  • RAID systems have been used as a mass storage system with high parallelism and availability. Especially RAID systems with parity declustering are widely studied as a technique to provide high fault tolerancy and availability by reducing performance degradation in case of disk fuilures. In this paper, a new organization of parity declustering with distributed spare units is proposed. And in normal mode where there are no failures, it is shown that these organization can improve the performance of RAID systems. By simulation methods, it is proved that the performance of RAID system in normal mode is improved by 5 to 15%.

  • In this paper, a RAID system is modeled and simulated by using the DEVS formalism. The RAID system interacts with a host system by using the high-speed Fibre channel protocol and stores data in an array of IDE disks. The DAVS formalism specifies discrete event systems in a hierarchical, modular manner. The RAID system model is composed of three units: primary-PCI unit, secondary-PCI unit and MCU unit. The primary-PCI unit interfaces with the host system and I/O data caches. The secondary-PCI unit includes disks. The MCU unit controls overall system. The control algorithm of MCU and PCI transactions are analyzed and modeled, From the analysis of simulation events, we can conclude that the proposed model satisfies given requirements.

  • In this paper, we propose the acceleration method of the DDR-SSD RAID level 5. The DDR-SSD is the storage device of the Next Generation Storage(NGS) system. The DDR-SSD has different characteristics with HDD and Flash SSD. That's why the DDR-SSD RAID level 5 does not provide the best performance when the normal acceleration method is used. In this paper, to accelerate the DDR-SSD RAID level 5 operation, we propose the parity cache and the architecture of the parity cell. The parity cache stores only parity blocks. This acceleration method proposed in this paper reduce the number of the disk access and the overhead of parity operations.

  • This paper presents a new striped checkpointing scheme for serverless cluster computers, where the local disks are attached to the cluster nodes collectively form a distributed RAID with a single I/O space. Striping enables parallel I/O on the distributed disks and staggering avoids network bottleneck in the distributed RAID. We demonstrate how to reduce the checkpointing overhead and increase the availability by striping and staggering dynamically for communication intensive applications. Linpack HPC Benchamark and MPI programs are applied to these checkpointing schemes for performance evaluation on the 16-nodes cluster system. Benchmark results prove the benefits of the striped checkpointing scheme compare to the existing schemes, and these results are useful to design the efficient checkpointing scheme for fast rollback recovery from any single node failure in a cluster system.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to remotely intuitively identify faults found in storage devices in soft-RAID used in a server system composed of Linux. To do this, we analyze the principle and problem of fault reporting method in the soft-RAID system of Linux OS and suggest the state of storage devices in remote Internet Home-page. The proposed method consists of a method of displaying images on the Internet home-page, so that it can be arranged freely when creating a home-page, and the image data is composed of external files, so it is bery convenient to edit and replace images In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we have confirmed that the state of each storage device can be confirmed at a long distance without any major addition to the Home-page configuration.

  • RAID were proposed to stored double data or used to parity logging methode for error recovery. We describe a technique for automating the execution of redundant disk array operation, including recovery from errors, independent of array architecture. RAID5 provide highly reliable cost effective secondary storage with high performance for read access and large write accessed. It discusses the two architectural techniques used in disk arrays, striping across multiple disks to improve performance and redundancy to improve reliability. In this paper we compare with performance and reliability in RAID5 real/write to file and stripe size. than suggest to algorithm.

  • The software RAID file system is defined as the system which distributes data redundantly across an aray of disks attached to each workstations connected on a high-speed network. This provides high throughput as well as higher availability. In this paper, we present an efficient caching scheme for the software RAID filte system. The performance of this schmem is compared to two other schemes previously proposed for convnetional file systems and adapted for the software RAID file system. As in hardware RAID systems, small-writes to be the performance bottleneck in softwre RAID filte systems. To tackle this problem, we logically divide the cache into two levels. By keeping old data and parity val7ues in the second-level cache we were able to eliminate much of the extra disk reads and writes necessary for write-back of dirty blocks. Using track driven simulations we show that the proposed scheme improves performance for both the average response time and the average system busy time.

  • For real time services of multimedia applications, storage systems should provide data without degrading their performance. Since it is very important to recover data immediately at a disk failure, the disk recovery system is required. This paper presents a hybrid recovery scheme which prevents degraded the performance on a single disk failure at RAID level 5 architecture until the failed disk is replaced with a new disk. The proposed scheme is very economical compared to previous spare disk schemes because it does not use extra disks. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated and analyzed with that of the RAID level 5 for various requested sizes through the simulation. The results show that the performance of the proposed scheme is improved up to 20 percents at the failure mode and 80 percents at the reconfigured mode. After a multimedia server system has been built with a RAID controller and hard disks, the data recovery performance of the propose scheme are compared with the results of simulation.

  • Energy conservation of server systems has become important. Though storage subsystem is one of the biggest power consumers, development of energy conservation techniques is challenging problem due to striping techniques like RAID and physical characteristics of hard disks. According to our observation, the size of footprint for a day or for hours is much smaller compared to the size of whole data set. In this paper, we describe a design of a novel architecture for RAID that uses an SSD as a large cache to conserve energy by holding such a footprint. We incorporate these approaches into a real implementation of a RAID 5 system that consists of four hard disks and an SSD in a Linux environment. Our preliminary results in actual performance measurements using the cello99 and SPC traces show that energy consumption is reduced by a maximum of 14%.
