Characteristics of Entertainment Program Subtitles and Effects on the Audience's Perception : Text Analysis of JTBC (예능프로그램 자막의 특성과 수용자 인식에 미치는 영향 : JTBC <비정상회담> 텍스트 분석)

  • Subtitles in entertainment programs have extended the roles from providing additional explanation and complementary sound effect to maximizing amusement and impression as the type which triggers the audience's interest. This study examined the characteristics of the subtitles and the effects on the audiences, mainly focused on of JTBC. Based on the result of the content analysis, the interested subtitles are continuously presented in each episode (10~20%) compared to the proportion of the total captions. Producers have repeatedly used the nickname of the cast members to construct and reinforce the character of them. The text analysis shows that the audience's perception about the cast is mainly influenced by the subtitles. The producers intentionally use the subtitles and subjectively intervene in the entertainment programs. The subtitles have a major effect on the audience's perception and image formation. Producers should be more prudent about their use of subtitles and viewers, on the other hand, must interpret the meaning of subtitles, as active information consumers.

  • Many stars are delivering various contents such as real time talks through Internet personal broadcasting to communicate with fans. For stars and entertainment companies that expect the effect of communicating with fans through Internet broadcasting, it can be said that it is important to grasp viewers' viewing motivation and satisfaction. Thus, we analyzed the viewing motivation and satisfaction of Chinese viewers' Internet personal broadcasting of famous celebrities based on the uses and gratifications approach. To this end, an online survey was conducted, and as a result, 'emotional motivation' and 'functional motivation' were found as Chinese viewers' motivation for viewing Internet personal broadcasting of famous celebrities. In addition, it was found that viewers' satisfaction increased as the viewers' 'emotional viewing motivation' increased. From the results of this study, it seems that a strategy of subdividing programs by reflecting the audience characteristics such as age and occupation is needed. It can be a way to expand the number of viewers and the intended broadcasting effect by designing and producing programs for personalized celebrity internet broadcasting by segmenting audiences.

A Study on the Relationship between the Evaluation of Morality on the Korean Drama Characters and the Drama Enjoyment and Quality Evaluation by Foreign Audience (외국 시청자들의 한국 드라마 등장인물에 대한 도덕성 평가와 드라마 '흥미도'와 '질 평가'와의 관계 분석)

  • In this study, we examined how the United States, Chinese, and Japanese viewers perceive the morality of the main characters in the family drama 'Take Care of Mom' and the influence of the perceived morality has on drama enjoyment and quality evaluation. Results show that the viewers from all three countries evaluated 'Hoonjae' favorably and evaluated selfish older brother, 'Hyung Kyu', unfavorably. This means there are common norms that exist in all three countries for judging the good and evil in a drama. However, the main female characters that played opposing characteristics were evaluated differently from all three countries. This is because the relationship between parents and children, and the role of mother and woman were perceived differently from each country. These results support the argument that consumption of drama may differ by viewer's cultural background. Additionally, the research hypothesis that 'moral evaluation of major characters will influence the drama enjoyment and evaluation of the drama quality' was not supported in China and Japan, and was only supported by the U.S. viewers.

  • 방송의 디지털화에 따라 다매체, 다채널뿐만 아니라 기존의 단방향 방송 수신에서 방송통신망 연동을 통한 다양한 수신 단말의 수용 등 복잡한 형태로 방송환경이 빠르게 변하고 있다. 특히, 제한된 채널 선택만으로 방송 프로그램을 시청하는 수동적 시청에서 벗어나 원하는 시간에 원하는 프로그램을 시청하고자하는 사용자 요구 증대가 방송환경의 진화를 촉진하는 중요한 요소의 하나가 되고 있다. 본 고에서는 이렇게 복잡하게 진화되고 있는 새로운 방송환경에서 시청자가 좀 더 편리하고 효율적으로 원하는 방송 콘텐츠를 시청할 수 있도록 하는 새로운 방송 서비스로 주목 받고 있는 맞춤형방송(personalized TV ser-vices)에 대해서 다룬다. 맞춤형방송은 방송 스케줄에 제한 받지 않고 원하는 시간에, 다양한 단말에서, 시청자가 기호에 맞게 방송 콘텐츠를 소비할 수 있는 개인 맞춤형 서비스를 제공한다. 본 고에서는 이러한 맞춤형방송 서비스를 위한 민간 국제표준인 TV-Anytime Forum의 표준 기술과 표준화 동향을 분석 소개하고자 한다.

