This study was conducted to evaluate both temporal and spatial dynamics of phytoplankton community and environmental parameters in a newly made reclaimed esturine lake (L. Hwaong). Monthly sampling was conducted at 4 sites covering the longest transect of longitudinal gradient of the lake from June to November, 2002. Total 5 classes 8 orders 26 families 83 genus 192 species were identified at all study sites during the study period. Phytoplankton total cell density ranged 24${\sim}$ 1,882 cells $mL^{-1}$ and highly varied both temporally and spatially. Total cell density was significantly related with salinity, pH, BOD, COD, SS, TN and TP concentration. Diatom density also was significantly correlated with salinity, SS, BOD, COD and TN concentration, Although there was spatial difference, a longtudinal gradient appeared in phytoplankton cell density, Chl-a, TN and TP concentration from the mouth of river in June and August. In conclusion, phytoplakton community structure was dominated by diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), and appeared to be largely influenced by salinity, precipitation, and nutrients during the summer and the fall.

To investigate the effect of yellow dust on phytoplankton, a field survey and physiological experiments were carried out in the waters near Taean Peninsula from April 22 to 26, 2006, when yellow dust occurred. Phytoplankton populations during the yellow dust period were in the range of $26{\sim}290{\times}10^3cells{\cdot}L^{-1}$, a somewhat low standing crop. An increase in diatoms (a main taxonomic group), especially benthic diatoms such as Paralia sulcate, a typical species for active mixed sea water areas, was also remarkable. In addition, the Chl-a concentration after yellow dust exceeded the Chl-a concentration change range according to the tide before yellow dust. As the concentration of yellow sand increased in a yellow sand treatment experiment, primary productivity decreased, and the maximum assimilation number showed the same tendency. In the 48h culture experiment, primary productivity of the test group was lower than that of the control group at the early stage (T0) of yellow sand treatment, but after 48 hours (T48), the test group showed higher primary productivity than the control group. In particular, the primary productivity of the test group significantly increased to 321 % after 48 hours. Therefore, strong physical environment accompanied by yellow dust may temporarily inhibit the growth of phytoplankton in the waters adjacent to China in the early stage of yellow dust, but the formation of stable water mass has also been identified as a potential factor promoting the growth of phytoplankton.

In this study, organic matters production was calculated with long term data in Wando costal area where was selected for non influent of fresh water. The objective of this study was to evaluate relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton and, between phytoplankton and organic matter. The result of DIN was the highest with 0.138 mg/L in winter season and the lowest with 0.052 mg/L in summer season. Similarly, DIP was shown to be 0. 017 mg/L in winter and 0.011 mg/L in summer. Limiting nutrient was revealed with nitrogen in Wando costal area. Specially in summer season, nitrogen limitation was the greatest with 10.5 of N/P ratio. Chl. -a was increased 80%, 108% in spring and summer compare with winter. COD was the lowest with 0.84 mg/L in winter and the highest with 1.10 mg/L in summer. The interrelation between nutrients and Chl. -a was high. Relationship $coefficient(r^2)$ were 0.93(P<0.05), 0.89(P <0.05) between DIN and Chi. -a, DIP and Chl. -a. This results suggest dissolved nutrients might be utilized at the production of phytoplankton. Also Relationship $coefficient(r^2)$ was 0.77(P<0.05) between Chl. -a and COD. COD production rate was calculated with regression equation. The COD production rate was 17% in winter and 36% in summer. It was revealed nutrients were decreased according to temperature increasing and then Phytoplankton and organic matter were increased. The Relationship of Nutrients, Chl. -a and COD was very high.

