Kansas Vegetation Mapping Using Multi-Temporal Remote Sensing Data: A Hybrid Approach (계절별 위성자료를 이용한 미국 캔자스주 식생 분류 - 하이브리드 접근방식의 적용 -)

  • To address the requirements of gap analysis for species protection, as well as the needs of state and federal agencies for detailed digital land cover, a 43-class map at the vegetation alliance level was created for the state of Kansas using multi-temporal Thematic Mapper imagery. The mapping approach included the use of three-date multi-seasonal imagery, a two-stage classification approach that first masked out cropland areas using unsupervised classification and then mapped natural vegetation with supervised classification, visualization techniques utilizing a map of small multiples and field experts, and extensive use of ancillary data in post-hoc processing. Accuracy assessment was conducted at three levels of generalization (Anderson Level I, vegetation formation, and vegetation alliance) and three cross-tabulation approaches. Overall accuracy ranged from 51.7% to 89.4%, depending on level of generalization, while accuracy figures for individual alliance classes varied by area covered and level of sampling.

Changes of Species Diversity and Development of Vegetation Structure during Abandoned Field Succession after Shifting Cultivation in Korea (화전 후 묵밭의 식생 천이에 따른 종다양성 및 식생 구조의 발달)

  • Changes of the species diversity and development of vegetation structure during abandoned field succession after shifting cultivation were investigated in Pyoungchang, Gangwon-Do, Korea. The height of top layer tended to increase rapidly during the earlier successional stages and stabilize in the later successional stage. The heights of top layer in the 10, 20, 50 and 80 year old-field were 4, 9, 18 and 18 m, respectively. In this region, thirty five year after abandonment need for the development to the normal forest formed by 4 stratum structure, tree, sub-tree, shrub and herb layer. Among the vegetation values, Ivc showed a tendency to increase logarithmically, and Hcl a tendency to increase linearly during abandoned field succession. Species diversity showed the peak in mid-successional stages ($10{\sim}20$ year old-field) and declined slightly thereafter. Species diversity was correlated closely with the species richness than the evenness. The most woody species established in the earlier stage ($2{\sim}6$ year old-field) and turned over their dominance step by step during succession. These results support the IFC model proposed by Egler (1954).

A Study on Vegetation Index for Zoning of Natural Ecosystem on Baekdudaegan -From Namdeogyusan to Sosagogae- (백두대간 자연생태계의 지역구분을 위한 식생지수에 관한 연구 -남덕유산 -소사고개 구간-)

  • For the zoning of natural ecosystem, Vegetation Index is calculated from the vegetation data surveyed on Baekdudaegan (from Namdeogyusan to Sosagogae). Five factors-biodiversity, conservation value of the stand, environmental quality, longevity of the stand, site productivity- are considered in the calculation of Vegetation Index. Vegetation Index might be a useful zoning tool for management of Baekdudaegan. For Vegetation Index I, 8 sample plots 12.l% of total 66 sample plots are belong to core area, 21 sample plots 31.8% and 37 sample plots 56.l% are belong to buffer zone and transition area, respectively. For Vegetation Index II, 37 sample plots 41.9% of total 60 sample plots are belong to core area, 19 sample plots 28.8% and 19 sample plots 28.8% are belong to buffer zone and transition area, respectively.

Characteristics of Turbulent Flows and Suspended Sediment Transport in Open-channel with Submerged Vegetation (침수식생 개수로에서 난류 및 부유사 이동 특성)

  • The open-channel flow with submerged vegetation shows distinct features in two separate regions, namely upper and vegetation layers. In the upper layer, the flow is akin to the open-channel flow, while the flow in the vegetation layer is relatively uniform with suppressed turbulence due to vegetation stems. This paper presents laboratory experiments to investigate the characteristics of turbulent flows and suspended sediment transport in open-channel flows with submerged vegetation. An open-channel facility, 0.5 m wide and 12 m long, was used for laboratory experiments. Various discharges were employed with depth ratios of 2~3, and wooden cylinders were used for vegetation. To make equilibrium suspension, sediment particles of median diameter of 75 ${\mu}M$ were fed until capacity condition. Laser Doppler velocimeter was used to measure instantaneous velocity, and direct sampling with vinyl tube was used to measure the concentration of suspended sediment. Using the sampled data, the mean flow and turbulence structures were provided and characteristics of suspended sediment concentration with Rouse number were presented.

