Flora of Uiryeng Area - Mainly based on Mt. Jagul-san, Mt. 676 Highland, Mt. Byeokhwa-san, Mt. Bangeo-san - (의령 지역의 식물상 - 자굴산, 676고지, 벽화산, 방어산을 중심으로 -)

  • The flora of vascular plants in the mountains located in the Uiryeong-gun area, in the South province of the Korean Peninsula, such as Jagul-san(897.1 m), 676 Highland(676 m), Byeokhwa-san(522 m), and the Bangeo-san(530.4 m), was investigated between April 2008 and August 2009. These investigations found 580 taxa consisting of 496 species, 1 subspecies, 77 varieties, and 6 forms, found within 319 genera under 103 families. The count totaled at 744 taxa(16.2% of all vascular plant taxa in Korea), which was made up of 648 species, 3 subspecies, 81 varieties, and 12 forms, found within of 362 genera under 109 families, when voucher specimens from the previous research studies were added. Forests of the investigated areas were generally composed of mixed Pinus densiflora and Quercus sp. The areas with comparatively excellent vegetation were the valley neighboring Baekun-sa(temple) (in the eastern slope of Mt. Jagul-san), the southwest slope of Mt. 676 Highland, the eastern slope of Mt. Byeokhwa-san, and the northern slope of Mt. Bangeo-san. 10 families were collected in abundance: Compositae, Graminae, Leguminosae, Liliaceae, Rosaceae, Cyperaceae, Labiatae, Polygonaceae, Ranunculaceae, and Violaceae these families made up 50% of all collected taxa. 19 taxa were endemic to the area, including Salix hallaisanensis H.Lev, S. koriyanagi Kimura, Aconitum austrokoreense Koidz, A. pseudolaeve Nakai, Clematis trichotoma Nakai, Thalictrum uchiyamai Nakai, Stewartia pseudocamellia Maxim, Philadelphus schrenkii Rupr., Lespedeza ${\times}$ robusta Nakai, Vicia chosenensis Ohwi, Euonymus trapococca Nakai, and Angelica cartilagino-marginata var. distans(Nakai) Kitag. Eight of the taxa were rare and endangered plants, as designated by the Korea Forest Service, including Jeffersonia dubia(Maxim.) Baker & S. Moore and Viola diamantiaca Nakai. 38 taxa of alien plants were found. Vegetation of the surveyed areas falls in the South province of the Korean Peninsula. Of all the taxa collected, 463 taxa(10.06% of all vascular plants in Korea) are considered useful plants, 231 taxa are edible, 193 taxa have medicinal uses, 65 taxa are used ornamentally, 234 taxa are important forage, 3 taxa are used as an industrial raw material, 17 taxa are used for timber, 18 taxa contain useful dyes, and 7 taxa are used for fiber.

Effects of Simulated Acid Rain on Growth and Antioxidant System in French Marigold (Tagetes patula L.) (인공산성비가 만수국(Tagetes patula L.)의 생육 및 항산화 작용에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of simulated acid rain (SAR) on growth and antioxidant system in french marigold (Tagetes patula L.). Plants were subjected to four levels of SAR (pH 5.6, 4.0, 3.0, 2.0) in the growth chambers for 2 weeks. SAR decreased both plant height and plant dry weight of french marigold. As the pH levels decreased from 5.6 to 2.0, the content of MDA highly increased linearly. The ratios of dehydroascorbate/ascorbate and oxidized glutathione/reduced glutathione were significantly increased with decreasing pH levels. The enzyme (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase etc.) activities of the plant affected by SAR were increased as the pH decreased. Based on the results, SAR caused oxidative stress in french marigold and resulted in significant reduction in plant growth. Biochemical protection responses might be activated to prevent the plant from damaging effects of oxidative stress generated in SAR.

Effect of Simulated Acid Rain on Antioxidants and Related Enzymes in Garden Balsam (Impatiens balsamina L.) (봉선화(Impatiens balsamina L.)에 대한 pH 수준별 처리가 항산화 물질 및 관련 효소 활성에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the effects of simulated acid rain (SAR) on growth and biochemical defense responses of plant, garden balsam (Impatiens balsamina L.) was subjected to four levels of SAR based on pH (5.6, 4.0, 3.0, 2.0) and placed in the growth chambers for 2 weeks. SAR drastically inhibited both height and dry weight of garden balsam. The content of total carotenoid was tended to decrease, but the level of malondialdehyde was significantly increased by SAR. As the pH levels decreased from 5.6 to 2.0, the content of dehydroascorbate and oxidized glutathione of the plant were significantly increased. The enzyme (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase etc.) activities of the plant affected by SAR were increased as the pH decreased. The results indicate that garden balsam may receive oxidative stresses by the application of SAR and by which the plant growth can be significantly retarded. A biochemical protective mechanism might be activated to nullify the oxidative stresses generated through SAR.