  • Current communication and broadcasting services are moved to integrated convergence service. So IPTV(Internet Protocol based TeleVision) services are growth rapidly. Traditional TV were provide simplex service. but IPTV will provide duplex service that is possible of interaction with TV and audience.   • The development of the latest media technology has changed the traditional broadcasting system. The traditional broadcasting system, which was operated by the mass media and the terrestrial broadcasters, is now transformed to the viewer-centered and bidirectional media through the convergence of internet and mobile. In terms of broadcasting environment, the function of the traditional TVs has been changed to the Smart TVs combined with an open platform which not only deliver visual contents, but also supply various applications and additional information linking the content providers and viewers. This ongoing broadcasting environmental change has made it possible for viewers to participate in the programs such as reality shows or sports events through SNS, texting or phone calls. Therefore, the purpose of this experiment is to present the ways to promote easier and more convenient viewer-participation in the programs by applying mobile messenger to existing broadcasting system in order to enhance the involvement of broadcasters and viewers of the programs and to diversify the roles of content providers and viewers in broadcasting.

  • TV 드라마에서 화면구도는 연출의도와 메시지를 전달하는 주요한 경로이다. 공간의 배치에 따라 시청자가 이를 인지, 해석, 수용하기 때문이다. 이에 연구자는 TV 드라마에 나타난 화면구도를 분석하여 구체화함으로써, 향후의 TV 드라마 제작과 해독에 기여 하고자 한다. 이를 위해 화면구도로 연구를 진행하여 미학적 근거를 찾고자 한다.

Impact of Pay TV Market Structure and Competition on Digital Switch Over of Cable TV (유료방송의 시장구조와 경쟁이 케이블 TV의 디지털 전환에 미치는 영향)

  • Cable TV with largest subscription base in pay TV market has difficulty in managing the task of digital switch over. This study analyzed the factors in delay of cable TV switch over and examined the impact of pay TV market structure and competition. The delaying factors turned out to be the lack of incentives and resources of cable TV operators, insufficient policy measures and acceptance tolerance issues of subscribers. Since cable TV operators with monopolistic status in pay TV market had continuous profit from analog service, they were not responsive to digital switch over which requires additional investment. Policy measures including support for the low income household and mandatory cut-off point for stopping analog broadcasting. Subscriber's willingness to accept digital broadcasting in terms of price sensitivity and preference for convenient operation also played a role. Introduction of IPTV in pay TV market influenced the speed of digital switch over of cable TV operators. MSOs with economies of scale showed higher digital switch over rate than independent SO.

  • This paper is an exploratory study on the acceptance of Chinese Internet entertainment personal broadcasting contents. After analyzing the factors affecting viewer satisfaction, we analyzed the relationship between these factors and viewer satisfaction on reuse intention. As a result of the survey, first, the information system quality has a significant effect on the viewer satisfaction of internet personal broadcasting. Second, indirect experience, entertainment pursuit, and social relationship have a significant effect on viewing satisfaction of internet personal broadcasting. Third, viewing satisfaction of internet personal broadcasting has a significant effect on reuse intention. These results are expected to help establish the marketing strategy of the company operating the Internet personal broadcasting and prepare the requirements to be provided by the host.

A Study on the Recognition of Diversity on Digital Media Services (디지털미디어서비스에 관한 시청자의 다양성 인식 실증)

  • This paper deals with the viewer's recognition of diversity on digital media services. For this reason, the researcher focused on the IPTV user, how the perception of the diversity of the digital media service affected the user's satisfaction. The results are as follows. First, digital media service user recognized that supply side diversity of media channel and VOD affect recognition of accessibility (easy of use) and perceived playfulness. Second user recognized that variety of performers and actors affect recognition of accessibility and perceived playfulness. Moreover, it was found that recognition of accessibility, actor's diversity, perceived playfulness affect use's recognition for media player's contribution of diversity, and media satisfaction. As in this paper, the researcher expects that this kind of methodology for confirming of user's recognition of diversity will contribute to preparing a future media policy.