  • 본 연구는 수체 내 오염물질을 직접적으로 처리할 수 있는 친자연형 소재와 생물을 통한 처리의 다양한 기술 및 공법 중 식생을 이용한 수질의 정화효율에 대해 조사 하였다. 사용된 식생은 환경부 '하천식물자료집'을 바탕으로 수질정화능력이 있고 다년생으로 안정적인 생육특성을 갖는 식생으로 노랑꽃창포, 부들, 수크령, 질경이택사, 창포를 선정하여 약 13 L 크기의 원통형 반응조내에서 실험을 진행하였다. 선별된 식생들은 물가에 서식하는 식물로 15 cm 마사토를 식재 기반으로 하여 반침수 조건으로 실험을 진행하였다. 유입수는 경기도 용인시 기흥구에 위치한 기흥저수지 샘플과 경기도 화성시에 위치한 황구지천 샘플 혼합액 7 L를 주입하여 유입수 대비 유출수의 COD, T-N, T-P에 대한 저감 효율을 검토하였다. 노랑꽃 창포와 창포의 경우 침수된 부분에 플럭이 발생하여 투명도가 낮은 것으로 확인되었고, 수크령과 질경이택사의 경우 노랑꽃 창포와 창포에 비해 플럭의 발생은 적었지만 투명도는 비교적 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 특히 부들은 다른 식생에 비해 성장이 왕성한 것을 관찰할 수 있었으며, 수체의 탁도 또한 매우 낮아 투명한 것으로 확인되었다. 실험 종료 시점에는 창포의 경우 수체 내에서 잎 자체가 분해되어 식재기반 상부가 검정색으로 혐기화 된 것으로 나타났고, 부들의 경우 플럭이 약간 형성되었으나 투명도가 좋고 성장이 왕성한 특징을 나타내었다. 부들의 경우 COD, T-P의 평균 제거효율이 각각 47.1%, 46.0%로 조사되었고, 노랑꽃창포의 경우 T-N의 평균 제거효율이 63.9%로 선별 된 식생 중 가장 높게 조사되었다. 따라서 수질정화를 위한 공법으로는 부들과 노랑꽃창포가 적용 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

Mangrove Height Estimates from TanDEM-X Data (TanDEM-X 자료를 활용한 망그로브 식생 높이 측정)

  • Forest canopy height can be used for estimate of above-ground forest biomass (AGB) by means of the allometric equation. The remote locations and harsh conditions of mangrove forests limit the number of field inventory data stations needed for large-scale modeling of carbon and biomass dynamics. Although active and passive spaceborne sensors have proven successful in mapping mangroves globally, the sensors generally have coarse spatial resolution and overlook small-scale features. Here we generate a 12 m spatial resolution mangrove canopy height map from TanDEM-X data acquired over the world largest intact mangrove forest located in the Sundarbans. With single-pol. TanDEM-X data from 2011 to 2013, the proposed technique makes use of the fact that the double-bounce scattering that occurs between the water and mangrove trees yields water surface level elevation over mangrove forest areas, thus allowing us to estimate forest height with the assumption of an underlying flat topography. Our observations have led to a large-scale mangrove canopy height map over the entire Sundarbans region at a 12 m spatial resolution. Our canopy height estimates were validated with ground measurements acquired in 2015, a correlation coefficient of 0.83 and a RMSE of 0.84 m. With globally available TanDEM-X data, the technique described here will potentially provide accurate global maps of mangrove canopy height at 12 m spatial resolution and provide crucial information for understanding biomass and carbon dynamics in the mangrove ecosystems.

Experiment for Reduction Effectiveness of Pollutants with the Improvement of Infiltration Ability in Vegetation Filter Strip (식생여과대내 침투능력 향상에 따른 오염물질 저감효과에 대한 실험)

  • Soil layer in vegetation filter strip is one of the very important factor for reduction of non-point pollutants by physical, chemical and biological reactions of it through infiltration process. This study was carried out to prepare more effective vegetation filter strip through modification of soil layer for river water quality improvement. Therefore, the main aims of this study are to compare and evaluate normal (straighten type) and modified (step type) vegetation filter strip, which make artificially change the soil layer to improve infiltration ability, through bench scale experiments. In the results of this study, vegetation filter strip of step type is much more highly reduction effectiveness of pollutants in surface flow compared with normal vegetation filter strip. In case of below effluent, however, it appeared that the vegetation filter strip modified soil layer showed lower reduction effectiveness of pollutants than the general vegetation filter strip. This result was judged because effluent through the vegetation filter strip of step type passed bigger size of aggregate or sand than the vegetation filter strip of straighten type. If we compare it as a definition of pollutant load to estimate total amount of reduced pollutants by vegetation filter strip, reduced pollutants load by step type showed higher than those by straighten type because below effluent amount relied on total effluent amount was higher at step type (4%) than at straighten type (2%). In conclusion, the vegetation filter strip of step type to improve infiltration effect is much more reduction effectiveness of pollutants than vegetation filter strip of straighten type.