This paper dealt with the disinfection performance by Ultra-Violet Light Emitting Diode (UV LED) for a phytoplankton as a basic study for the development of a low-energy consumption ballast water treatment system. UV LEDs having peak wavelength of 255nm, 265nm and 280nm were used in the experiment. UV LED modules with driving circuit were fabricated, and optical and electrical characteristics of them were analyzed. The disinfection performance for phytoplankton depending on the UV wavelength was evaluated by comparing the number of phytoplankton before and after the UV treatments. The experimental result showed that the highest disinfection wavelength for the phytoplankton was 265nm.
The effects of ultrasonication on phytoplankton were investigated in two ponds in which physicochemical and biological water quality was similar, one as a treatment and the other as a control. The samples were collected from August 18 to September 30 in 2003. Traditional morphological analysis showed that Bacillariophyceae dominated phytoplankton community in both ponds. The abundance of Cyanophyceae was lower in the phytoplankton community of the sonicated pond than that of control pond. We used DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) to analyze the diversity and change of phytoplankton community in two ponds. The DGGE banding patterns of 16S rRNA gene and sequence analysis demonstrated that Oscillatoria acuminata and CFB (Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides) group bacterium appeared in the treated pond, and the control pond was dominated by Synechococcus sp. and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. Especially, Pseudanabaena sp. dominated during the ultrasonic cessation in the treated pond. The DGGE profiles of 18S rRNA gene and sequence analysis showed that the treated pond was dominated by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and the control pond by C. reinhardtii and Pteromonas protracta. In conclusion, the ultrasonication affected the reduced growth of cyanobacteria, particularly Pseudanabaena.
The feeding behavior of 1-year-old silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.) on phytoplankton species in a shallow hypertrophic lake was studied from 22 May to 18 September, 1997. Over the experimental period, the filter-pore sizes of the fish, the total biomass of the phytoplankton and the water temperature in each enclosure changed little with time. The fish biomass in each enclosure increased with time, while their percentage of weight gain correlated negatively to the stocking density, due perhaps to competition for prey. An analysis of gut contents of silver carp showed a strong similarity between the algal communities in the foregut and the water, and was significant for the fish enclosure with a low density (p<0.05). The presence of silver carp rarely suppressed the abundance of phytoplankton such as Oscillatoria, Anabaena and Melosira even at high ingestion levels. There were weak relationships between the IU values of each phytoplankton and the selectivity of fish on them (r = 0.001, p>0.5). There was no doubt that the silver carp fed unselectively when cyanobacteria populations were high, even though the selectivity index for diatoms was slightly higher than those for cyanobacteria, green algae and cryptomonads. Improvements in methodologies are needed to clearly understand and generalize the feeding behavior of silver carp.
Primary productivity was determined by using $^{13}C$ tracer according to different cell size of phytoplank-ton through in situ incubation experiments in upper stream of the Lake Shihwa. The average concentration of chlorophyll a was 14 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ demonstrating an eutrophic water. The ratio of POC/Chl-a was lower than 30, reflecting that the origin of organic matter might be mainly phytoplankton. The primary productivity was 93.9 mgC m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ at St. 1, which was about 40-fold lower than the average value of the lake (3,972 mgC m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$) determined by Choi et al. (1997) before opening of gate but it was higher than the average primary productivity (3.98 mgC m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$) reported by KOWACO in 1993 before constructing dam. The fractionated size (20 ${\sim}$ 53 ${\mu}m$) of phytoplankton community account for 51% of total primary productivity, indicating the highest assimilation rate. This study suggest that $^{13}C$ tracer methodology should be applied as a useful approach for the water ecological research in the future.

In spite of the global importance of primary production of phytoplankton, some primary production data in Korean coastal waters still need to be better processed. The daily rates of water column primary production is generally estimated by integrating the primary production per unit volume over time and depth, but efforts for time integration algorithm have been conducted insufficiently. In this study a mathematical equation evaluating daily primary production integrated over time of a day is proposed and the effectiveness of the model is tested on Saemangeum Lake. The daily primary productions computed with the proposed equation were nearly the same with the results numerically integrated by substituting solar irradiance data. It was suggested that better estimation of primary production would be obtained by using monthly or weekly means of solar irradiance rather than more variable daily data. Because of the vertically heterogenous distribution of phytoplankton, it's hard to integrate the equation over depth to give the daily rates of primary production per unit area of water surface. However, the problem would be solved if, after the vertical distribution of phytoplankton was classified into several patterns and reduced to mathematical formula, every composite function of time integrated equation and chlorophyll distribution equation was integrated successfully.
The effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the characteristics of algae-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) was examined by comparing the biodegradability and DOM fraction distribution of algal DOM before and after UV exposure. Algal DOM from two axenic cultures of Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillatoria agardhii were irradiated for 24 h at a UV intensity of 42 W/$m^2$. A complete degradation of algal DOM during the UV exposure did not occur, remaining at constant concentrations of dissolved organic carbon(DOC). After UV exposure, however, microbial degradations were reduced by 17% in M. aeruginosa and 53% in O. agardhii, respectively, and decomposition rates also were two times lower in UV exposed algal DOM. In addition, the chemical compositions of algal DOM altered substantially after UV radiation exposure. The proportions of hydrophilic bases (HiB; protein-like DOM) decreased considerably in both algal DOM sources after UV exposure (16.8% and 20.0% of DOM, respectively), whereas those of hydrophilic acids (HiA; carboxylic acids-like DOM) increased as much as the decrease of the HiB fraction. Capillary ion electrophoresis (CE) analysis showed that several carboxylic acids increased significantly after UV exposure, further confirming an increase in HiA fractions. The results of this study clearly indicate that algal DOM can be changed in its chemical composition as well as biodegradability without complete degradation by UV radiation.
The interrelationships between distribution of phytoplankton and hydrographical conditions were studied from December 1983 to July 1984 in Yeongil Bay. The temporal variation of phytoplankton abundance seems to be mainly influenced by the vertical stability of water column and the freshwater run-off accompanied with possible nutrient input. The temporal progression of dominant species shows general succession pattern, especially skeletonema costatum was found a dominant species in each month. Although the differences between concentration of chlorophyll a and abundance of phytoplankton may be caused by cell size variation, during the study period they show felatively good linear manner. The phytohydrographic region based on multivariate analysis reflects the relationships between hydrographical condition and distribution pattern of phytoplankton.
