', 'nervous system emergency care', 'respiratory system emergency care', 'communication and teamwork competency'. Results: As a result of this study, 'communication and teamwork' among emergency cares was evaluated as the most important capability in the clinical field. In the Importance-Performance Analysis, a total of 12 items were included in the quadrant A, including 5 items related to 'cardiovascular emergency care', 4 items to 'respiratory system emergency care', 2 items to 'nervous system emergency care' and 1 item to 'common emergency care'. The results showed a need for intensive improvement in items included in quadrant A which are the high importance low performance items. Conclusion: In order to improve the emergency care of novice nurses, a variety of emergency care education programs on the nervous system and respiratory system care should be implemented as well as cardiovascular emergency care education.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe changes in positive psychological capital, organizational commitment and burnout according to work periods for new nurses. Methods: A longitudinal study was done using surveys of 91 nurses from a tertiary hospital located in Seoul, South Korea. Data were collected from these newly graduated nurses during the period from July 2018 to September 2019, three times (2 months, 4 months and 6 months after starting to work). Results: Hope of positive psychological capital decreased after 6 months of work (F=7.11, p=.001) and organizational commitment decreased after 4 months of work (F=15.30, p<.001). Factors influencing participants' burnout included the optimism of positive psychological capital and continuance of organizational commitment. These factors explained 51.3% of the variance in burnout (F=48.47, p<.001). Conclusion: Organizational support for new nurses is urgently needed. It is necessary to develop programs to strengthen the positive psychological capital of newly graduated nurses to reduce their burnout and to help their job adaptation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean Nurse Residency Program (KNRP) in order to facilitate new nurses' transition to clinical practice working at tertiary hospitals in Korea. Methods: The KNRP was developed through a literature review, investigation of NRP cases in United States, two rounds of expert consultation, and appropriateness survey. For appropriateness survey of the program, a questionnaire with 118 items and 14 subcategories including overview and operation of KNRP, education programs, staffing criteria for new nurses' education, preceptor supporting strategies, evaluation standards for new nurse's education, infrastructure, and KNRP benefits was used. Data were collected from 369 nurses including nurse educators, nurse managers, preceptors, and new nurses working at 43 tertiary hospitals in Korea from February 16, 2021 to March 22, 2021. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: Appropriateness score of KNRP was 3.42±0.31 (out of 4) and those of 14 subcategories ranged from 3.18±0.47 to 3.58±0.46. The final version of the KNRP postulated is a one-year program, which is composed of off-job training and on-site training including preceptorship over 3 months, and competency reinforcement and adaptation supporting programs. Conclusion: The application of the one-year KNRP will facilitate new graduate nurses' transition to clinical practice. In order for effective application of the KNRP, cooperative efforts of the government, professional associations, and hospitals are needed.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the changes in stress, occupational stress, and subjective health problems of novice female nurses within the first 18 months of work. Methods: This was a longitudinal study conducted with a secondary data analysis based on the Shift Work Nurse's Health and Turnover (SWNHT) study. The participants were 178 female novice nurses who participated in all 3 data collection activities (on the first day of orientation before ward placement [T0], 6 months after work [T1], and 18 months after work [T2]). The stress, occupational stress, 8 subjective health problems (upper musculoskeletal pain, leg/foot discomfort, depression, anxiety or emotional disorder, sleep disturbance, headache, gastrointestinal disorder, menstrual disorder, and others), and the greatest health problem during the study period were measured, respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 to obtain descriptive statistics. Results: The subjective health of novice female nurses were found to be poor at T1 compared to T0 on both physical (upper musculoskeletal pain, leg/foot discomfort, and sleep disturbance) and psychological health problems (depression and stress). However, the psychological health problems of the participants were alleviated at T2 whereas; physical health problems persisted until T2. Conclusion: Novice nurses had poor health problems 6 months after work. Sleep disturbance and musculoskeletal pain persisted although other health problems such as depression and stress were alleviated over the period. Strategies to prevent and manage different health problems of novice female nurses at different work duration are urgently needed.