Preliminary Research on Domestic Application of Vegetation Drought Response Index (VegDRI) (식생가뭄반응지수(VegDRI) 국내 적용방안 기초연구)

  • 최근 가뭄 모니터링을 위해 과거에 비하여 고해상도의, 물리적으로 기반을 두는 정보가 요구되고 있다. 기존에 주로 활용하고 있는 통계적 방법론 기반의 가뭄지수들은 지니고 있는 한계에 대해 여러 개선과정을 거치고 있으나, 기상변수로부터 지표상의 식생 관련 변수로의 전파 과정에 대한 개별 통계적 가뭄지수 간의 관계 설명이 매우 어렵다. 이와 같은 관계로, 국내 유역에서의 물리적 기반을 둔 고해상도 가뭄 판단방법에 대한 시도가 필요한 시점이다. Brown et al. (2008)은 위성기반 식생정보, 기상학적 가뭄지수, 지형학적 조건을 고려한 식생가뭄반응지수(Vegetation Drought Response Index; 이하 VegDRI)를 개발하였다. 학습자료에 대해 CART 기반의 경험적 모델을 구축하여, 격자마다 근-실시간 자료를 적용한 VegDRI를 산출하여 고해상도의 지도를 산출하는 방식을 제시하였다. VegDRI는 NCDC의 U.S. Drought Monitoring에 활용되고 있으며, NOAA의 Drought Task Force Assessment Protocol에서는 가뭄 모니터링의 기준으로 설정되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내에 VegDRI를 적용하고자 필요한 자료수집 및 전처리 과정을 거쳐 결과를 도출하였다. 기상청 ASOS 기상관측소에서 얻은 기상변수, MODIS 위성으로부터 추출된 정규식생지수(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index; NDVI), 지형학적 정보와 기상학적 가뭄지수(SPI, PDSI)를 기계학습으로 모델링하여 VegDRI를 산출하였다. 산출된 VegDRI 공간분포도에 대하여 기존에 활용되던 유관기관의 가뭄 판단방법과의 유사성과 차이점을 비교 검토하여 적용성을 평가하였다.

  • 저영향개발기법은 자연의 물순환에 미치는 영향을 최소로 하여 개발하는 것을 의마하며 개발로 인한 토지, 물, 대기에 미치는 영향을 경감시키기 위한 친생태적인 우수관리 혹은 토지개발기법을 의미한다. 국내에서는 2012년부터 가이드라인 및 매뉴얼을 제작하여 신도시개발 및 구도시의 환경사업에서 저영향개발기법을 적용하여 우수유출 저감 및 비점오염원 감소, 물순환 등을 환경적 이점이 나타나고 있다. 그러나 국내에서 적용하는 저영향개발기법은 미국 및 유럽의 시설구조를 적용하였으므로, 국내실정에 맞도록 저영향개발기법을 수정 보완하여 유출저감효과를 모의해보고자 한다. 강우발생시 고농도의 도시비점오염원은 차도 및 보도를 중심으로 유출되어 빗물받이를 거쳐 우수관으로 유입된다. 본 연구에서는 차도와 보도 사이의 식수대에 적용가능하도록 식생수로와 침투도랑을 연계한 식생도랑을 설치하여 도로에서 발생하는 고농도의 비점오염원을 저감하고자 하였다. 선행사례로 적용된 공공청사를 대상으로 모니터링 및 모델링을 실시하여 유출저감 및 비점오염원 저감효과를 검토하고, 식생도랑을 적용할 경우의 유출저감효과 및 비점오염저감효과와 비교검토하여 국내실정에 맞는 저영향개발기법을 개발하고자 한다.

A Study on the plant monitoring for artificial wetlands in the rivers (하천의 인공습지에 대한 식생변화 모니터링 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to compare and analyze plant monitoring results of 2012 and 2013 for three artificial wetlands of Binae, Sedo, and Okpo areas in Namhan river, Keum river, and Nakdong river respectively. As the results, the Binae wetland in 2013 shows the same environment with 2012, that is, Willow and Common reed were dominant and the distributed plants in the wetland were Phragmites japonica Steud, Carex dispalta Boott, and Humulus japonicus in lowland of river side. Especially, Humulus japonicus was increased in summer season and Willow was increased in lowland of 초원. In Okpo wetland, Water chestnut was appeared in 2013 which it was not in 2012. Reed distribution was reduced in 2013 comparing to 2012 but Pussy willow distribution was not changed in 2013. In Sedo wetland, Secondary grassland was artificially planted in 2013 and so the colony was changed to Chinese Lespedeza and also most of plant colony was changed to Colt's-tail. Therefore, we can know that wetted transition rather than dried transition will be occurred in the Binae wetland. However, the Okpo wetland has monotonic change and so the transition will be proceeded with long time. The Sedo wetland showed wetted and dried transitions exist together. Therefore, the wetland will be changed to Reeds, Common reed, and Willow colonies.