Effect of Ultraviolet (UV-B) on Antioxidants and Antioxidative Enzymes in Garden Balsam(Impatiens balsamina L.) (자외선(UV-B)이 봉선화(Impatiens balsamina L.)의 항산화제 및 항산화 효소에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the effects of ultraviolet(UV-B) on growth and biochemical defense responses of plant, garden balsam (Impatiens balsamina L.) was subjected to enhanced UV-B irradiation [daily dose: 0.02 (No UV-B) and 11.34 (enhanced UV-B) kJ $m^{-2}$ ; $UV-B_{BE}$] for 3 weeks. Enhanced UV-B drastically inhibited leaf area as well as dry weight of garden balsam. The content of malondialdehyde was significantly increased by about 50% after 3 weeks of UV-B irradiation. The ratios of dehydroascorbate/ascorbate and oxidized glutathione/reduced glutathione were also considerably increased by UV-B irradiation. Three major polyamines of garden balsam leaves: putrescine, spermidine and spermine were observed. All polyamine contents were increased with UV-B irradiation. The enzyme (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase etc.) activities of garden balsam were increased by the UV-B enhancement. Based on the results, enhanced UV-B caused oxidative stress in garden balsam and biochemical protection responses might be activated to prevent from damaging effects of oxidative stress generated by UV-B irradiation.

  • The depletion of stratospheric ozone is regarded as a major environmental threat to plant growth and ecosystem. The ozone depletion has caused plants to be exposed to an increased penetration of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation in the 280-320 nm wavelength range. Enhanced UV-B radiation may have influence on plants biological functions in many aspects including inhibition of photosynthesis, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, changes in morphology, phenology, and biomass accumulation. To cope with the damage by UV radiation, plants have evolved to have protective mechanisms, such as photorepair, accumulation of UV-absorbing compounds, leaf thickening and activation of antioxidative enzymes. The objective of this review is to address the effects of enhanced UV-B on plant growth, UV-B action mechanisms and protection and protection mechanisms in plants.

Development of natural sunscreen using plant extracts (식물 추출물을 이용한 천연 자외선 차단제 개발)

  • In this study, an experiment was conducted to develop a sunscreen with antioxidant effects by simultaneously investigating the antioxidant and UV protection capabilities of various plant extracts. First, to investigate the UV-blocking ability of 33 kinds of plant extracts, the absorbance spectrum between the UV wavelength of 280 to 400 nm was investigated. Arrowroot, graviola, wheat sprout, sangbaek skin, thorn meal, lacquer, etc. 11 species were selected. The total polyphenol content, total flavonoid content, and DPPH radical scavenging activity of the selected plant extracts are measured to examine the degree of antioxidant activity, and from this, it is a plant extract that has excellent UV protection and antioxidant activity at the same time. The species was selected. A gel-shaped cream is prepared by mixing the selected gold, hops, and licorice extracts in a ratio of 1:1:1, and the UV protection effect of this cream is measured when the cultured cells are irradiated with UV rays. Determined by the method. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the selected mixture of plant extracts complemented each other in terms of ultraviolet absorption ability and increased cell damage protection effect. Through these results, it was confirmed that it was possible to develop a sunscreen with an antioxidant effect if the antioxidant and sunscreen capabilities of various plant extracts were determined at the same time.

Cross-Protection Effectiveness of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) Isolates Associated with Satellite RNA for Prevention of CMV Disease in Pepper Plants (Satellite RNA 보유 Cucumber mosaic virus(CMV)의 고추 CMV병에 대한 교차방어 효과)

