A Study on the Dosimetry of the Total Skin Electron Beam Therapy in Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (피부 T 세포림프종의 전 피부 전자선 치료를 위한 dosimetry 연구)

  • Total Skin Electron Beam Therapy (TSEBT) is one of the most effective treatment methods for superficially disseminated skin cancer or cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. We have treated a patient with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. We have used Stanford technique using six dual field. The nominal energy of electron beam was 4MeV. SSD was 390cm and the gantry angles of dual fields were 76$^{\circ}$ and 104$^{\circ}$. The dose profiles of single field and dual fields were measured with films and a Farmer type ion chamber. The field uniformity was 10% over the patient's surface. During treatment, the patient was placed in six different positions for homogenous dose distribution over the body surface. The areas not directly exposed to the path of the electron beam (soles of feet, perineum and vertex of scalp) were boosted with 7MeV electron beam. During the treatment, lens, fingernails and toenails were shielded.

  • The trajectories for high-energy electrons in water under magnetic fields were calculated approximately by numerical method. A differential equation for electrons under magnetic field was built and the calculation code was devised by Euler method. Using the code, the trajectories for electrons with energies of 3, 5, 10, and 15 MeV in water were calculated in the presence of magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the incident electrons. Since we considered only the energy loss and the directional change for primary electrons, there are errors in this calculation. However, based on the results we were able to explain the variation of dose distributions by the external magnetic fields in water.

  • In this research, how a solar powered HALE (high altitude long endurance) UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can climb and reach mission altitude, 18km, starting from the ground using only solar energy. A glider type aircraft was assumed as a baseline configuration which has wing area of $35.98m^2$ and aspect ratio of 25. Configuration parameters, lift and drag coefficients were calculated using OpenVSP and XFLR5 that are NASA open source programs, and climb flights were predicted through energy balance between available energy from solar power and energy necessary for a climb flight. Minimum time climb flight was obtained by minimizing flight velocities at each altitude and total time and total energy consumption to reach the mission altitude were predicted for different take off time. Also, aircraft moving distances due to westerly wind and flight speed were calculated.

  • Propeller aircraft propelled by an electric propulsion system is gaining a renewed interest because of ever-increasing environmental concern on harmful emissions emitted from conventional jet engines and national energy security. Traditional aircraft sizing methods are not readily applicable to electric propulsion aircraft that utilize a variety of alternative energy sources and power generation systems. This study showcases an electric propulsion aircraft sizing exercise based on a generalized, power based sizing method. A general aviation aircraft is propelled by an electric propulsion system that comprises of a propeller, a high temperature super conducting motor, a Proton Exchange Membrance(PEM) fuel cell system fuelled with hydrogen, and power conditioning equipment. In order to assess the impact of technology progression, aircraft sizing was conducted for two different sets of technology assumptions for electric components, and the results were compared with conventional baseline aircraft.

A Study of Polarity Effect of Parallel Plate Type ionization Chamber with Different Volume (평행평판형 전리함의 두 전극간의 거리에 따른 극성효과 연구)

  • Exposure measurement data with parallel plate ionization chambers were known to depend on the polarity ($k_{pol}$) effect. In this work, the polarity effect were investigated for three parallel plate ionization chambers with different volume. The ionization chamber was fabricated using acrylic plate for the chamber medium and printed circuit board for electrical configuration. The various sizes of the sensitive volumes designed so far were 0.9, 1.9, and 3.1 co. High voltage generator was fabricated using the conventional 9 V batteries to apply the high voltage (300-500 V) to the electrode of the parallel plate ionization chamber. The gap between two electrodes ranged from 3, 6, and 10mm. As the result of our experiment, the polarity effect was within 0.5% in photon beam and 1% to 3.5% in the electron beams. Among electron beams, 16 MeV beam, which had highest energy, showed less polarity effect than electron beams with other energies.

  • A test code was written to apply the EGS5 Monte Carlo code recently published to radiotherapy. This test code was designed to calculate the depth dose in cylindrical phantom for point source model. The evaluation of the test code was peformed by calculating the depth dose curves for high energy electrons of 5, 9, 12, and 15 MeV photons of Co-60 and 10 MV in water and comparing the results with DOSRZ/EGS4 results. In depth dose results, the differences between test code and DOSRZ/EGS4 were estimated to be less then ${\pm}1.5%\;and\;{\pm}3.0%$ approximately for electron and photon beams respectively.

  • In this work we have measured the dose distribution and the percent depth dose of 20 MeV electron beam using the X-OMAT films in order to verify the effects of transverse magnetic field on high energy elecrtron beam in a phantom. The result shows about 30% increase of the percent depth dose at 4.5 cm depth under the transverse magnetic field of 1.5 Tesla at 7.5 cm depth. We have verified that these were in an agreement with other theoretical results.

  • More than eighty thousands of wooden printing blocks of the Tripitaka Koreans are accommodated in the Changkyeonggak which consists of two open structured wooden buildings, Peoppojeon and Sudarajang. These blocks are virtually in pristine state even after three quarters of a millennium. The excellent preservation could be attributed to the careful preparation and meticulous finish of the blocks. But the meteorological environment or microclimate should be one of the key factors for the preservation. To keep the blocks intact as it is or at least do not accelerate the deterioration, we should study the blocks and its microclimatic environment supplied by the Changgyeonggak and the topology of the site. As a Part of this effort we designed a computerized meteorological data acquisition system, which can handle up to 4,096 sensors. A partial but operative installation of 16 temperature/humidity sensors was set up in the Peoppojeon. We hope to have a chance to install a full fledged system in the near future for the compilation of the fuller environmental data base.

  • To purpose of this study is to develop the new type of precast concrete baseplate which is only for bimodal tram. The experiments with real size specimens, which are hollowed precast baseplate, prove the efficacy of new designed baseplate by comparing with the result of RCAHEST. Through tests progressed according to different loading locations, the specimens show the stability by the safety factor of 8~9. Also the results of RCAHEST that is the nonlinear finite element method program, appropriately estimate the occuring crack on concrete, yielding reinforcement and ultimate behavior at failure.

  • In this research, a high temperature superconducting(HTS) motor is designed which is adequate for an electrical aircraft by generating high power density and the potentiality of its application to an aircraft is studied. The designed motor is based on YBCO plates, HTS coils composed of Bi-2223, and ironless air cooled resistive armature. The HTS motor is designed to generate power equivalent to O-360 engine with 180HP at 2700RPM which is used for Cessna and equivalent to CFM56 engine with 18000HP at 5000RPM which is used for B-737. Also, power densities of HTS motors are compared with power densities of aircraft engines so that we can estimate the potentiality of the HTS motor as an aircraft engine.