  • Two attenuated Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) isolates, Paf-CMV and Rs2-CMV that had been selected from CMV isolates associated with satellite RNA (satRNA) were tested for cross-protection effect in pepper plants. The viruses selected as attenuated strains appeared to be identical serologically and physically to the challenge virus (Mf-CMV), but they were lower in the dilution end-point of infectivity of crude sap than Mf-CMV When symptoms were observed in several indicator plants after inoculation, Paf-CMV and Rs2-CMV were symptomless or showed mild mosaic symptoms while another satRNA isolate Ap-CMV developed severe mosaic symptoms on the leaves as Mf-CMV. The nucleotide sequences of the satRNAs were determined by sequencing full-length cDNA clones. Paf-, Rs2- and Ap-satRNAs were 386, 335, and 347 nucleotides long, respectively, The sequences were then compared with the other known Y-satRNA, revealing that nucleotide sequences of the satRNAs consisted of 5'- and 3'-terminal conserved regions. However variations occurred on the middle regions of the sequences, especially those related to symptom interference, showing significant differences between Paf-satRNA and other isolates. Infectious transcripts of Paf-satRNA and Rs2-satRNA induced mild mosaic symptoms in pepper plants when supported by genomic RNAs of Mf-CMV. Under greenhouse conditions, Paf-CMV and Rs2-CMV were tested for cross-protection effect in pepper and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv, Xanthi nc) plants against Mf-CMV. No symptoms were developed on the plants vaccinated with Paf-CMV until 3 weeks after inoculation with the virulent strain; however another attenuated isolate, Rs2-CMV, showed less effectiveness in cross-protection. Depending on the concentration of the challenged virus, symptoms sometimes appeared later in the upper leaves. However, in plants challenged with low concentrations (below 0.2 mg/ml) of the challenge inoculum, symptoms caused by the virulent strain did not develop on the plants vaccinated with Paf-CMV. In the field experiments, the number of pepper plants with severe mosaic symptoms in the control plots was progressively increased after transplanting and reached approximately 50% after 50 days. On the other hand, the incidence of mosaic disease appeared very low on the plants that had received the protective inoculation with Paf-CMV.

Increase in 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutarly Coenzyme A Reductase mRNA Level in Tomato by Fungal Elicitors and Mechanical Wounding (Fungal Elicitor와 기계적 상해에 의한 토마토 HMGR mRNA 증가)

  • 3-hydroxy-3-methyglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR)는 phytoalexin을 포함하는 수 많은 isoprenoid화합물의 생합성을 조절하는 효소이다. 토마토의 경우 sesquiterpenoid phytoalexin류가 식물방어를 위한 반응산물로서 축적되는 것이 알려져 있다. Verticil-lium albo-atrum이나 Fusarium oxysporum으로부터 추출한 elicitor를 토마토의 배양세포에 처리하는 경우 처리량의 증가에 따른 2.7kb 크기의 HMGR mRNA의 상당한 유도증가가 토마토의 HMG2 DNA를 이용한 northern hybridization에 의해 관찰되었다. 토마토의 잎, 뿌리, 줄기 등에 기계적 상해를 가하는 경우에서도 HMGR mRNA는 2단계를 걸쳐 증가함이 관찰되었다. HMGR mRNA는 양 실험의 경우 모두 9시간에서 12시간 사이에서 최대발현됨이 관찰되었다.

Systemic Acquired Resistance in Plants (전신획득저항성에 의한 식물병 방어기작)

  • Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is a form of systemic immunity that prevents secondary infections of distal uninfected parts of plants by related or unrelated pathogens. SAR is mediated by several SAR-inducing chemicals or mobile signals that accumulate after pathogen infection. Several chemicals that move systemically have already been identified as SAR-inducing factors, despite the fact that the early mobile signal remains unclear. These chemicals can be transported into either the apoplastic or symplastic compartments. Many of the chemicals associated with SAR remain unknown in terms of their transport routes. There is recent evidence that azelaic acid (AzA) and glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) are transported via plasmodesmata (PD) channels, which regulate the symplastic route. In contrast, salicylic acid (SA) is preferentially transported from pathogen-infected to uninfected parts via the apoplast. The pH gradient and SA deprotonation lead to apoplastic accumulation of SA before it accumulates in the cytosol. Moreover, there is evidence that the mobility of SA over a long distance is crucial for SAR and that the partitioning of SA into the symplast and cuticles is controlled by transpiration. Further research has shown that a portion of the total SA in leaves is partitioned into cuticular waxes. The purpose of this review is to discuss the role of SAR-inducing chemicals and the regulation of transport in SAR.

노두 수침엑스의 위염 및 위궤양에 대한 효과

  • 위염(gastritis), 위궤양(gastric ulcer)은 소화기 질환중에서 가장 빈도수가 높은 질병으로 위장관 점막이 위산에 의해 소화되어 버리므로서 궤양을 형성하는 상태를 말한다. 위염 및 위궤양의 발생빈도가 높은 것에 비해 발생원인은 정확히 밝혀져 있지 않으며 대체로 공격인자와 방어인자의 불균형 즉, 공격인자의 증가나 방어인자의 약화 또는 세균에 의한 감염에 의해 발생되는 것으로 알려져 있다. 일련의 식물엑스에 대하여 항위얌 및 항궤양효능에 관한 검색을 실시하여 노두의 M?H엑스가 현저한 효과가 있음을 예지하였으므로 그에 대하여 보다 구체적인 실험을 실시하였다. 즉 MeOH 엑스를 Hexane, CHCl$_3$, BuOH로 계통적으로 추출하여 상기의 분획 및 잔사인 물분획을 제조하여 이에 대한 실험을 실시하였다.
